Not sure if this has been mentioned but I bet this is a thermal problem and there is some sort of chip generating a lot of heat on this spot under the screen and the prolonged heat is damaging the pixels in that specific area. That’s why it’s the same spot on all of these iPads.

I was actually wondering the same thing.
I think will be different. The iPad Air has lost the quad speakers, so I think the component placement inside the new iPad Air would be similar like in the iPad or iPad mini, where below the screen is just a huge battery, whereas below the screen of the 10.5 iPad Pro is a wifi/airport card that its heat causes the screen above to produce the white spot (my hypothesis, see iFixit teardown for more details). It won't be the same with the iPad Air, so maybe no white spot issues anymore. Apple didn't fix the design, they just borrow from previous more reliable iPad internal components design.

The wifi card is placed right below the white spot area. I am curious that this chip produces enough heat overtime that it interacts with the display above it, causing the white spots

Damn, I just ordered a refurbed 10.5. Now, after reading all these posts and knowing Apple never really fixes an issue in a model run, I'm going to take it to the Apple store and get my money back. I don't want to own a product with an ongoing problem. I travel and live overseas and dealing with foreign Apple stores is a PITA.
My iPad mini 2 screen has a problem on the right side and so does my girlfriends. My 2013 MBP has been in for repair too many times including 3 screens.
Really I'm disappointed and don't know what to buy. I'm losing confidence in Apple products.

Maybe that's why they discontinued the iPad Pro 10.5 because they know there are issues with the product.

Traded my 10.5 in on Friday after upgrading to the new 12.9. I knew it had the white spot but I didn’t mention it in the O2 shop on the off-chance they didn’t notice... they did, and they got in contact today to tell me that instead of £310 they can now only offer me under £80.

I think they’re specifically looking out for this. Thankfully I’m not relying on the money, but ffs Apple.

That’s scandalous.

The fanboys on here don’t like it when you say it (and trust me, I used to be one) but the fact is that since Steve died the quality of the product has died with him.

Yes, things weren’t always perfect when Steve was around, etc etc ... I know, but the one thing he (and Forstall, etc) had was perfectionism, wanting to create a product that they would be proud to buy themselves or recommend to their friends or family.

I don’t get the “premium” feel from any Apple product now. Even my Father in Law, who isn’t the most tech savvy user, feels that the quality is in major decline (he still uses and loves his 2010 Mac Pro and says it’s the best machine Apple have made, in his opinion of course).

Said it before, say it again; Cook is NOT a product guy.

Alright, so hoping you guys could give some pointers/advice here.

I've got a 10.5" Pro with a lovely white spot on the screen, unfortunately it's also out of warranty since end of November 2018. I've got a GB appointment on Tuesday regarding the issue as the support rep on the chat said its "most likely" a screen issue as it doesn't appear on screenshots. She also said that because it's out of warranty it's highly likely there'll be a charge for the repair/replacement. However said I could try to escalate it as a consumer law claim under Consumer Law Act 2015.

Does anyone have experience/advice in getting this repaired/replaced in the UK outside of warranty under consumer law?

If you bought it from Apple, they should honour the Consumer Law claim. If you bought it via a carrier or third party, you’re going to need to raise a Consumer Law claim with them. That’s what a senior advisor at Apple told me when my iPhone 7, bought from O2, came down with a bout of unrepairable Audio IC failure.

The 10.5 inch iPad Pro 2017 was the first time they used promotion 120 HZ...I just wonder if that first gen technology in combination with the WiFi chip heating up degraded the screen. I’m sure Apple knew about this issue and fixed it in the latest pro models but’s it really horrible they allowed this to continue and never fixed this issue on those devices. When I had my few iPad Pro 10.5s, the issue came regardless. I recommend those who want to buy the iPad Pro 10.5 to purchase the new iPad Air 10.5.......

Dude. The spot isn’t noticeable, I didn’t even notice it until I read a post about it here and I saw it. I have it but it’s only noticeable against a white backdrop, like this page and I have to be looking for it. If there is content where the spot is, it is hard to tell there is a spot.

It’s not a big deal, I don’t care for it, I don’t notice it. It will be interesting to see if the infirior iPad Air has it.

So there’s zero reduction in touch sensitivity in the area where the spot appears?

there's no reduction in sensitivity. just annoying. I don't know about you, but when I read websites etc, my eye naturally goes to the top of the page. so I actually don't notice this. when it's not on white backgrounds, you can't see it.

The white spot is incredibly noticeable on the iPad Pros I've seen, which has been every single iPad Pro 10.5 on display in Target and Best Buy. I'd never buy one of these knowing Apple has done nothing to rectify the problem, and for that reason alone, it is easily the inferior iPad.

It is incredibly noticeable on white backgrounds but is imperceptible on color backgrounds.

Depending on a person's primary use for the iPad, this could be an absolute deal breaker (such as for people who take notes) or a complete non-issue.

The white spot doesn't impede my daily usage but just knowing that it is there and seeing it when I do have a primarily white background is frustrating. I hope Apple fixes it but I'm not going to spend $500+ to fix a minor-to-me gripe.

Yea bought from Apple, so let's hope the genius won't have an issue with it, if they try getting me to pay the £416 out of warranty, I'm just better off paying £449 for a refurbished iPad Pro or the Air with my edu discount . Its crazy how everyone at Apple is saying this is the first time they've seen it when there's clearly an epidemic of these, oh well. Anywho, will drop in w/ an update on Tuesday.

Any small electronic device costing $500+ should NOT have ANY defect. What is happening too often with Apple products is people starting to accept defects.

Exactly! And should there be which is always a possibility, the company should have the balls and responsibility to admit their mistakes and provide the necessary repairs and follow up

I have said plenty of times if you buy the 2017 iPad pro models the white spot will eventually come....No matter what ....

Just try your iPad pro 2017 on full brightness or close to full brightness 4 to 6 months later and you will find it.

"Will"? Not necessarily. I've had mine for 16 months, use it (a lot) daily at full brightness, and my 10.5 does not have it.

Yeah, there must be pressure from beneath that this does not fix, just relieves it temporarily by pulling the screen away.

That’s what I thought too.
[doublepost=1553427846][/doublepost]Same result by gently “massaging” the spot with something like the Apple Pencil. It was only a temporary relief.

Does your screen brightness setting affect on developing white spots? When I received my secondhand IPP 10.5 it had small white spot (not very bright one) near home button, but my eyes are very light sensitive so I use very low brightness setting and it seems to disappeard allmost completely. I don’t noticed it anymore...
