No numbers so soon, but I had to call Verizon this morning for a misc question and was greeted with msg saying wait times may be long because of call volume with the new plans.

Sure enough, over a 15 min wait before someone came on.
 
Im curious if At&t will actually respond otherwise. I fear that they might view their unlimited plan is enough.

I'm waiting to see if Att does something. Only thing holding me back is I have to get a new 7plus but I can sell my Att model. It will be so much easier to have tethering. I have a t mobile SE I carry for tethering right now and I called att to let them know if they don't do something very soon then I'm leaving. They tried to convince me to stay bc we have 5 lines all together...and 6th soon but I am happy to switch to Verizon.

If att would just add tethering I would be thrilled. They kept trying to tell me that Verizon isn't unlimited bc it doesn't have unlimited tethering and I kept explaining it is only 10gb high speed but that is way more than zero.
 
I ditched ATT months ago for T-Mobile Unlimited everything. Best move I've made. Being able to use my phone to text and surf while traveling in Europe and Central America for free has been awesome.

People! Please keep calling ATT! Get them to give us tethering of some quantity included. It would be a lot easier to not have to switch! But I will switch it they hold out!

Read some of the fine print and at 22GB of data usage all phones begin to be throttled.
I have 10 phones and a pay for "40GB get 80GB" plan plus rollover.
We regularly use 60-80GB/month.
I've yet to find any other carrier or plan that gives me any incentive to make a switch or enough confidence that I won't be doing the exact same thing again within a year.
 
People! Please keep calling ATT! Get them to give us tethering of some quantity included. It would be a lot easier to not have to switch! But I will switch it they hold out!

Called twice today...bottom line, they don't care whether you stay or not. I've got till 4th of March for att to come up with something to entice me to stay or I'm off to Verizon. Been with att for a long time and I'd rather not switch for the convenience sake, but...

Verizon does not throttle. You read the fine print wrong. Users who reach 22GB in a month and attempt to access a congested tower may be de-prioritized while using said tower. Conversely, if a user reaches 22GB+ and is accessing towers that are not congested, said user will enjoy the use of the Verizon service as he or she normally would.

If you are reading articles from BGR and the like, it doesn't appear that they understand what they read from Verizon, as they have posted incorrect information.

Verizon's plan is unlimited. There is a big difference between throttling and possible de-priorizitation. Anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant of the difference or are being intellectually dishonest.

I am asking because I do have users hitting over 20GB/month, in what will probably be a congestion area/tower, very highly likely they never roam off of that tower often.

It also states that after just 10GB the speeds are reduced to 3G speeds when using mobile hotspot or tethering. Something else I do a majority of the month with my data.


I am in no way saying this plan or Verizon is a bad deal or anyone that considers it is making a mistake. I am just stating that it definitely doesn't look like it would be right for me or anyone else on my plan.

I made the switch today and I can say I've never had a worse customer service experience.

After the two recent price hikes my AT&T bill was closing in on $100/mo. After my military discount my plan with Verizon will be $71 before taxes, so less than $80/mo.

I bought my 7+ at Target. It is a factory unlocked model. Did the port from AT&T to Verizon while at the store, put the new sim in and was greeted with an "Invalid sim" message. Verizon rep said "your phone must be locked." Called AT&T and was told my phone was on contact until January of next year. I explained that that was incorrect and I had a 5s that I had purchased on contact just before they stopped offering them and the 7+ is MY phone that I purchased outright.

AT&T rep said there's nothing they can do for me since my number had already been ported so I had to port BACK to AT&T to have my factory unlocked device released from their network. The port back was a fairly quick process but the rep that said he was in the process of pushing through my unlock transferred me to some random department out of nowhere so I had to re-explain the whole situation to the new rep who had to transfer need again.

The next rep I got was extremely rude and continuously told me any phone I purchase through AT&T is going to be locked to their network. I told her for times that I had purchased at Target, not AT&T. I'll admit I started to get a little frustrated and may have raised my voice a bit and she hung up on me. Time to start all over again.

