I do find it funny how people bang on about 5g. I really couldn’t give a rats arse about about it, 4g is plenty for my needs.
When I first got my iPhone 5 in 2012, I was getting 20Mbps down and 15Mbps up. Nowadays, my LTE is regularly 5Mbps down and 1-2Mbps up and there's a lot of latency at times. I'm on a fixed GB plan so no speed caps but the LTE connection couldn't reliably stream 720p and 1080p content. When there's a lot of congestion, LTE can even be 1Mbps down and sub-1Mbps up.

I'd like to see 5G support to help alleviate network congestion.

Years ago some users said they couldn’t give a rats arse about 4G either, claiming that 3G was plenty. Those posts exist.
They aren’t saying that now. Developers will begin to incorporate the newer technology into their apps.

Alleviating network congestion will be a benefit to everyone, including the people continuing to use LTE. Some regions will benefit more than others.

People somehow managed with 256 kbytes of RAM also...

That was also before a time when everyone installed an application it entered in the registry and started automatically when windows booted up and the bottom right corner of your task bar looks like a iPhone home screen on the average users computer.

I’m hanging on to my 8 plus until they offer Touch ID again and remove the notch. Hopefully this will be next year’s models

Join the Club - exactly.

I’m not buying any new iPhone until I get TouchID back. I’d also prefer a virtual Home Button instead of the ship gestures, which are idiotic (and identical to Android’s)

And just a comment about 5G........it’s years off till we see full carrier participation and completion of the infrastructure Necessary so 2020 iPhone may not have it
Exactly - 5G in iPhone won’t matter for at least another 2-3 years, so iPhones ‘lacking” 5G is pretty much of a non-issue to me (or anyone else).

I can already see the headlines this year pointing out Apple having no 5g. 2 years I really cannot believe. Most major capitals have it already or will by the end of this year. Most large cities will next year.
It still won’t make much of a difference to you as an iPhone user.

The promise of 5G is for carriers being able to deploy gigabit home routers, thus being able to compete directly with cable companies, without having to dig up the ground to install fiber. It will also finally (somewhat) allow carriers to provide internet access to many rural locations the same way... and then there’s IoT, since 5G will be entirely IPv6 (can’t believe mobile connections still use IPv4 these days).

Is 5G faster? Sure. Will it make a difference to you? Unless you spend your days running Speedtests and posting the screenshots, No, it won’t.

apple bought Intel for a Billion because "Apple could afford to have marginal 5G for 1-2years but not 5years".

be warned; buy avoid the 1st or 2nd generation of 5G anything
I am wondering if my current iPhone will bridge the 5G product introduction mayhem?

Yep, it won’t matter for at least 2 years, and by then Apple’s PA Semiconductor team will have worked their usual magic with all the resources Apple acquired from the Intel purchase, and deliver a 5G chip that is way ahead of anything Qualcomm can offer.

by the way:
if 5G is available at your home you will want it... a lot.
Yes, at your Home, since you can get a stationary router to provide gigabit internet.

Exactly! 5G beyond a few cities isn’t really going to be an offering by the end of 2020. And more rural customers won’t see it well beyond even 3 years from now.

I generally do the same every 2 years and it offsets the cost significantly so I can see why people do it. Holding on saves you the 400-500 to upgrade but if you go beyond 3 years you then have a higher cost to get a new phone so there is a trade-off.

Personally, I agree it makes sense to upgrade when it is cheaper vs waiting and spending more.

Yes, that is true that is the main reason I upgrade every year because I can do it while loosing not a whole lot.

I'm surprised it slowed down for you. I've had the opposite experience. A few years ago I'd get like 30 down and longer ping times, I now get 100-150 down and much faster pings.

Regardless, 5G is pretty awesome, and I can't wait to see what changes it brings.

That’s fine that you don’t care about 5G, but maybe you don’t understand all the tangible benefits it actually offers versus you dismissing it altogether. I mean, it will make a huge impact pending the carrier as well.

i had intended to use my X until i couldn't but recently dropped it and shattered the glass. Now I'm looking at $230 to repair the screen or just save that money and upgrade. Doesn't appear to be anything awesome coming with this new model tho.

Can't believe how fast LTE has gotten! Did a speed test today while on a Facetime call.

I'd base my decision on whether or not I could give up 3D touch or not

I always skipped the "S" versions.. Always bought the new designs.

Now 2017, 2018 and 2019 will all be the same form and design so i probably skip this one too.. iPhone X is still good.
First time im disappointed before an event

Nope. I look forward to upgrading every year. I’ll look into other phones when Apple stops dominating in the GPU arena, which doesn’t look like that’s gonna be anytime soon.

So, your sole criteria is “it’s new” ?

I’m pretty sure I just said my criteria is the GPU. I do a lot of mobile gaming and my main suite is Adobe’s software. Android phones can’t compete with Apple there ... at least not yet anyway.

i want the button touch to unlock i don’t like face Id and also like small phones like iphone 7 i won’t move i don’t have no choices

I am still happy with my 8+. Unless something knocks my socks off, I will stick with it. Maybe even get another one once the inevitable price drops happen after the announcements of the new iPhones. Right now, don't see anything compelling to make me buy the new iPhones.

But who knows? Maybe Apple is keeping something secret and will totally surprises us with the new iPhones. I always look forward to this time. This forum begins getting more and more active once again.

And I always do like when excited folks get their iPhones and give their immediate impressions of them. So I guess for me it is just a wait and see what happens on September 10th.
