You see, the trouble is if it is in the superdrive, it will bump the cost a Blu Ray drives are quite costly. Then people who don't need them won't like the price bump. But it they are not in the iMac at all, the people who want them won't be happy. If its an option, everyone will be happy. Until Blu Ray drives are as cheap as DVD drives, then it should become part of the superdrive of every iMac...

What do you think? Personally, I don't need Blu Ray at all, but it seems a lot of people do...

Apple cannot sell a super drive that isn't super; otherwise they would have to list the "not-so-super drive" and the "super-drive" which includes bluray...

Or would you rather have them list the superdrive and the super-duperdrive.

Yeah that would be OK for a while I suppose...:D

King Kong's "johnson"

Well we really can't have a hearty discussion with the narrow minded, can we?

You pretty much ended your own thread in the first few sentences.

I've found out what a waste of breath (or in this case, a waste of typing) it is to talk to people who have never given blu-ray a chance. Oh well.

It may have ended if all responses were in opposition to his initial post. Alas, they are not. There are those of us who would like to co-sign our brave tread creator's feelings and say stuff your blu ray where the sun don't shine!!! LOL

Just joking!! Really though, for now, I use a PS3eeeee for that... :apple:

For others who require a stack of the latest doo-dads to rival King Kong's "johnson"...you will just need to hold off on joining in the fun. I am sure Apple is waiting for the most opportune moment ($$$) to add such a feature.

If i wanna watch Movies i use Streaming services or blu ray for PS3, who wanna watch it on the Mac. Only AppleTV or mac mini could use it, but i don't need it since i got a ps3

i dont know if anyone has said this before but, most people who want to burn blu-ray dvds for the "hd" needs a "hd" camcorder with "hd" enables with lots of mega pixels. Then.. it would be worth burning and watching blu-ray.

HD DVD can play at great quality..

just my thoughts..

I keep saying I'm waiting for blu-ray to buy, but the truth is, I don't even own a blu-ray player nor do I plan to purchase blu-ray films.

So now I have to find something else to make me procrastinate buying... :p

Anyone who asks what is wrong with watching
DVDs sounds as if they never saw Blu-ray.

Yes, DVD still sports an amazing picture, but
Blu-ray is noticeably better.

I am talking in general here as I am not the
kind of person who would watch Blu-ray on
my computer. I would say that these new
gorgeous iMac 16:9 displays would show the
benefits of Blu-ray over DVD.

I have watched Blu Ray, but I don't really want or need the better picture...

And in two years there will be an even better tv picture and the media giants will tell us BR is obsolete And sucks and we should all toss our BR media, just like DVD today. Its remarketing, same old story. My question is if I've already paid the studios for a copy of a movie why am I paying full price to purchase the same media content again?

HDTV is deployed since 15 years ago. It's your fault to have bought DVDs.

Yes I totally agree with you.

Well I've browsed the posts and now for my two pence worth..... It seems here we all go again.

The merits of Blu ray are significant, it is a good format and holds a lot of data but still only 50Gb worth. And will it survive the current downturn before it becomes defunct.

Blu Ray has come about from working both with the film industry and the giants that are sony, but is that a good thing. In part yes, we get very good quality home viewing but bad in that it could possibly become a victim of it's non success. HD tv has been a big flop, BR uptake extremely slow (not helped by the HD DVD battle, plus the slow down in all the economies.

There's no getting away that to upgrade to and get the true experience from Blu Ray is going to be expensive (admittedly I've always and am still a Blu Ray snob, in that if it's worth doing, then do it right, having experienced friends efforts to do it on the cheap and it fall short of its ability and thus leaving people thinking why did they bother).

BR is here from day one to give people the ability to replicate a cinema in there living room and was based on a spec of 1080p tv's not 720p or 1080i as most people initially upgraded to and a bitrate transfer of about 28 to 50meg. It also supports 7.1 dolby TrueHD which in it's self requires a new surround sound amp plus 8 speakers, cabling, stands etc. It can be used with less but the sound is always a bit dull and muffled. and if you get to speak to some in the studios they'll admit it really could do with a cinema signal processor to handle the TrueHD.

