There has always been this myth that iPhone has terrible battery life, this isn't consistent with my experience with the iPhone X, however this isn't what I want to discuss today.

What I don't understand is even if you just watch the review videos online, I have consistently heard reviewers say the following:

  • This (android) phone has great battery life, I have been able to get 4-5 hours of screen-on time.
  • This iPhone had mediocre battery life, I have only been able to get 7-8 hours of screen-on time.
What's happening here? I have used a number of Android phones and usually I have been getting like 5 hours max. Where as my iPhone X has been able to get 4.5 hours with more than 50% remaining, so I know these numbers are accurate
Sure in theory I could watch videos for 14 hours on airplane mode on a good Android flagship, but the battery life tanks as soon as you start using them normally receiving notifications and stuff.

Are these reviewers so horribly biased they start giving double standards or is there something I don't know going on?

More apple ****ology.

Android gives you screen on time.

Apple gives you total usage time.

The two are not equal

Ok, what's the difference? I checked multiple times, I play with the phone for about an hour, it tells me 45m total usage time.

I'm pretty sure Battery Usage includes some background tasks. Anything taxing the battery gets put there.

The OnePlus 5 and the Pixel 2 XL blow anything from Apple out of the water. Sorry, but SOT is not a valid measure of battery life. 75% of the time you screen is off. Android used to be bad at standby usage, but Doze and continued improvements have vaulted the Android flagships past iPhone.

Not to mention, Apple does some really stupid stuff with the battery indicator. Battery percentage sits in the 90s for a long time and slowly declines from 89% to 60% before falling off a cliff. Really bad experience.

My experience is about the same on both except iPhones tends to have better standby time because it lacks wakelocks while Android is easier to tether and doesn't ask for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to turn on.

Wi-Fi: iOS
Data: Same
Tethering: Android
Video: Same
Music: iOS (not much)
Games: Same
GPS: Same

Between 4-6 hr SOT. Can push to 7+ if just Wi-Fi browsing. Over 10 if just reading an e-book and doing notes.

I don't know about the new phones, but my S7 out of the box had much worse battery life than my 2-year old (at the time) iPhone 6. Some suggested it might be due to the iPhone battery handling a weak signal better. Though I have no problems with calls at my house, the signal is not very strong.

comparing android vs apple usage time is pointless as it's measured completely different.

standby time has always been far better on iphone's in my experience. Maybe thats got better this year though

According to some this isn't accurate

Consistently good battery life on year old 7+. My test android units dies within a day. My iPhone can be idle for at least 3. I'm with you though. I do feel like some people really want to like Android that they fudge the evidence. A phone isn't going to be perfect. It's ok that your phone has **** battery if you like it

Your post is a great example of why Apple battery stats are a load of tosh.

Your snapchat and app store are top of your list and have pushed your "usage" high because they are background users as noted. Nothing to do with you having the phone on and in use really.

Android users are not trying to fudge anything. They get frustrated that IOS users fail to see Apples gerrymandering.

Regarding standby, thats a load of nonsense as well. If i trim my Android to behave like an iphone (mainly by disbling google apps which behave very different between the two os, ) my standby drain drops to effectively zero.

We are supposed to top them off anyway and not have them dip below 20% all the time. Each battery % is also calibrated differently. Most iPhones are slower burners in the beginning. It takes over 30 min Wi-Fi browsing sometimes for the iPhone to go from 100% to 99%. Other phones takes minutes to lose that 1%.

Battery life has been stuck on neutral like resolution has been stuck with QHD. They make the SoC faster but with a more efficient, lower nm dye, but the results are generally the same if similar usage. Wi-Fi is great with iPhone but once you turn on 4G mobile data, it's no different than Android.

The differentiator for me is charging speeds. A difference of 45 min can be a huge difference for me. I like to go back to 80% in less than one hour. I sometimes won't charge it all the way up to 100% and do the laptop rule of 30-40/80.

If I do charge it to 100%, the iPhone's trickle charge is very slow whether you use an iPad charger or fast charger. For me, LG rules in fast charging followed by Samsung. Some of the fast charging slowed down over the years though. S6 and S7 were faster than S8. G5 and V20 are faster than G6 and V30.

^ Click charging time below battery life.

I always wanted an Oppo Find 7a from 2014. It's a little too big for me. You know how some people find the iPhone Plus models more awkward to use after using the X? I feel the same way with the X size after using SE for awhile. I still can't get my thumb to reach all four corners of a 4.7" iPhone. Sweet spot is really SE to XZ1 Compact.

The 18 hours of standby are amazing. Of course you're gonna day that it is also a load of BS. Though it's not. I disconnected at around 6 AM and as you can see it was 19 hours of standby.

Now for arguments sake, let's say the usage was actually around 5. 5*2 is 10. 19*2 is 38. *2 since my phone was at 50%. That is amazing battery life estimate. Never had anything remotely close to that on android.

Now about iOS battery stats. They may not be as accurate as some might like but I did use my phone for quite some time. I listened to 3 hours while commuting to and from school. I used 1 hour listening to music while hanging out with girlfriend in the car. We were searching up songs so it was screen on time mixed with background listening. That already would've brought my Android to about 70 by the way. And that would be if it was consecutive. Don't get me started if it there was standby in between. I was on Snapchat, updated some apps and searched for an app I needed so those usage stats are accurate. I also don't text as much on fridays as it is date night / studying all day. So that would be about 4 hours and some change, right? Well I still have usage up top. I was on safari for about an hour looking solutions and checking FB. I was also on reddit for about an hour. I was responding to emails of my students and whatnot for about 15 min. I was also using the calculator with the screen on for about 15 min. Then you have just turning the screen on for multiple reasons etc. That's 4+1+1+appx(1) is 7 so not quite 8. But I also had Bluetooth on all day pushing stuff to my watch, and WiFi on all day. Could NEVER do that on Android with a 2900 battery.

There are two directions one can take. Either you can acknowledge a competitor for doing something right or you can disregard it and allow your brand to continue and abuse your phone for their agenda (background tasks). Like I said, enjoy your phone. Not all phones are perfect. Most androids have sh*t battery. Enjoy the other things.

Here is my gs8.never used WiFi that saves power and using high performance mode 2k display on auto brightness. I'm at 68% left and the phone has given me 12.5 hours of usage time.

Simple answer. iPhone usage time is just hogwash.

Here are iPhone nonsense equations:

Usage time with screen on + usage time with screen off = total usage time

Battery usage with screen on = 10 X battery usage with screen off.

That was never my experience on any of my 4 iPhones.

You can look at multiple battery drain tests on Youtube as proof. The iPhone status will display at about 85% to 100% range longer than other phones, then the percentage will drop rapidly below the other phones.

This is on iPads too. Anything iOS. Ever wondered why you can have 15 to 20 minutes of usage and it's still on 99% or 100%? Completely bogus, and not a consistent rate of drainage throughout the whole usage.

What do you mean by usage time with screen off? How can you be using it while it's not on?

That's the ridiculous thing with iPhone.

iPhone count usage time when apps are doing background task or sync/push notification when on standby. You listen to music it is counted as usage even though screen is off and battery use is minimal. Even location change accrued usage and any os/system processing when phone is on standby.

As long as iphone CPU is not idle it is considered usage time.

Again, this might be the experience some have had (on youtube videos or otherwise), but I am pointing out that in my experience with my numerous iPhones (and my iPad), this has not been the case.

And to be clear, I'm no iPhone apologist. After recently switching to Android, I don't see myself returning to the iPhone anytime soon.
