If Apple don’t release a new slightly smaller phone then I won’t be upgrading.

I’ve been using an XR for the past year, and it’s great, exactly what I want but just too large.

Am now using a refurb SE as a daily phone and it’s almost perfect; a better spec, a slightly larger screen and updated Touch ID and camera would have me throwing my cash at Apple.

Hopefully they’ll make an option for those of us who don’t want a massive device, and yes the XS is still too large.

Hi I don't think they will release a smaller form factor anytime soon as the market for such phone is very small.

Not in 2019 they won’t be. I suspect 2020 they will offer something different in a smaller size, but there’s nothing been rumored at all for 2019 for a smaller iPhone, at least not this far in advance when the keynote is weeks away.

I have the iPhone XS Max and will buy the iPhone 2019 for sure. I buy the newest iPhone every year. Can’t see a reason why not. I’m an Apple fan. :)

Edit: My internet connection was hanging. Sorry for the double post.

iPhone X owner here, probably upgrading this year.
Main reason: camera. The iphone has become my main camera for everyday life and travel. I bought a good compact but I forget to take it and I make better pics with the iphone X.
I already read the XS makes better pics than the X (which I'm already happy about), this plus the new wideangle camera makes it a definitive: Buy.
The only thing I'm not decided yet is wether I switch for the max or not. I had the 7+ before and was happy with it, but then when switching to the X I found the size perfect. I still like the size but I think maybe the Max would be better for pics (taking and watching them).

There has been a few reports of the regular flagship model being smaller, I did say slightly not massively though, what is now the XR will be the middle option with an lcd display and the new Max being the same as the smaller offering but with a larger screen.

There’s really not a market for 3 large phones, hence the XR took sales away from the more premium models this year.

I will be skipping the 2019 releases since my iPhone X still works fine. In fact the only reason I upgraded from the 6 Plus to the X in the first place was because I was cheap and got the 16GB variant and was constantly running out of space.

Times have changed. This is not Apple 5 years ago avidly turning out new iPhones that were a must have. It appears that Apple is leaning towards services which is a good thing but not at the expense of not bringing new iPhones to market with many new features bells whistles and frills at least every other year
Today we have several brands to compare Apples iPhone to and see if it’s worth getting
It’s a shame that with all the patents Apple has that only a few work their way to the iPhone

Services have been on the rise for quite some time, and that’s where Apple really needs its growth. But I don’t think smart phones or even the iPhone in general needs to have ‘new features’ every single year just to attract consumers, you’ll have consumers who are loyal to the iPhone no matter what, because of [iOS]. What’s going to attract consumers, is price points that they can manage/afford, it doesn’t matter what Apple includes for features, if the consumer can’t afford it, it doesn’t change their perspective.

I read that Apple is dropping the lightning port.

No thanks. This port dance is getting old. I've got all my cables, etc. Not going to buy all new stuff for a stupid new connector that I don't need.
Actually if they’ll keep lightning that would keep me from upgrading.

I’ll be continuing to use my iPhone 7 until it either dies or no longer performs the functions necessary. If it doesn’t die, then it’ll probably take another move of Apple prohibiting apps from continuing to support it (like the 32-bit cutoff they did about 6 months before I retired my iPhone 5).

If everything continues to work, then I’ll continue using my iPhone 7. There really isn’t a feature they could add to any new model phone that would change that. Well... if they made it so the phone could transport me instantly to any destination instead of having to drive, then I might consider it.

I agree, but that is a trend in Europe also. People only look at the monthly cost, not the total - or how much more the total amounts to.

The same when buying stuff like cars. People buy Tesla-cars because they only cost «so and so» per month - for 10 - TEN - years.
That's a load of bull. People buy Tesla cars for many reasons-long terms savings on maintenance, the environmental impact, a high quality ride, savings on gas, continual software updates, regenerative braking, just to name a few. Some people don't look at the total cost when buying things, but Tesla is NOT a good example.

I kind of have the crave to upgrade after 2 years with the X, but..........

So far things don’t look very impressive.

Plus no Qualcomm??? I guess I will reserve judgement until the announcement. It’s possible the camera improvement and battery life could sway me.

I don’t need a faster phone, I don’t game on my iPhone so no big deal to me. I care about signal quality, battery life, camera, screen, speed of Face ID, and lower radiation exposure would be nice.

The notch hasn’t bothered me until recently but I can’t stand it anymore - huge waste of screen space. I don’t want to go back to fingerprints though.

Hopefully there are some surprises from Apple.

Nope, I won't skip 2019. I sell my phone every year and upgrade so I will be doing it again this year.

I generally do the same every 2 years and it offsets the cost significantly so I can see why people do it. Holding on saves you the 400-500 to upgrade but if you go beyond 3 years you then have a higher cost to get a new phone so there is a trade off.

Personally I agree it makes sense to upgrade when it is cheaper vs waiting and spending more.

I usually upgrade every year but am planning on skipping this year. I’ve invested too much into cases for my current 256GB XS Max. I have the Apple folio case and 3 Apple leather cases. Also have the Belkin screen protector fitted by Apple and AppleCare so am planning on keeping this until 2020.

Looks like the 2019 phones might have some interesting draws to them.
Regardless I’ll be holding off ‘till late 2020 to see what those phones will bring. 5G doesn’t hold any attraction for me and even if they make the 2020 Max 6.7" (as rumored) I think that tiny increase will not yield real, useable screen real estate.

My biggest hesitation with the 2019 phone is I use the SANDMARC case for the screw on additional lenses. Until they can figure out a case for the triple lens design I need to stick with my current XS Max. Granted you can use the lenses using clips, but frankly the clip is a lousy alternative.

I have no intention of upgrading this year. I love my XR. It’s one of my favorite iPhones I’ve had, having first bought the Max, but not being able to tolerate the OLED.

It’ll be my first time to not upgrade since the 3G, so we’ll see if I can resist. ;-p
