The LG Ultra Fine 5k is the same display as the iMac 27 uses. There were issues in the past but I think they were mostly resolved (also with image retention).
If you can find one - it's probably the best option. It's pricey, it's old, it's mostly out of stock. But if you need it NOW and it's available, it's probably the best option really.
A new panel is just around the corner from Apple/LG, probably using mini Led tech. They are going to release a new, bigger iMac, and rumor has it they will sell it separately as well. Maybe not initially though. I think I am going to wait it out. The current monitors on the market all suck. :(

It’s available at my local Mac store, but I am happy to wait.

I’ve always had an iMac so this is my proper first venture into the MacBook Pro for animation/video use.
I wonder when the new iMacs will be introduced. Shouldn’t be too long now.
I’m looking forward to the portability with a laptop. Especially when green screening.

If they take the panel rumored for the next iMac (27" mini-LED w/ ProMotion) and create a well-designed Thunderbolt Display out of it... They will sell A LOT. As long as it's at or under $3k they would have a sale from me for sure.

Interested in a new monitor as well to go with my new 16" M1 Max.

Wish there were cheaper options in the >30" HDR category. I am considering the LG's new 31.5" OLED UltraFine 32EP950-B as a cheaper alternative to Apple's XDR display, but stock has been very limited.

Do you think it will be any good for gaming. I.e. >=120hz and 1ms response like OLED ?

I have an AOC U32U1 on my M1 Mac Mini. I like the design. It doesn’t have the same ppi as a Retina display, though. But it looks sharp and has 600 nits brightness. :)

Is it any good, do you recommend it?
For a 27" monitor, it's the best that I've used. Compared to the 32" Dell monitor that I have in my office, the image quality on the LG is better, hands down. Sometimes I miss the real estate that the 32" offers, especially if I'm working on a 3D app that demands 2 open windows, such as Rhino+Grasshopper. However, the 32" is a bit much for doing coding or something that I do with smaller windows. Not into having my next turn to see the entire line of code.

Adore my LG 27” 5K. No issues here with a Caldigit TS3 Plus connected to the 16” M1 Max. No, I only get 87W charging but for my uses it’s enough (don’t use internal display etc).

Is there a sub $800 ultrawide model that would be good for pairing with a 14" macbook?
I don't need a monster 38-40" wide monitor - something like 30-32" would prob be more than enough for me.

I have had two LG 5K Monitors for a few years. Started out with 1 and added another. They are great.

I'm using the 28" Samsung UR55 UHD monitor via HDMI on my 16" model. It's a great low-cost option and currently on sale at Best Buy for $300.

Hey all, I have an XDR display as my main monitor but as my second and third monitor, use the LG UltraFine 32UL950-W and these are excellent monitors. I also have 3 LG 27 UltraFine's from Apple and they are excellent as well...but honestly, I'd go with the extra real estate on the LG UltraFine 32UL950-W. Brightness and clarity are amazingly good for the price.

Yep! Really excellent value for money.
Oooohhh, very nice. That's tempting. I'm going to wait out a year to see if Apple puts out a mini-LED consumer display, but if they don't and that rumor fizzles out I'll likely end up with one of the UltraFines. I have the 21" 4K - definitely a little small these days but still an awesome display.
