Blu-ray in an iMac being a deal breaker for people? I don't get that. For me, I don't have a BluRay player, I will probably never own one, I'm sure.

Well we really can't have a hearty discussion with the narrow minded, can we?

You pretty much ended your own thread in the first few sentences.

I've found out what a waste of breath (or in this case, a waste of typing) it is to talk to people who have never given blu-ray a chance. Oh well.

And my prediction:

All these people not caring about Blu-Rays on Macs will shut-up as soon as Apple starts including them. :)

100 percent agreed but to me its not like i 100 percent need to have one i have a ps3 in my room same as my computer its simple but i think if i ever got a Macbook i would want to carry around my collection but to point out to alot of Blu Ray movies have digital Copies so either way id be happy to have it but its a feature that i can live with out for now.

After watching Blu-ray movies on my Mac, DVDs just plain suck. Blu-ray is already here for Macs, you just have to put up with jumping through the hoops to get it. But once ripped, Blu-ray on Mac = total awesomeness. :)

I took a Bluray rip on a thumb drive to the Apple store today to check it out on the 27" they have there. It was stunning. A few of the employees even commented on it.

Last paragraph of the August 2007 article:

"Less compelling to you, the reader: I have sources close to Apple that tell me that Blu-ray support is planned, and is already in the works. Also, not supporting Blu-ray or HD DVD would be completely ridiculous, as it's rather clear that the studios aren't going to let go of Blu-ray anytime soon (fate of HD DVD is less certain). I don't think Apple is ready to tell its customers in 12 months that they can't watch Blu-ray discs on their laptops because Apple will sell the same movies on iTunes. "

I love me some Blu-Ray, but only on my plasmas.

I don't think I could watch a movie on my iMac knowing I have a couple plasmas in the house. Plus, it would irritate me with the high resolution. A Blu-Ray is 1080p, the iMac is 1440p. I would have to stretch the movie to fill the screen and the quality would slightly decrease.

At the same time, of course, Blu-Ray could be used to make HD films. But there we are again. I don't have an HD camcorder nor am I a filmmaker. Perhaps when I have kids I'll be making more home movies, but that's a year or two away.

I feel the same way. I have a couple big HD LCDs plus PS3, timewarner HD, and Netflix HD on the XBox. The HD is there and I have a means to view it... the benefit to my setup is that I can watch HD and use the iMac at the same time.

I have an HD camcorder, but I also have a big fat mvix in HD. When I bring home movies or any movies (standard or HD) anywhere they go with me on the mvix. I don't want to force the extended family to update to a BR player or HD TV just to see the kids kick butt in Judo.

i can live without blu ray as long as there is blu ray rips but i don't own any plasma tv so i will go for blu ray on my imac 27. blu ray is the future, dvd is dying soon, so, getting a cheap drive when they hit 30 bucks i will get it, but as i said, i can live without it, just an extra=P

Bluray is nice. No doubt about that.

However, for me, DVDs and DL movies are fine. Don't need the quality. Who knows, maybe someday I will change my opinion.

Yep, I agree.

I didn't even think of the whole Bluray thing until some people started making a huge deal about it. I mean, it would be like a nice ADD-ON to it.
I wouldn't even consider it a feature. It's not something I would even use actually.

Let me have the counterpoint here.

Not a deal breaker by any means.

However, I do take a lot of vacation
camcorder footage and do editing within
iMovie. I would like the ability to burn
those movies to Blu-ray so I can preserve
them in their true HD glory instead of
being downconverted to DVD.

The drive Apple would have used in their systems would not have been a burner anyway, just a DVD burner with the ability to read Blu Ray disks.

Seriously, for those of you who have not played blu-ray movies before, I personally love it. If its not for the price of the media, I would have gotten more movie.

But I agree I wouldn't use 'mac not having blu-ray capability' as a reason for putting off a purchase. Can always use an external drive once mac supports it. I am sure blu-ray will be the norm for pc and mac as the 50GB capacity will allow for much more storage space.

Again not every one gets to download stuff at high speed.

If the OP doesn't care, why does he have to start yet another unhelpful thread?

Am I the only one that could care less about Blu-ray? It certainly wouldn't have been a deal breaker in me getting my new iMac! Even with the 27" iMac I just got, it's still way too small for me to enjoy a movie at home. For that, I watch it on our TV. Much more comfortable on the couch in my family room or lying in bed late at night. Sitting in front of my computer would be the very last place I'd want to watch a movie.

To each his own,
Steve R

No, you're not the only one. I don't care about BluRay either. However, I also don't own a TV - for the simple reason that I --hate-- TV with a passion. It's a drug to sedate people, and, regarding the state of the world, it works extremely well.

Anyway, my computers are the only places where I and my woman watch movies. But I still don't care about the DRM-infested BluRay restrictionware.

I didn't start the thread to be controversial, start any arguments, or p*ss anyone off. I only started it because there are SO many people posting about how upset they are about the new iMac not having Blu-ray, I was curious if I was one of the only ones out there that could care less if the iMac had it or not, for ME, not anyone else. I personally have no need for it. Obviously, others, many others do, and I now understand why. I didn't realize some of the other applications for blu-ray. I thought it was merely to watch movies with but I see after reading the many replies on this thread that there's much more to it.

Sorry if I upset anyone with my simple-minded post. It was merely to see it there were more people like me who were of similar minds on this issue.

Have a nice day!

My belief regarding Mac users and blu-ray is this.

Steve Jobs says its a bag of hurt.
there are 2 camps on this, what Steve says is gospel and the other is they want the blu-ray experience.

Let's look at MMS and the iphone.
2 years without it and apple loyalists were perfectly happy skirting around the lack of functionality. many wanted it but the loyalists said its useless and antiquated technology. How many people are happy having MMS?

I think many people would enjoy having a blu-ray especially on a 27 inch display.
it would have to be incorporated (raise the price) and not offered as an option. That's because it would create too many skus as an option and give the current and future customers too many choices.

Look, most of us don't care about Blu Ray, but it turns out that some people do like it for backing up instead of external drives or DVDs. And I suppose its true the Blu Ray disks would be a good backup option, but for most of us, well, we don't use it.

Thats the main reason why people want Blu Ray.

I care. And Apple being a Blu Ray board member and a consumer electronic company should care more. I won't buy a mac desktop if it dosn't have it, and with windows 7, mac desktops are already loosing their appeal.

Some Dell laptops even have Blu Ray, I think now that it should be an option on iMacs and Mac Pros.

It should not be an option. If it is going to be included, it should be part of the superdrive; otherwise, support for external BR recording and playback.

You see, the trouble is if it is in the superdrive, it will bump the cost a Blu Ray drives are quite costly. Then people who don't need them won't like the price bump. But it they are not in the iMac at all, the people who want them won't be happy. If its an option, everyone will be happy. Until Blu Ray drives are as cheap as DVD drives, then it should become part of the superdrive of every iMac...

What do you think? Personally, I don't need Blu Ray at all, but it seems a lot of people do...
