I’m a skipper for years. Later generations of iPhone’s are so powerful to last at lest 4-5 years.

Still holding on to iPhone 7. Good phone except the battery which’s on 94% capacity. I will replace the battery when it exceeds its given capacity.

Otherwise no desire to upgrade. New iPhone’s are a hell lot of money which in my opinion is not worth it.

Agree with all of those above, especially the “pay in full” part. Tie myself into multiple payment plans is not fun. Maybe US customers kinda have to go for payment, but not in Australia.

All US customers do not have to go for monthly payments. Many people can afford to pay in full for a device but many prefer not to fork it up in front. I myself can afford to pay in full, but I choose not to, since I upgrade yearly and don’t want to waste so much money. I don’t trade or sell my devices (keep them as backups) so I’ll be out of a lot of money if I paid up front. This will be the first year I don’t upgrade, so next year I will be paying up front for my iPhone.

I am not saying categorically that dividing payments is dumb, but it is dumb in many cases where the grand total amounts to a lot more than the actual price. Some stores allow you to pay over 12 months without interest or cost and that can be a good way to go about it if you have enough economic control in your life.

If you can't shell out 1K$ for that iPhone then you probably shouldn't buy it. There is little it can do for you that a phone costing 300$ can't do just as well.

Every iPhone that I’ve made monthly payments on never amounted to more than the retail price. AppleCare+ don’t count, since it’s already factored into my carrier’s extended warranty. I haven’t purchased AppleCare+ in 2 years now.

I tell myself every year that I’m not upgrading. Then the keynote happens and then weigh the pros and cons of new old. Then at 3 am I’m on the apple store app waiting for pre orders. So yes I won’t be upgrading this year.

Could you please give me a wakeup call because I slept through my alarm last year. :(

Apple plays the FOMO card very well... but I am sitting this one out... extremely happy with my Xs Max.

Are you talking about some kind of subsidy or something? The iPhone 6 iirc was $650 usd at launch. You can't compare contract type prices to full purchase prices... from that perspective an XR will cost me $0 to buy.

I paid $300 for my iPhone 6 64GB on launch day. It's been in a case since day one and the only support I've needed was replacing the battery last year for $30. The phone is pristine but iOS13 will not support it. I have a hard time justifying $1000 for the new generation iPhoneX and will wait and see what the new phones offers. The latest "thing" seems to be 5G support and I'm curious if the '19 lineup will be considered obsolete upon release.

$300 is about right for mid-tier storage 2-year contract pricing.

$650 iPhone 6 16GB: $200 on contract
$750 iPhone 6 64GB: $300
$850 iPhone 6 128GB: $400

What about fixed term 2 year contracts with a data plan included? I pay £30p/m over two years and I find that easily affordable. I could afford any iPhone that is offered in full if I really wanted it, but choose not to pay a large lump sum out initially as I don’t see the point. I also wouldn’t spend £1k+ on an iPhone as I don’t see the benefits when they over the same experience as models less than that.

Yeah if the iPhone Upgrade Program charged interest then there's no way I would participate in it.
The iPhone upgrade program is effectively a high cost rental scheme with the option to buy at the end. You’re paying double in 12 months that most contracts offer over two years too. It’s all for the privilege of upgrading each year. The AppleCare addition annoys me as my phone is already covered for damage and replacement under my house insurance and it’s a fraction of the cost of AC. That’s just Apple getting a bit more out of the deal without considering the consumers options.

Probably skipping 2019, have a XS Max 512gb SG, love it. I like the 2020 look of the hole punch if true, I want a 1TB iPhone, and the 6.7 Inch iPhone intrigues me, I have bad eyes, and have issues with nausea, so a bigger screen is a must.

If they have a 1TB this year, I could always get the 11Max next Fall when my XS Max is paid off, hate to have to send it back.

I’ve done it before and don’t mind to do it again. I’m sure missing that pre order is the worst feeling come launch day.

Each hour of sleep past the order time is an extra week before it ships. No pressure.

There's no "option" to buy at the end. If you make two year's worth of payments you own the phone. There's no interest and it's the same price as if you would have bought the phone outright with one payment at the store (if you also purchased AppleCare).

While I agree that Apples iPhone Upgrade Program is not a bad deal, you're paying the price of the iPhone AND Apple Care+. That's fine if you planned on buying Apple Care anyway, but if you're one of the people who don't want to spend money on Apple Care, than it's more expensive than buying the phone.

Yes, purchasing a phone and purchasing Applecare is more money than purchasing just a phone. For people like me who always bought Applecare for their iPhones nothing changed by signing up for the upgrade program.

That’s what Apple wants. I’ve actually learned not to pre-order like that anymore, then I want to make a rational decision if I really need to upgrade or not, that means by taking my time, I don’t make a decision that I would regret later that I can’t return after the 14 day. If that means I don’t pre-order and I don’t get the latest iPhone until XYZ amount of weeks, I’m perfectly fine with that.

I might even hold out until 2021 if the rumors keep swirling around.

I'll be honest, I'm just a nut for the camera. That being said, the price might just be too steep.

If you are going to keep a phone 2 years then there no point using the upgrade program as it’s pretty much double the cost of a contract per month. You pretty much pay over 3/4 of the phones value off in one year before you add a sim deal to the equation. The scheme is better for people not worried about the cost and who wish to upgrade yearly which means it’s more like a rental scheme.

What is an example of one of these contracts you're talking about? I'm US based so it might not be a factor. The program gives you flexibility. If you want to upgrade in a year then great you can. If you want to keep paying and own the phone in another year great you can. Before the iPhone upgrade program when I was on a carrier two year contract I had to pay early upgrade fees to upgrade after a year.

I’m still using the 6 plus as my daily phone. Lighter. Have an 8 plus too but it is too heavy to carry so I use that primarily as a music listening device at home and as a kind of iPad replacement

If Apple don’t release a new slightly smaller phone then I won’t be upgrading.

I’ve been using an XR for the past year, and it’s great, exactly what I want but just too large.

Am now using a refurb SE as a daily phone and it’s almost perfect; a better spec, a slightly larger screen and updated Touch ID and camera would have me throwing my cash at Apple.

Hopefully they’ll make an option for those of us who don’t want a massive device, and yes the XS is still too large.
