Apple are offering £190 for 64GB and Cellular, so converted to USD a little more than the $230 offered for the base model, but not much. If I had the base model I’d probably take it for the RAM and storage upgrade, but whatever iPad I get next I’ll be keeping one with a sim tray until it is no longer usable.

Thats a good deal. Right now I just checked and the trade in value at bestbuy and it makes no sense in my case. They are offering me 185 dollars for a mini 6, cellular with 256gb with no marks on the screen, while if I had the base mini with wifi, they would give me 260 dollars as a trade in.

Apple says my 256 cellular Mini 6 is worth $230 trade-in.

The camera hasn’t moved on the Mini, has it? So they didn’t need to make it incompatible with the Pencil 2, unless of course something has changed there to fix the jelly scrolling.
As best I can reckon, it’s a move to align feature sets with the Air. I would heavily bet that Apple could have kept the Pencil 2 compatible while adding the Pencil Pro, but since the Air and Pro lines don’t have that, they didn’t want the lower-tier Mini to supersede in any way.

Of course, this also means they get to sell more accessories in the process.

Upgrading because
  1. Have had my Mini 6 since launch and the battery is quite bad at this point
  2. A battery replacement is $119 from Apple
  3. Trade in value is $230
  4. If I didn't get the 7 I would definitely replace the battery, so the incremental cost of the upgrade is $499-230-119 =$150.
  5. Yes, I could possibly lower that cost by selling myself but trade-in is low effort.

I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort of selling it.

Upgrading from a Mini 6 for a few reasons.

1) 64GB turned out to be too small, I have to worry about clearing space when doing updates etc.
2) Apple Intelligence once its released
3) Faster processor and more memory
4) Getting $230 for my Mini 6 so net cost is $269 to upgrade.

It's partly iOS/iPadOS but I get far, far, far fewer reloads on my M1/16GB iPad Pro. At least I've been able to leave my forms open, look up data and then go back to the form without the tab reloading.
It's a shame anyway. These sort of issues are not a thing on computers and newer were, at least for me and I've been using computers since 90s. And that's even with less RAM and computing power overall in today's machines. So Apple can't get memory management right or they have other reason why it's so bad on iOS/iPadOS. Some people might say because of the battery life but that's nonsense because it's not an issue on laptops.

I decided to get an iPad Air (M2) 11” instead. I’ll continue to use take my mini when I travel by aircraft.

Nothing against the Mini 7, but I have no idea why someone with a working Mini 6 would want to upgrade to it. It's just a spec update to keep it current. No need to replace a Mini 6 unless you're really pushing it to its limit.

Just preordered the 7 starlight with the Smart Folio in the color 'sage'. The color kind of grew on me, though I haven't seen it in person, yet. Lol! I hope I don't regret it. I'm waiting on the pencil pro for a bit. I want to make sure I don't regret getting the mini before going all out. Keeping my Pro on the side with gen. 2 pencil, so it's not like it's an urgent need.

I’m not buying any Apple devices that don’t have 120 Hz displays or mini LED / OLED. Easy guide to follow for purchase decisions

It's the same reasoning of people who upgrade to the next iPhone each year. Either they have that upgrade plan with the carrier, or they just want to trade-in at top dollar (prior model) to get the newest with minimal out of pocket costs with trade-in/upgrade (sort of lol)

Agree but to be fair, it has been 3 years since the mini 6 came out. I myself don't understand iPhone users who upgrade every year and every 2 years is kinda of understandable. I myself am on a 3 year cycle. If I bought a base mini 6 at launch in 2021, I think I'd make the upgrade 3 years later for double the RAM, double the storage, and a CPU that can run the latest games like Resident Evil 4 (needs 17 Pro or later).

Not sure about anyone else but for me, it's definitely not a "need". It's 100% a "want". I will be the first to admit that I weigh the pros and cons, examine the cost-to-value ratios of trading in now versus later, mentally list the justifications and rationalizations...all to make it line up with what I want to do anyway. :) These kinds of purchases bring me joy, and I spend a lot less money buying a new iPad mini every 3 years than if I went to Starbucks five days a week over the same amount of time! Both are just different ways of using money to buy a little happiness. We all need a little more of that!

The latter is pretty much me, lol.

Funny thing is, I got an iPad Air in June because I wanted a second iPad with a bigger screen. I opted for a discounted 2022 model because "eh, it's really just a chip upgrade" and here I am now "I need a new Mini for the new chip!" (although the extra RAM is a factor too). Maybe I'm just bipolar.

They did the same for the 11 inch M2 iPad Pro. Physically, the 11 inch M2 iPad Pro is no different than the 11 inch M1 iPad Pro. But, the M2 iPad Pro works with the Apple Pencil Pro & Apple Pencil USB-C….while the M1 11 inch iPad Pro works with the Apple Pencil 2 & Apple Pencil USB-C. You need a PHD to keep up with the Apple Pencil compatibility.

Not upgrading. My phone is pretty much the same screen size.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
this is 7 inch screen of imaginary tablet that i created - notice how much screen it has
-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------

this is also 7 inch diagonal screen - more like an iphone pro max. Ipad mini would be even bigger.
