Thanks to all of you on this forum, as soon as I noticed a bright spot on my 10.5 iPad Pro this past Wednesday, I searched this forum for solutions. I chatted with Apple Thursday morning, went into the Glendale Galleria Apple store in the afternoon and walked out with a new 10.5” Pro. I was there maybe 8 minutes.
WHEN did you purchase it? Just wondering how long it took before the spot appeared. I just bought a new iPP 10.5 last night at best buy for $499. But now I'm wondering if i should get apple care or not.

I keep coming close to pulling the trigger on one of these iPads since they're on clearance everywhere but I just can't get passed this issue.

I just wonder how truly widespread it is. I bought one for my wife and mom during black friday sales back in 2017. They haven't said anything (doesn't mean it doesn't exist). I will check both ipads and update this post. I will say though that i have used my wife's 10.5 from time to time and didn't notice anything. At the same time i wasn't really looking for anything either.

Had mine 15 months or so now, with casual, regular use. No bright spot on screen. However, my brightness is rarely over 50% since used indoors primarily.

Hi. I just noticed that I have the exact same thing on my iPad Pro 10.5. However, the warranty expired. How much would it cost to replace it at Apple Store in Canada? If it’s too expensive, i might just keep it and hopes the spot won’t get bigger with time. Would be nice if Apple acknowledges the issue and replace the screens at minimal cost like they did with the iPhone batteries. Now I’m so frustrated that I didn’t sell it 2 months ago to get the new IPP before this issue occurred. ‍♂️

According to their site, it looks like they’d charge you $599 ( https://support.apple.com/en-ca/ipad/repair/service ) but if you purchased with a credit card that extends warranty, I’ve heard that it gets covered under that.

There’s also something vaguely stated on their site about cover under consumer law in Canada which I have no idea about so if someone knows anything about that maybe they could help you out.

As a matter of interest, did you notice this as a result of what you may have read about the problem or did that have no part to play?

I noticed the bright spot earlier this week and start searching on the web. I'm perfectionist and I can't keep on staring at it everytime there is a white background.

If I'm understanding correctly, Apple never acknowledged this issue publicly or addressed it and it was hit or miss when customers brought it in within warranty for a replacement? That's pretty damn absurd IMO, I mean I saw the spot on the display unit at the store and it is really glaringly obvious. Can't believe Apple would allow that to continue in a product for as long as it was out there; if it wasn't for having that potential issue the 10.5 Pro is truly an awesome device I was leaning towards.

Looks like it will be the Air or the Pro for me ( I love the Pro-motion/all screen tech so I'm leaning towards Pro).

Apple also didn't acknowledge the butterfly keyboard as a wide spread issue but we know it's a wide spread issue.

I just love the panel lottery. Soooo, back in the first week of July, I got an express replacement for my "spotted" device.

At the time I noticed that the replacement device (Nov 2017) was colder and brighter than my "broken" device (May 2017). Thought I'd lucked out on the new device until I used it for a week or so and noticed a shadow in the bottom left corner in portrait, a faint dark line across the display (shadow) about half a cm above the home button. This display also went from v cold/blue in the top 2cm, to cool, to warm for the last 4cm to the home button.

I'm well accustomed to display issues so surprised I missed some or all of these.

Thought I'd go for another AC+ express replacement and it arrived today. This device is the exact same week as my original device (May 2017, it arrived with iOS 10.3.2!). Device is warmer consistently across the display, which is good. Slight shadow in the bottom right corner, but when using the SC or ASK this is then in the top-right (battery status etc) so not noticeable.

Still with me? OK.... the bizarre thing is that my warmer display gets less warm when I have TrueTone on, and the colder display of the "brighter" device gets very yellow. The replacement warmer "May" device looks more "normal" with TrueTone on.

Ah well, bit of a tale, but there we are.... fingers crossed this survives Spot-gate until the 2018 devices drop.
How do you find out the manufacturing date?

I had Apple Care, so it covered the replacement.

I bought it on the release date June 2017. My AppleCare ran/runs until June 2019, so I just made it!

