Maybe google is doing some server side fixes for YouTube. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🥺😂

live now videos play; everything else (here) defaults to 360p (as if it were 1998!) and does not play. hope someone figures this out... or, we wait, for next beta...

EDIT: if this is useful info for anyone: if i go to youtube studio, i can click on one of my video links, and am taken to that page... and the video plays. and i seem to be able to search from there, and play videos.

so it seems that playing (non-live) videos from the HOME page is where the problem is (at least for me).

EDIT 2: but, sigh, it's very inconsistent, so what i've written above is not definitive.

just reported on feedback assistant

Can‘t be bothered turning on my MacBook pro again, keep us updated please 🙏 most likely google is doing some background work on YouTube for safari.

all seems fine in chrome, the problem is in safari

it seems that videos with ads don't play... anyone else have observations??...

ah, yikes. NO videos (except 'live now" videos) are playing on youtube (i tried disabling content blockers, disabling wipr...).

All good for me in Safari, just watched Colbert's series of videos from his show on Friday for the West Wing special.

Looks good here. Watching a video right now and got hit with an ad before it played. Granted its a pro shot live show from like 83 so its not the greatest quality but it looks like it always has here.

FINALLY looks like they fixed the damn weather and clock widgets! Rebooted three or four times already fighting with a VirtualBox install and its kept my city on the weather widget and Los Angeles set on the clock widget after all of em. Ok now they can release it.

YouTube still not working, only live stream videos, anyone heard anything from apple?

apple? has anyone ever heard anything from apple?

we need some advanced tech person to figure it out (or we need to wait for the next beta).

i've tried disabling wipr, rebooting. disabling the content blocker for youtube, rebooting. but i can't figure the common denominators, since i can get some videos playing, from different starting points.

if anyone else is experiencing this, chime in. and if anyone has any ideas... (meanwhile, all is well in chrome)...

Yep, looks like that way. Ah well, YouTube doesn't work on Safari but works just fine on Microsoft Edge.
Back to Edge days again now :(

I didn't see the failure until I signed into my Google/Youtube account. Sadly signing out doesn't repair the damage, still fails.

got it: you need to show the developer menu in safari (it's under advanced preferences). then go to experimental features >VP9 decoder & disable that. & youtube works again in safari...

This has been discussed elsewhere, it doesn't work for everyone and it doesn't work for me. Some people have said the 'fix' is to enable to setting above it 'VP9 SW decoder on battery', this also does not work for everyone, including myself.

so, disabling this and quitting safari, then re-opening didn't fix it for you? ah, well... worked here. so, caveat: may fix the issue... and may not.

seems apple needs to sort this out with the next beta (or whatever comes next). i did report it in feedback assistant (before i got it sorted).

Unfortunately not, it does appear to be a bug with the VP9 decoder though, so although it doesn't work for some people, still worth reporting and sending your system logs. Do any Apple devices have HW VP9 decoding? 🤔

I'm working around the issue by using IINA to open streams from within Safari as it has an 'open in IINA' extension so all these failing video's are only a single click away. I fully recommend IINA and would consider it an essential install for any Mac users. Superb app IMO.
