From the description, it sounds like it would look like the current shiny mirrored Apple when it’s off as it uses its own light source. So, likely a setting to just leave it off all the time.
I know it’s pretty iconic, but I never missed the lighted logo being replaced in 2015/2016. Seems like Ive’s design extremes are being rolled back slowly but surely.

I’ve been trying to find pictures of the mini-LED’s and it looks like they’re designed to only shine in one direction. Where other backlights light from the edge, mini-LED’s appear to be mounted on an opaque surface behind the display such that the light only shines in one direction.

So, for mini-LED devices, it looks like they’d have to have a separate device to shine backwards. The regular LED screens could still work the same from the light bleed back.
Interesting—do you know if OLED panels would emit to the rear?

According to https://oled.com/oleds/white-oleds-woleds/ :

"OLEDs can also be made in almost any shape, can be deposited on flexible substrates, and can be transparent, emitting light from both sides of the device."

However here they're talking about OLEDs for general lighting, not as display panels.

I understand that they were removed due to possible light leakage or something affecting the monitor and maybe also to cut down on parts….

…but in terms of media presence they will pop more.

Apple take the glowing Apple away, people complain but still buy the MacBooks, years later Apple gives the Logo back and some people will consider it an upgrade and buy again, it's really quite brilliant marketing.

A glowing Logo will increase Apples bottom line.

It was a poor marketing decision to drop it in the first place.

Apparently you’ve never heard of the pull-back strategy.

Companies use this a lot to;
1. Stir the public
2. Create Nostalgia
3. Supply something they already had before

Humans naturally want what they can’t have, I thought I wouldn’t ever get to see the 17” come back.. they eventually brought it back in the 16”.

Always pull back a bit when the response is good when dealing with humans, if you want them to want narurally want it, whatever it be. Even woman.. 🙄

The world needs this. It's iconic and makes a statement.

Just imagine Backlit Apple Logo on a Midnight MacBook. Sheeesh! 🔥
Better yet imagine just a silhouette of the Apple logo that either glows white or classic Apple rainbow colour, animated with a mirrored center. It would be better than the original and the mirrored present one we have today. Imagine playing a song or movie and the light reacts to it almost like a heart beat when the Apple logo is put to sleep and it breaths.

But the OLED MacBook Pros wont have backlights. They’ll have emissive pixels. Also don’t the new ones with the Mini LED have many backlight zones that turn on and off? Not sure how that would work either. They would need a separate backlight element, right? Which means you could probably turn it on or off as an option.

... Seems like Ive’s design extremes are being rolled back slowly but surely.

Meets exactly my first impressions about this topic: they abandon the last sins caused by the master of 'thinner than thin' – right decision.

On the other hand some technical reasons are obvious: you are sitting in face of the burning sun an open your MB Air – the you get funny optical effects into your screen – Apple logo sticker helped ;)😂

Change for the sake of change.

I hope somebody there patents an attractive and intuitive iOS/OS interface, like Apple used to have around the time of the backlit screen.

Exactly. Jony Ive is a pompous, no-talent hack who had no ideas to ADVANCE products. His sole mania was to decimate usefulness, under the excuse of "thinness." Insufferable douchebag. Sadly, he wasn't the only clueless turd that Apple mollycoddled for far too long, to the detriment of their products. I won't name the next one who comes to mind, because I don't care to extend any celebrity to asshøles.

I do not necessarly care but how does it work in darker environments? Dont want a flash light in the middle of a darker place + what about battery consumption? I rather have longer working laptop than a flashlight on the back of the display

I'd like to see it make a comeback, but a patent for it? Really? o_O
Yes, why not if it is not just light on and off? It could for example offer the possibility to adapt luminosity according to ambient light conditions, or cycle through colours and patterns; many things are possible today. A well executed comeback could justify a patent.

It can have variable light intensity and a choice of light colours to be more discreet in darker environment; or just switched off by the user. Plain constant light, like the one we knew once, cannot justify a patent. If the rumour comes true of course.

Ever since Steve Jobs died, Apple has gone full reeeetardd with "innovations" such as removing useful ports, removing one of the most iconic features of a mac (backlit logo), adding a notch to their displays, etc... Now 10 years later, the idiots in charge of this company are starting to add the ports and backlit logo back, and market this as "innovation." Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave seeing what has become of his company. And no, their record sales, stock price, etc is still a result of the legacy Jobs built, and has nothing to do with what the new idiot management has been doing with the company the past 10 years.

I agree, the notch was an iconic piece of engineering. Love it, hate it, was still iconic.

Exactly where are “the idiots in charge of the company” add ports and marketing as innovation? I’ll wait while you dig ip the source.
Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave seeing what has become of his company.
No he isn’t. If he was in charge the biggest phone would be a 5s. There would be no Apple Pencil, etc. wearables wouldn’t be a thing.
And no, their record sales, stock price, etc is still a result of the legacy Jobs built,
Well not all of it. Tim Cook defined a new legacy starting with the iPhone 6 and Apple Pay and then went on to Face ID.
and has nothing to do with what the new idiot management has been doing with the company the past 10 years.
The above is sour grapes.