Minimum Requirements.
40" 1080p high contrast preferably LED TV
1 Central sound speaker
2 front channel side sound speakers
2 rear channel side sound speakers
2 infill side speakers
1 base speaker
1 7.1 surround sound amplifier.
preferably 1 dolby trueHD signal processor
1 Blu Ray player.
2 cinema chairs for correct positioning.
Sound reflecting blinds to cover windows
Sound absorption foam for hard surfaces.

etc the list goes on.

To put all this in a computer and try to sell it for less than 1500 quid is not going to happen.

We all might want to own a ferrari but how many of us would get to thrash it everyday.

This doesn't even take into account the progress to RedOne resolution of 2160p nor the advancement of 3D viewing which is already under extensive development within the gaming industry. If this comes of age then BR won't be able to cope and we'll need yet another format capable of holding even more data.

We are all aware of the short term merits of BR and I think it's something Apple should either get on with and put it in there for people as an option. Along with the options to upgrade sound cards etc.

Least we remember though that BR supports 1080p and that most Mac's are superior to this.

We are also aware of networks supporting double what BR can deliver. Seoul already has 100meg Broadband as standard. Double what BR can deliver. If only the other networks would catchup but then there is the Digital Rights Management issues which will probably take another 20 twenty years or so to sort out.

Lol actually my wife and I own less than 25 DVDs, we just aren't into the whole tv culture at all, because so much of the content is dark violent and negative. Tv is/was the most powerful yet most abused media delivery system in the world. Point I was trying to make is the studios and hardware makers are asking us all to shell out lots of coin and for what? Steve Jobs and Apple see it. The ROI for Blue Ray just isn't worth it for a computer. We were all quite thrilled with the quality of DVD until the studios and hardware makers told us otherwise.

You got it in one. And HMV in Grafton street doesn't exactly have what you would call an extensive selection of product let alone there rip off prices.

Blu Ray is there for people who want the emersion in the cinema experience, if that's not someone's thing, then don't bother..... DVD is good enough.

I just got a new 1080p 40" tv and a ps3 slim this year but I didn't have any blu-ray discs. Last week I did the netflix 2 week trial and got a few blu-ray movies.. now I'm a believer, I won't buy dvds ever again. Apple really should get on the ball with this. Tons of people use their computer to watch movies, and the screens can definitely take advantage of greater than SD resolutions so it's a no brainer

DVDs have only been around widespread for the last 10 years or so... Its still a long time before they become old tech...

CD ROM is starting to become old tech. All it is used for now is songs really, even for that there are memory sticks, iPods, iTunes that can connect to your stereo. And games now mainly come on DVDs.

But DVDs are still 100% fine, I think that their quality is great and why would you need more?

We get all of our movies in Blu ray through Netflix. More than once, I would have liked to have been able to watch a particular movie upstairs in the "man cave" on my iMac. Simple as that.
hickster

Well I've browsed the posts and now for my two pence worth..... It seems here we all go again.

The reality that you fail to understand is that people don't need anything to understand that BD offers superior picture and sound to DVD. I've seen plenty of friends start to buy their movies on BD even though they have a modest system. Small 720P TV and no surround sound for example.

The reason being that when you buy a film you are typically a fan of the movie and will keep and re-watch the disc for many years to come. How many years will it be before streaming or direct download of titles even comes close to Blu-ray 50GB capability, special features, uncompressed audio, etc?

We buy our favorites on Blu-ray and it would be nice to be able to use them on the Mac, even if it were simply for the purpose of being able to make a lower quality version that was usable for travel, playback on the iphone, etc. It would also be nice to edit HD video on the Mac and actually burn it to something HD for playback. Whodathunkit?

There seem to be an awful lot of haters on here who want to condemn those who want this feature, I fail to see what the problem of Blu-ray as a BTO, etc, is for these people. Go ahead and continue watching your DVDs in crummy resolution and leave those of us who want maximum quality to it.

P.S, to those of you who say DVD is good enough, try watching a DVD on a 60" 1080P TV, it's painful to watch, not just because of the crap resolution but because of the lower quality color, contrast, audio, etc.

I personally don't care about having Blu Ray built in to my computer however, for those who have large video files and the need for large capacity storage there are companies that sell external Blu Ray burners for the MAC that also come with Toast Titanium Pro to burn the discs. Sooooo, what's the problem:confused: If I had a camcorder that is probably what I would do. Then put the Blu Ray disc in my Sony Blu Ray player and show it on my Sony XBR7. Super HDTV, I love it.
