I have had my SIII for over a year and abuse the crap out of my display, especially using it for gps on long trips from south Cali to northern Cali. Screen remains perfect to this day.

That obviously doesn't happen with all of them, pretty sure that's just a faulty unit. Depending on age and where the customer lives you can get Samsung to do a warranty repair.

Not backpeddling. Nothing can correct being stupid and leaving a bright image in place for days, regardless of screen type. And as you can see, burn in can be found on Apple devices too. CRT and plasma were infamous for burn in and that is the image people have in their minds.
To sum up: No display technology is perfect.

This was what my old iPhone 4 (New from October 2012) suffered with too.
It's since been replaced with a new phone after the power button died on it.

Of course that's an extreme example. I merely commented "susceptible" in terms of the greater possibility of screen burn in with AMOLED screens. That's important to me since I frequently use my phone in a convertible in full sunlight. Waze and other apps.

Fair enough. But if you get unlucky it can happen on any screen, as the iPhone 4 picture above shows. AMOLEDs have come a long way and I don't think the issue is as prevalent as it once was.
Clearly Apple is doomed. They should just stop making iPhones at this point. Samsung should take over the entire industry and flood the market with Galaxy phones.

FWIW, iOS7 (beta3) has this capability. Hasn't ever been an issue for me but I can certainly see how it might be for others.
