I got one from bestbuy recently as well. What’s your build date? The later builds, late 2018-early 2019 seem bright spot free so far according to couple of people who bought one.
So the one i got that you quoted was made in Aug 2018. However i returned it due to the panel having uneven lighting and discoloration near the bottom (held in portrait).
I just got another today. the screen looks fine. Production date is November 2018. I think I'll keep this one and just add apple care for safety.
I think it's sad that we have to now do that. When i got my first ipad, the mini 2, i didn't even think of getting apple care because i figured it would just work. And it has for the most part. Inconsistent mute switch at times but that's about it!
[doublepost=1554103737][/doublepost]
I just wonder how truly widespread it is. I bought one for my wife and mom during black friday sales back in 2017. They haven't said anything (doesn't mean it doesn't exist). I will check both ipads and update this post. I will say though that i have used my wife's 10.5 from time to time and didn't notice anything. At the same time i wasn't really looking for anything either.

So the update is my wife's ipad has not exhibited this issue as of yet (purchased in Nov 2017). Haven't checked my mom's yet.

One possible hypothesis for the spot on the old Pro was the location of the wifi radio chip (I think?) and this getting hot caused the defect. It's not in the same place on the new Air.

In my ipad pro 10.5, the small brighter spot is actually bottom left corner, so no wifi module there

How did you "test" it? Just open a new note and check background?

Where is the SoC in relation to this? I thought it was close by too.

My latest 10.5 Pro is now developing this fault (I had my previous one replaced under AC+ for the fault about 8 months ago)... I have 3 months of AC+ left. Has anyone managed to get a total refund on their device for repeated same issues, perhaps quoting Consumer Law in the UK?

I just thought I’d post a comparison image using photographs from the iFixit teardown and one from earlier on in this thread.

The most commonly affected area of the display does appear to line up with the four connectors and these are covered by a metal plate.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Pro+10.5-Inch+Teardown/92534

I’m currently considering purchasing an Air 3 and have been waiting for iFixit’s teardown, due shortly, to see if Apple has made any alterations which might address this issue.

The Mini 5 has three connectors and I would expect the Air 3 to have the same. Presumably, the fourth connector is for ProMotion.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Mini+5+Teardown/121589

Looking at the teardown of the Mini 5 and the Pro 11, it’s noticeable that the plates covering the connectors are no longer bare metal and I’m assuming the new ones conduct less heat? If this is a fix, then you would imagine it would have been fitted to later versions of the Pro 10.5.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Pro+11-Inch+Teardown/115457

The wireless module is just above the connectors and these have also been updated, but there’s no information available on whether these use less power and are likely to run cooler.

Well despite the bright spot issue, I've decided on a 10.5 Pro. It all came down to the Pro-Motion and I just couldn't get past it when playing with the Air in store. Everyone is different of course, but for me that Pro-Motion was something I wasn't going to compromise on. I did play around with an 11 inch Pro for a couple of days and while the A12X is indeed a beast, the A10X would more than suit my own needs.

My situation was I had $466 of Apple Gift cards due to trade ins; while the Air and the 10.5 Pro were more than reasonable in terms of paying the difference, paying $400 for the 11 Pro was something I simply didn't want to do. Furthermore, I asked my local Apple store if they had any stock left of the 10.5 Pro and sure enough they did and when I asked for the 10% off price-matching through Best Buy's deal, they brought it down to $494. I'll end up paying about $64 out of pocket vs the $400 which my wallet likes a lot lol.

No bright spot issue out of the box and everything works perfectly so far. Here's hoping I have one that doesn't have the issue anytime down the road; but I'm very happy with this purchase. If I had sprung for the 11 inch, I would have just been kicking myself over and over for spending that $400 I didn't need to (it certainly helps that my wife won't kill me either :) ). I should also note I already had a smart keyboard and first gen Apple Pencil which I bought a while ago but could not return so I can also use that already with this as opposed to having to shell out money again for the 2nd gen pencil.

It's kind of like a lottery. As a general rule, people purchase tickets because they only see the winner with his/her gazillion bucks. They don't see the very many millions who get absolutely zip. Similarly, these forums tend to attract the few people with problems. The people who don't have a problem, the vast majority of purchasers, in fact, are hardly likely to wake up one day and say, "Hey, you know what Alice, first thing today, I'm going to head on over to the MacRumors forum to tell all those good people how happy I am with my iPad".

Congrats on the purchase! You'll love your iPad. If the white spot issue is a major concern to you and you think it will affect your happiness with the device in the future, get AppleCare ASAP. If it's something you think you can live with, then go forth and be happy with your device!

It would be interesting to know the manufacture date of your device! Can you tell us? You can check on a site like this one: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

Oh this one was a replacement but was dated quite close to launch. I had a release day one that developed the fault mid last year, it got replaced with one that was quite new date-wise, but that had dark corners so got replaced with this one.

My refurb purchased last month was a July 2018 model. Hmm... It seems that could be at the cusp as most of the reports of problems with posted manufacturing dates were dated earlier. Mind you, that might just be because the later manufactured ones haven’t been out long enough.

Mine was manufactured in December 2018.

So I was looking into getting a 10.5 inch Pro now that its been discontinued and cheaper to buy (I've also had great luck with buying refurbished items before) but now with this bright spot issue, it has given me great pause. I wanted to add that my daughter and I were in Best Buy today looking at the iPad display models and sure enough, the 10.5 Pro had the white spot. Clear as day. Of course you have to have a white background to see it but I was looking through the pre-loaded iMessages and you just can't miss it. I'm sure the display model has been up there for quite some time, nevertheless, it really sucks that this issue could still be prevalent even with the newest batches. It might come down to the Air or the 11 inch Pro for me.
It would be interesting to run the serial number through that website to find out the manufacturing date of the display unit.

Thanks. I’m glad you found it interesting.

iFixit has just released the teardown of the Air 3 and there are a few changes compared to the Pro 10.5.

In terms of similarities, the Air 3 uses the same basic layout as the Pro 10.5. There are four connectors to attach the display to the logic board, unlike the three used in the Mini 5, and the connectors are still covered by a bare metal shield. The new wireless module is located in the same position as the old one, just above the connectors.

As far as changes are concerned, the material used on the back of the lcd panel, above the display connectors, is now different from that used to cover the rest of the logic board. The material looks like it's the same as that used on the underside of the shielding. I'm speculating that this material is more heat resistant -

The shield covering the wireless module appears to be separate from the rest of the logic board -

I can't see any reason why these changes couldn't have been incorporated into later versions of the Pro 10.5, but we don't know whether they have.

1) It has to be something and your suggestion makes perfect sense to me. In actual fact, I'd put money on it.

2) My surmise is that such a fix would be extremely difficult and expensive once production has been set up and thus unlikely. I also think Apple will simply continue to keep quiet about the defect (yes, of course they have been fully apprised of the situation) and pay out what they have to which given the obliviousness and the inertia of many people might well much less than we imagine.
