America is a place where if you go around telling people how great you are for long enough, they will start to believe it. Beyonce is at best a decent pop singer, she is no where near the musical genius she and her fans like to fantasize that she is.
Agree, I do hope my heavy sarcasm came off as intended. 🤣

I love Billie I do but this last album wasn’t it and I feel like there are others on this list who could have had this award.

Beyoncé for example released a country album reminding and educating ppl on the fact that country music originated in black culture and took it back.
Country music traditions are more rooted in Irish, Celtic - both lyrically, rhythmically as well as with regard to instruments ( fiddle, guitar).
Of course the banjo has its origin in African instruments and became popularised as a relatively low cost instrument perfect for the Appalachian country music scene.
Based on my understanding of musical genre history it would nevertheless be disingenuous to claim that country music originated in "Black music culture".
By contrast "Blues" is a genre that is much more associated with and originated from Black American culture.

I’ve got to wonder why we even do these sorts of lists and awards anymore. It’s such a diverse ecosystem of artists this is going to be more divisive than anything else. Then again, I despise the academy awards too
Yeah, monoculture has been six feet under for a while.

-There are no more ubiquitous distribution systems for culture.

The algorithms all have us watching our own, personalized TV channel, metaphorically speaking.

Take me: I do listen to Billy Eillish sometimes and know about her latest album.

But I have no clue about what awards shows are still running and who is winning awards.

I guess there must be some sort of effective promotional element to them, something that pays off for the music industry by congratulating itself.

But, anecdotally, I don’t know anyone who’s talking about them.

I can mumble depressing things into a microphone too. Where is my award?
Right here!! It's not a wafer, but it's as close as the real thing as possible! And you can put it on a wall!

Not precisely. I live in the city that is the birthplace of country music....literally, we're recognized by Congress as that and we have a museum for it. I am not a country fan but you can't live here and not know the history. Jimmie Rodgers created his version of country from a mix of genres and Jazz and Blues were a part of that. Traditional Gospel and even localized music played in hollers, was also part of its genesis. Country was born out of traditional black music BUT ALSO born out of traditional white music.

Interesting thanks. It does make more sense that it was born out of both white and black music, not one or the other.

What city is that out of interest? My only guess would be Nashville, but maybe that's like more modern country?

Apple today announced that Billie Eilish has been named Apple Music's Artist of the Year in 2024 for her "extraordinary impact" throughout the year.

Eilish receives a physical Apple Music Award featuring a custom 12-inch silicon wafer.

"Since day one, Apple Music has supported my music and artistry, and I am both honored and humbled to receive this recognition as Artist of the Year this many years into my career," said Eilish. Apple featured Eilish's music in its 2018 holiday season ad when she was just 16 years old, and Apple TV+ released a documentary about her in 2021.

Eilish released her third full-length studio album this year, called "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT," and Apple describes it as the "best music of her career." The album reached the number-one spot on Apple Music's all-genre albums chart in 138 countries worldwide.

In addition, her soundtrack "What Was I Made For?" from the Barbie film won a GRAMMY Award for Song of the Year this year.

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter was also named Apple Music's Artist of the Year in 2019. She is the first artist to win the award twice.

How much does that really count

It absolutely did not “remind and educate ppl that country music originated in black culture” because that’s demonstrably not true.
Country music originated in the south particularly in Appalachia.

It's intertwined, with some roots going still further back:

The origins of country music trace back to the pioneers from the British Isles who settled in the eastern American Appalachian mountain range. The genre, first known as Hillbilly music, emerged as a fusion of the ballads and folk songs of the English, fiddle and dance music of the Scots-Irish with the banjo and blues influence of African Americans. The documented origins and collection of early country music songs by folklorists such as Cecil Sharp, means much of what we know as traditional American music can be traced back to British roots.

Billie Eilish labeled as a "singer" is a bit of a reach, too -- Unless talking quietly to music is considered singing, in which case I guess I'm a singer too!
To be fair, I haven't heard Billie's latest so maybe she does actually sing?
Wrong. She relies on inflections in her tones which by definition makes it signing. Contrary to Rap which is simply vocal poetry which has no inflections. Rap is not singing. Billy is.

