No, call them! We did, we spoke to an AppleCare manager and he saw there was a problem since we have two iPads with the same issue.both out of warranty. They already replaced one and we are just waiting for the other to ship to the store. If people keep calling, warranty or no, maybe they will acknowledge the issue formally and it will become less spotty for for people to get help from apple.

I ended up calling to let them know that I wanted the case formally logged but I did not escalate up to a manager. I will try calling again to push the issue.

What will it take for MacRumors to post a story on their front page? The publicity would definitely help. This thread is huge and it only takes a casual glance to realize that there is clearly an issue on Apple's end. So many users with the same issue...in the same spot.

Well my 10.5 iPP started to show 2 bright spots on the screen yesterday. Just inside the warranty so Apple have sent a box through for me to return the iPad to them. (Bought in January from the refurbished store.)

Anyone in the uk outside of the 12 month warranty, don't forget about consumer law. You should be covered up to 6 years. I have had a couple of items replaced by Apple outside of the standard 12 months warranty.

Message sent via an iPad 2 that I bought new 7 1/2 years ago without any screen blemishes.

I know quite a few people who constantly have Touch ID problems.

My replacement had Touch ID probablement, the button was not fitting correctly and the screen was yellowish at bottom.... I had to ask for a second replacement. So I expect to have again white spot issue, clock is ticking.
Apple genius said they never heard about...

Would you mind sharing which Apple Store you got it replaced?

Sorry for the late reply, but it was Brisbane city. My dad's had the same problem, took his to Carindale and they replaced it too. Unfortunately my mum's gen 1 12.9 had the same issue, albeit slightly further up and a bit off to the right but understandably it was too far out of warranty so they quoted $800 to replace.

Most recent "class action lawsuit!" story a day or two ago was regarding a lack of air filters on the fans of iMacs causing dust to appear inside the screen. Surely if that group of disgruntled users can get an Apple-hungry lawyer's attention, this issue can! Not that I am thrilled about the plague of class-action lawsuits, but perhaps that's the only way for Apple to officially recognize this and address it.

I have the same bright spot on my iPad Pro 10.5”. I have it in a Logitech slim combo case bought at the Apple Store.

Mine also has an intermittently sticky home button which I’ve demonstrated in store but which no Apple employee would acknowledge strangely enough. I went to the others in store and could not feel it on the new ones but could on mine yet two apple geniuses could not feel it. They said they would place it but convinced me to wait till a date closer to the end date of my warranty (July 2019), which makes sense. Not acknowledging a defect is a business or legal prompted policy I suppose but still it was frustrating not having anyone agree.

Anyway, I’m glad Apple has such a good replacement policy, at least from my experience here in Toronto, Canada.

I’m curious to know whether the spots are only cosmetic or do they hamper functionality?

I believe they’re pressure points, i’ve had a few on my first 10.5 as well. Don’t think they hamper with functionality.

Apple store employee looked at it and asked if i used the pencil often, or if i bumped it into something. I did use the pencil on regular basis, but that should not be an issue given this device is designed to go with pencil use. Bumping it into something, I’m sure I’ve never done as I take very good care of my gadgets.

They took it in under warranty, received a brand new one and sold it straight away.
Bought the new 12.9” right after. Hopefully we aren’t seeing the same thing happen on these new devices.

Yep another iPad Pro 10.5 checking in. This is the one device that i baby more than any other devices so definitely was not caused by anything i did. Glad i have the apple care+ on it (even though based on the responses on this thread, I shouldn’t need to since it sounds more like a engineering defect more than anything) because I’d be almost out of warranty by now and that would be sketchy. The spot is the same as everyone else’s - about 10cm above the home button. I’ve long had the suspicion that there was something wrong with the screen but I never looked at it closely because it hasn’t really bothered me until today. I suspect it’s been getting worst over time because today it really bothered me, then i went on google and this is the first thread I found and was pretty shocked at what I saw.

I’m not in my home country right now and the country I’m in don’t have the big apple stores so I’ll probably wait the month until I’m back home in North America before making a genius appointment.