I got one from bestbuy recently as well. What’s your build date? The later builds, late 2018-early 2019 seem bright spot free so far according to couple of people who bought one.

I’m sort of at a loss what to do, as I’m the recent owner of an Apple Certified Refurbished 10.5in Pro that I’ve noticed has an ever so slight light patch right where most other people are finding theirs. It’s above the home button in portrait mod and is quit faint at the moment, it took me a while to notice after reading of this issue and thought I’d take a look. Sort of wish I hadn’t :(

Fortunately I’m within the 14 days return period, so this one will definatly be going back. It’s a shame as I really love the device and think it’s the best option out of Apple’s current iPad lineup. However I can’t not bank on this getting worse over time (which it seems to?) and now I don’t feel as confident in just exchanging it for another of the same model.

Any advice from others as to if the issue has gotten worse, or if anyone has changed to a new iPad? I’m looking at the just released Air, but feel it’s a downgrade on the speakers/promotion display. It’s that or the 11” Pro, which I would happily go for, but when you start factoring in the cost of the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen and a folio case, it’s quite pricy when the 10.5in is very similar for my usage overall.

It's not impossible that there are many people with the same issue save for the fact that they are unaware of its existence.

I have just purchased a refurbished 10.5 Pro with AppleCare from Apple. I have reconciled myself to the distinct possibility that I may only get two years use out of the device. If a bright spot does occur after the warranty expires, I'll simply stop using it. Such things annoy me far too much to do otherwise.

But yes, I agree with you about the 10.5 Pro being the best option at present (at least for my purposes). It's a shame that this issue exists, but what can we do except suck it up? At least you are in the lucky position of knowing about the problem in time.

Will they do a swap out under applecare.... on demand ... and is there a deductable ?

Also is the 12.7 affected ?

(trying to work out if 10.5 + apple care is a worse value proposition than 12.7 without).

I'd be looking at the 11" 256GB, but the most difference is quite high for features I don't really want/need.

It's true, at least I noticed so I have the time to make a decision. However I'm not looking for a device that will only last me a few years. Ideally I want to keep it around for much longer than that, which is why I'm considering adding the extra cash for the 11" Pro.

On the other hand, my Mum got her's on release of the 10.5inch and I haven't noticed any bright spot, or had even head of it until I was looking into purchasing one myself. It just seems quite widespread, and its not a possibility of if but when.

1) That you want it to last a few years is perfectly logical. So do I, but I don't possess as much common sense.

2) I have no idea whether it will happen, but I do know that it may well happen.

3) If you are not prepared to take the undeniable risk, and you would not be able to live with a bright spot if one (or more) did occur, then, if you can, I think you should buy the 11" Pro.

That's my advice. I could be wrong, but it's the best I can do. If you were a close relative or really good friend, I would give exactly the same advice.

BTW, your moniker always makes me very hungry.

I find it hard to justify spending 52% more on an 11" iPad that is still limited to 4 GB RAM.

Also remember that the 11" suffers from bending (even out of the box) and an unresponsive screen particularly if screen protectors are used. Neither has been an issue at all with the 10.5" Pro.

I suspect that the 2020 iPad Pro will have a reinforced frame design to deal with the bending issue.

So I’m waiting on a gift card to come in the mail, in the meantime I decided to try out an iPad Pro 11 inch 64 GB model for a few days ( with intent on returning it) and so far the device is certainly a beast. It’s done everything I’ve thrown at it and so far I’m pleased with it, the problem ultimately is the price. With the gift cards, I could end up paying $30 to $80 max for an Air or 10.50 Pro refurbished as opposed to paying $300 plus out of pocket for the 11 inch. I have already tested out a 10.5 Pro so I loved that device as well, and the Air looks like no slouch either. As much as I would love this Pro, it will either be the 10.5 Air or Pro despite the potential bright spot. The Air loses pro motion but has a newer processor....thanks for making this decision easy Apple lol!

How do we know if the 2019 air doesn’t suffer from the same bright spot issue as the 2017 10.5 Pro? They practically have the same panel.