Upon release, the album soared to No. 1 on Apple Music’s all-genre albums chart in 138 countries worldwide. Nominated for seven more GRAMMY Awards this year — including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

People over 50 need to listen to more contemporary music. I’m definitely in that group (over 50 and then some) and my music taste goes from music ensembles (seeing Max Richter early next year and maybe Hania Rani) to alternative music like Alt-J, Sigur Ros. But that doesn’t mean we can’t also appreciate artists like Eilish, London Grammar or even the older stuff like the Bee Gees [sic]. So much good original music out there.

We all have a lane, but some people can work through their teenage years from 30-40 years ago, and appreciate contemporary if they try. Having the same old stuff on repeat bores me and everyone around them. I’m talking to you Swifties and 80's-ophiles alike. Snoozefest

These things are gorgeous

Each award features Apple's custom silicon wafer suspended between a polished sheet of glass and a machined and anodized aluminum body. The wafers start as a perfect 12-inch disc of silicon with nanometer level flatness. Copper layers are deposited and patterned by ultraviolet lithography to create connections between billions of transistors.

I love Billie but they should shine some light on artists that need the attention. She’s doing fine

She's insufferable. I shudder to think about who the finalists were, if she won.

Music today, outside of a couple genres, is so derivative and lacking in actual talent. Rick Beato, a music producer, has a YT channel and talks at length about the piss poor state of modern "Pop" type music.
Rick Beato has some good videos but most of the time he’s just grinding an axe that modern pop music is bad not because of quality but because it’s not the same as the music he likes from the last

There’s tons of AMAZING non-popular music out there. Find it and support it instead of doing this

Unless it’s actually about nostalgia and not wanting anything to change, which would mean it’s not the quality of the music but your response to it

Billie Eilish has enjoyed a positive working relationship with Apple since winning her first top honor in 2019.

Apple has supported her career by funding her documentary, promoting her latest album with a listening party, and heavily promoting her interviews with Zane Lowe.

While she undoubtedly deserves recognition for her talent, this year's honor feels somewhat questionable.

It seems likely that she'll be headlining an Apple Music-sponsored Super Bowl Halftime Show before the decade ends.

So many triggered ppl in the comments lol. And I can see why and know why. See Beyoncé at the CMT awards 2016

That Beyoncé country album SLAPS. While I have a few of her biggest hits in my library, I could take or leave her music for the most part over the years. But that album transformed me into being a fan of hers simply because of the sheer amount of work that went into it as well as proving her versatility as an artist and producer. I genuinely can’t remember the last time I was so surprised and impressed by something new in the pop music scene before I listened to that album.

It’s not my favorite (that’s her third album I am Sasha fierce) but I love it and the fact she brought attention to blsxk country music and artist which often get overshadowed. Of course she didn’t get the recognitions that she deserves from country music awards but I’m also not surprised since she doesn’t fit their box lol.
Is that true? Guess it makes sense in a way but never knew that.
It does. Country music (like most genres) have a lot of black influence.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This place is always entertaining. Beyoncé is the queen of appropriation 💜
lol appropriation? Because only one demographic can make one genre of music? lol. I think you need to look that definition up.

At best? 8 number one albums, most awarded Grammy winning artist a part of one of the top 5 female girl groups, had the second highest grossing tour ever, a business woman….its okay to not like someone for whatever trivial reason you have but to discredit someones talent is literally ridiculous.

I don’t care for a lot of artists but I respect their talent.
PFFFFTTT HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA!!
Oh, oh man. Oh that was good.
Oh that laugh was the highlight of my day. It’s all downhill from here, but thanks for that.
I can always tell the type of person based on their comments lol. Enough said.

Country music originated in the south particularly in Appalachia.

You really should educate yourself for falsely claiming stuff. A simple google search would answer this.

Yes African Americans are largely the originators of country music (and for that matter rock and roll). Google is your friend.

I had no idea until beyonces album and I actually went to do the research myself. IMG_0044.png