The next gentleman I was able to connect to was extremely nice and apologized for the inconvenience. Said he would get everything set and connect with technical support and explain the whole situation for me before bringing me onto the call. Waited on hold.... and waited. And waited. Call disconnected.

The NEXT rep was another of the lovely gems we all abhor and told me anybody that told me an unlock request could be expedited didn't know what they were talking about and I needed to call retentions. I asked her to transfer me and she said she couldn't do transfers because of the tropical storm (yes, seriously). I asked for the number for retentions and she gave me the general AT&T customer service line.

By this time, three and a half hours later, I had to head to work. Sitting in the parking lot at work I decided to give it one more shot. Got a great rep, explained everything all over again, and to my relief was told that it would be taken care of. Sat on hold for less than 10 minutes and was told the unlock had been put through and my early termination fee waived. Hallelujah.

Called the rep at Verizon that I had been working with and left a voicemail saying we were good to go. She texted me back saying she would initiate the port in five minutes. 20 minutes later I get another text saying "there's nothing else that can be done with this number today. You'll have to call us tomorrow." I called Verizon on my break and waited for 25 minutes on hold (my entire break) before having to hang up and go back to work.

Half hour later I get a call from the rep that had pushed through the unlock saying the port had gone through and I need to reboot my phone. After a reset I have a Verizon signal with LTE data. Awesome! Text my fiancé to tell her all is well and I get "who's this?" back. Turns out they activated a temporary number on my sim to hold my account while I ported back to AT&T to fix the locked phone issue. Took another 40 minutes for them to remove that number and put my number in over top.

I sure hope Verizon's coverage is as good as everyone claims. I'd hate to drop them and go back to AT&T after this nightmare.

I've had those type of run ins with AT&T too many times to count in 15 years. So done with them. They don't care any more for the customers. I'm surprised you didn't just trade in your phone and get a free iPhone 7 or did you not have one on that list? I bought a used one for 200 so we get a new iPhone 7 when we switch.

They wouldn't restrict it to 22gb for an entire family, that would be almost criminal lol.

Each person gets unlimited, and if they pass 22gb then it's slowed down to 3G speeds in congested areas. But elsewhere, they'll still receive LTE speeds even after 22gb

I'm surprised you didn't just trade in your phone and get a free iPhone 7 or did you not have one on that list? I bought a used one for 200 so we get a new iPhone 7 when we switch.
I brought that up and I would have had to pay $5 extra per month unless I wanted to drop down to 32GB.

It might not necessarily even be 3G speeds in places and times of congestion, just potential deprioritization which could be slower than full LTE speeds but might still be faster than 3G, although might not, mostly depends on the congestion at that time at that location.

Oh trust me, people have been calling... but like what Phillyphil said, AT&T doesn't care. I'm giving them until next week. I'd rather support T-mobile who listened to their customers right away and matched Verizon's offer, than be stuck with AT&T's grandfathered unlimited with no tethering, continuous price hikes, and doesn't care about their customers.

Through Verizon you can get the 32GB 7 for free, but I'd want the 128GB, so that will be about $5 extra per month which is fine. I have a 6 to trade in. If I go with Best Buy they are offering a pretty good monthly credit on the phone and I don't have to trade in my phone so I can sell it. I'm sure either way it's only a small difference. Does anyone know which is actually the better deal?

All of the major carriers have been de-prioritizing data on unlimited plans for at least the past year, with Verizon going back to 2014.

I haven't seen any of the carriers associate a speed with that. It's not a flat rate (like a true throttle). I could see them saying "on average, it's 25% slower than the average speed of the tower you're connected to at the moment", but since that average speed is going to be all over the board (based on tower backhaul speed, how many folks are connected to it at that moment, what they're doing, etc), I don't see how they can say a specific speed range.

On the other hand... I haven't seen any major threads here on MacRumors (the Internet's destination for complaining™) from folks complaining about being de-prioritized, nor have I seen any of the major tech blogs delve into this subject, which makes me think most folks heads aren't exploding when it happens to them.

Based on your usage, Verizon's new plans doesn't sound like a good fit for you, but my feel is that most folks wouldn't run into many usability problems if they hit 22GB and get de-prioritized during congested times.
