Usually an hour later. So not long now.

Public Beta for iOS was the following day, so if Big Sur is getting it, could tie in with that tomorrow. Though last year, after the first Public Beta, the next one came the same day as the Dev Beta, but a few hours later, as I said above. So, that's some educated guesswork for you 😃

you absolutely do NOT want to use an APFS container. You should stick with a partition for the time being. From release notes:

This is a change from previous macOS versions, and it’s buried enough in the release notes that it will bite a lot of people.

I created a partition in preparation for the Public Beta Release. When it drops, do I run Software Update from my main partition running Catalina (10.15.6)? How do I tell it to install on the newly created partition?

I was able to enroll in the Public Beta for Big Sur just now. However, it then says this:

Maybe it’s coming in a matter of a few minutes or hours…

Is the public beta supposed to be different than dev beta 3?.. anyways I was also eager to try Big Sur after reading the release notes of beta 3 seemed like they fixed a lot of things so I decided to give it a go on my main work machine and call me crazy I installed it 30 minutes before my morning meeting lol.. it all went great I did not lost anything or even had to reinstall any software all my stuff works like normal. This was my experience so far with my MBP 16. I upgraded directly from Catalina 10.15.6 btw.