My question is, is there any possibility of upgrading to a iPad 11” while getting this done? Has anyone ever been successful doing that? I’m assuming not, because they still sell the iPad 10.5” and must have a ton of refurbs (especially with all of us having these problems). But if there are anyone that has been susucessful in upgrading to a 11” instead, please speak up so that we know it’s possible and try to aim for that when going in.

Discovered my white spot a week ago, the iPad 10.5 is 15 months old. Limited daily use, otherwise pristine. Called AppleCare, set up an appt. at an Apple Store for last Monday. No luck getting it replaced.

Purchased it with an AMEX card, so I have the one year extra warranty. They require an estimate (as others reported, $449 to replace it) and now waiting to get that all sorted out with AMEX. Not sure I want to get another one without some extended warranty on it.

Long time Apple user (first was the LC), kinda disappointing (and frankly surprised) they have not acknowledged the issue yet.

So if they acknowledged it and offered replacements, then the replacements would eventually have the same problem. Only if they fixed the problem would it stop

Perhaps, but it's hard to know for certain what percentage of units are afflicted by this. Like any problem, the numbers that are affected can appear skewed by the fact that only people who do have the problem are typically going to post about it.

saw it immediately on one of the two floor models of 10.5

this would bug the heck out of me!! feel hopeful it happens less frequently on the 2017 12.9, a model I have

Display models are, in my opinion, showing this problem more clearly. Mine is very faint, buts it’s there and getting worse. So, it seems like more daily use intensify this problem. How could you not see it, this image shows it clearly!

Come on Apple, acknowledge the issue, offer a solution and let’s move on. You have achieved market saturation and you have consumer loyalty, but it won’t last forever if you don’t take care of us.

Hello Gents.
My one year warranty expired two months ago and of course the white spot showed up recently. I do not have Apple care. I think that display should be replaced even out of warranty as it is obvious that this is manufacture issue. What would you advise me?

Take it in and see what happens! Spin that wheel!
I will give it a try, but if they didn't accept this issue and refuse to replace it I think I'm done with Apple!
So many years loyal user, with many Apple devices, and buying a "Pro" device with that low quality parts is just unacceptable!
Common Apple, stop losing your loyal buyers! Lately you are doing it more than ever! You are selling overpriced devices, and without near perfect quality checking? Commooooon!!!

I, too, noticed a bright spot about 5 cm above the home button on my 12.9 Pro 2nd Gen. It's faint, but still noticeable when scrolling on white web pages. I bought my iPad last June, so I still have about 6 months of warranty left. I guess I'll have to try to get it replaced before the warranty expires. I hope Apple does something about this, as this is clearly a manufacturing defect. Very disappointed.

This should be 100% manufacturer issue due to the "curious" fact, that 99.99% of the affected devices has these white spots on the SAME location. One more thing - I suppose that this is due to overheating because of the centered position of the motherboard, where some of the chips get very hot during intensive operations (system updates, gaming etc.), I believe th CPU one. If you take a look on the 10.5 disassembly videos on the net, you will see that this would be the very reason for this issue. I bet on that!!
Apple should take care of all of the affected customers, even out of warranty, there is no other way! This should be escalated in every possible way, by everyone of us!

My god. I cannot believe you guys are struggling to get Apple to acknowledge this issue on a PREMIUM device.

I wouldn't even expect it from a $40 Kindle fire !

Apple is well aware of this issue I’m sure. It just takes another class action lawsuit to get Tim Cook the beancounter to do the right thing

In fairness, Apple acknowledges the issue on every affected unit by replacing it, when under warranty.
What I am struggling to grasp is the true extent of this issue.
Looking at this thread it would seem that every 2017 iPad Pro should be affected. But I doubt that this is really what’s happening. Is it?
I really have no idea, but I would assume that if every unit were affected there would be much more reporting on the media. (As far as I know, not even MR have written an article about it)
On the other side, if the percentage of units affected is small, then the current approach by Apple could be a reasonable one.
