I've not tried this, but apparently if you're stuck with a black screen you need to open ANOTHER blackra1n.exe (with the last one still open) and make it rain again.

Can someone who has gotten it to work explain it step by step to me :/
Also, is there a way to export my contact list from my device to the computer, because that's kinda the thing I'm worried about losing.

Instructions from ModmyI, seems correct because on Geohots twitter, he says you gotta do it twice too.

1. Make sure you have newest verison of iTunes
2. Upgrade using iTunes
3. Download blackra1n from blackra1n.com
4. (after done upgrading) Close iTunes
5. Run blackra1n and click make it ra1n
6. When in recovery mode close iTunes again and blackra1n
7. Open blackra1n again and click make it ra1n again
8. After reboot go into blackra1n on spring board (never restore from backup in itunes)
9. Install Cydia (make sure you have internet)
10. Open Cydia after it closes and confirms it works then do 11
11. Delete blackra1n on springboard (open it and tap uninstall)

See thats not my problem I don't get a plain black screen.

I get the standard Apple recovery screen. NOT the blackrain image thats supposed to show. then iTunes freaks out saying I have to restore. I have let the phone just sit there when it did it and everything and NOTHING. it's effing frustrating.

I will try that next thank you!

Now my question is can I sync from my 3.1.2 backup once everything is good and done with the jailbreak? Or am I going to run into issues. Normally I set up as a new iPhone but if possible I want to sync from my newest backup.

Nope still nothing So when iTunes relaunched and gave the recovery mode message I closed it and blackra1n per those instructions and then opened blackra1n again and all it does is say "waiting on iPhone" and does nothing else.

Still looking at the iPhone and the "stock" recovery screen showing the usb and iTunes image.

At this point I don't think I will be donating the developer. App is kinda crap if you ask me.

I don't if I should try again or what.
First of all, I get as far as attempting to install SBSettings, then it crashes. Is it worth it to keep trying, or should I wait till some other methods come out?

Can someone please tell me if it's possible to revert to Official firmware without any trace of JB when it's done?

Thanks in advance.

Followed suggestions in this thread which pointed to the blackra1n comments which suggested if you get stuck on "running" start over and try again.

Well, this WORKED for me. Must have tried blackra1n five times or more but it eventually worked.

So, if you get stuck, just keep trying.

Yes just restore your device in iTunes to clear it out. That wipes everything clean.

There is no need to restore it before doing the jailbreak, for those doing that. But I guess that can't hurt.

I was having the same problem trying to use blackrain in Windows7. Then I chose under the options to run blackrain in WindowsXP SP3 compatibility modus and as an administrator and it worked directly like a charm! This was the fastest jailbreak I have ever done :)

What you mean start over and try agian, like close Blackra1n, and click Make it ra1n agian, or just restore, and then try agian!?

Here's what I did, once.

Before
  • iPhone 3G, 3.01, jailbroken
  • Windows7 Ultimate (32 bit), blackra1n which I installed on the Desktop, right clicked said run as XP-SP3

Procedure
  1. Connected iPhone to laptop
  2. Started iTunes manually
  3. Right clicked the iPhone, Backed up the phone
  4. Updated to 3.1.2
  5. Stopped iTunes
  6. Started blackra1n
  7. It finished.

On iPhone
  1. Started blackra1n
  2. Installed Cydia
  3. Installed all my Cydia apps except MyWi, which doesn't work.

I did not have to restore my iPhone, all the App Store apps were there after I updated to 3.1.2.

I think the problem with this JB is that prob everyone attempting it has got a slightly different setup with many differing tweaks and files left over from previous JBs.

If you attempt it and have no problems and its done in seconds then you most likely have a setup much like Geohot's - if you have probs then I'm betting you can't even remember the tweaks you have installed theres that many of them!

I've had a right game getting it working on my 3g but TBH half the time I attempt an official update itunes throws a wobbly anyway.

I've found the best way to get it to work is to totally clear everything from your phone with a restore to official 3.1.2 also setting your phone up as new, syncing your contacts etc, doing a backup, then running blackra1n.

Also don't restore your JB apps from a backup - thats a nightmare. Just install one by one - I know its a PITA but at least that seems to work.

When I hit 'Make it Ra1n' the app crashes. This has happened multiple times on two Parallels Virtual Machines running Vista and 7.

I THINK I FIGURED OUT EVERYONES PROBLEM!!!!! I tried this over 30 times and it never worked... I have an iphone 3g and followed the steps properly.... This last time I tried something different and it worked!!!!! I opened task manager and clicked on "AppleMobileDeviceService.exe" and clicked "End Process" and it worked flawlessly!!!!

Ive got a pretty big problem, Itunes doesnt see my Iphone in Recovery Mode.

I clicked Make it Ra1n, and it got stuck at Runnning...

Now itunes doesnt see it.

OK, I had this problem too.... Close out everything.... open up Task Manager... click "AppleMobileDeviceService.exe" and end the task... Then open up iTunes.... itunes will give you an error.... then close out itunes and open up BlackRa1n and run it... it will work..
