37. With that said, I work on an office-supplied Windows desktop with full keyboard and MX Ergo trackball. That's why I qualified my statement with home use. My personal laptop was primarily used for consumption same as the iPad is doing now—reading comics and ebooks, web browsing on the couch or bed, watching Crunchyroll and Netflix, etc.

I do still have desktops and laptops at home for file management and backup, DeDRMing ebook purchases, ripping Blu-rays, jailbreaking Kindles, telecommuting, and the occasional website or software that won't work on iOS. I just don't need to do those things all that often.
ok, I understand. For your use case an iPad is definitely a great device. I work a lot from home. Sometimes I use my devices for consumption and then suddenly I may receive a request to support one of my customers. I just use the same device to do that and I don't need to switch between my devices. A Mac is better suited for my kind of work.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I also just bought an M1 MBA 8/512 back in December and the ThinkPad X1 Nano and E15 back in March. I simply have no need for yet another new laptop right now, Mac or otherwise. 😅

I cancelled mine too!
I'm thinking to do the same. I currently have a 10.5 with the white spot issue and my main uses are Netflix, Disney Plus, comics, and Spotify.
I think I got a little caught up in the hype, I can definitely afford it but it's purely a luxury purchase for me 😅
Sensible hat on, there's a few other things that warrant £1200: upgrading my PC, putting that money towards laser eye surgery, new lens for my Fuji camera...
Might be worth just listing things that you want to spend money on, either now or in the near future, and prioritising items within that list before cancelling.

This is why I skipped upgrading in 2018/2020 (other priorities). Now the iPad is #1 on the list. Actually, I already upgraded the desktop, laptop and phone so I think it may be the only thing left on the list at this point until it's safe to travel again. :D

hahah. I really think that the iPad is a great device, but it is impossible to just use this one exclusively. There are situation where a computer, a real, traditional computer is required. I have a recent example that shows that for many legacy scenarios the iPad is just not capable. I had an MRI scan recently and the lab gave me a CD with the results. I wanted to open the files on the CD to see my scan results. How would I do such a thing with an iPad? Impossible. I understand that this is not something that happens often, but for me at least, when I use a computer I need to have the feeling that my computer can do almost anything. With the iPad I just feel limited in ways I shouldn't have to be, not for this kind of money that the iPad costs. The iPad is a complimentary device and as such it works great. I cannot imagine my life with no macOS computers in my house.

I canceled after I picked up the IPad Pro 12.9 2020 128gb version for $730 ($100 off promo plus 5% discover cash back)

The M1 IPad 2021 is great but not that much of a difference. I’ll save the chunk of money. It’s probably going to take 2-3 years for the new IPADOS using M chips to be worth it.
Was this at Costco?

I pre-ordered my M1 12.9 from Costco. The 2020 model is about $250 less, but to me the mini-led and 2gb of ram and future proofing of the M1 make it reasonable. Also, costco has a very good return policy. Apple care is almost unnecessary.

I was in the same boat a week ago, but I figured it'd take years for iPadOS to make the M1 worth it.

So instead of spending 1600 on fat iPad Pro that's held back by its OS I spent 650 on an LTE / 128 GB 11" iPP 2020 and the rest on crytpo.

What sort of tasks do you with your iPad? I’m considering canceling my Costco M1 12.9” order and going with a comparable 2020 because for my lighter usage, I wonder if the M1 will make a future-proofing difference. I do like it’s possibilities but am not sure that I want to gamble $250 on that.

The mini-LED, though, is intriguing. I do enjoy the best display that I can afford, but will the mini-LED make a difference only on video? That’s the lingering question for me.

My 55” television is my primary device for video consumption. The $250 difference (2020 12.9” vs 2021) could buy an Apple TV so that I could efficiently cast from an Apple device, something that Roku at present does poorly.

But if the mini-LED can improve the already excellent iPad screen, I’m inclined to go through with the order, and the M1 will be nice to have.

May I ask how old you are? I don't mean it in any way disrespectful, I am just curious if age plays a role here. I am 48, I grew up with computers, and I cannot imagine just using an iPad all day for my computing needs. I like iPads, but in my mind they are consumption devices. My problem is that the touch interface can never be as precise as a mouse and keyboard.
I’m in my 50s, started computing on the display model TRS-80 Model III at the local Radio Shack on Saturday afternoons, and I think the iPad is the best computing device ever made. It feels like “the future”.

It is my most used computing device and I have a 2017 15” MBP, and a 2020 iMac with 64GB RAM. I don’t have pokey computers. The clamshell form factor to me is super clunky compared to my iPad when lounging throughout the house, surfing the web, paying bills / doing home finance, watching videos, etc.

I use the larger computers basically for anything the iPad just cannot do. Converting audio files, USB device I/O, Arduino programming, raspberry Pi stuff, 3D printing stuff, and some other audio stuff. For now, all of these things require more than iPadOS delivers.

It feels like the future but it is definitely not the present. Only partially. There are just some basic things an iPad cannot do and this can be frustrating.

Personally I've grown into the same tendencies. I used to heavily refer laptops and full-fledged "desktop" OSes, but after almost a decade with a hybrid device running a desktop Windows OS I'm ready to simplify and merge into something more seamless and complementary with the rest of my personal tech ecosystem, almost all of which is Apple.

As someone who left the dark side some decades ago, what is the difference in a Windows desktop OS vs a Windows laptop OS?

I decided last night to cancel my original iPad Pro XDR pre-order and go with something potentially far more logical — and powerful — for similar funds (approx. $70 more, all things [cheaper AppleCare/keyboard] considered).
Good for you, we all need to personally vet out what works best for us, and our budget. Just because you can buy it, doesn't mean you should. I'm sure it was a hard decision to cancel the order, especially given how far out the shipping estimates are now running.

What works for me, may not work for you, and other tools may very well be a better fit

Buuuuuut… both my work and personal laptops don’t have a CD slot… Somewhere, I have an external cd drive but haven’t used that in well over 5 years. If a DOCTOR handed me a CD… I would hand it back and tell them to send me an email or Dropbox etc etc. At very least, they could give you a thumbdrive. And I live in a small rural town. I would literally laugh. Jeez, ive jokingly asked older employees “what is a thumbdrive” when they tell me they bought one :)

I recently had a retired man hand me a CD with some interesting training and videos to watch. I googled the title on the CD and it was available on YouTube. I’m not joking… if someone hands me a CD, I don’t use it or I laugh…

I saw this coming, all the cancellations :) I may have been one of them it hadn't been for the fact I missed the launch due to being too busy. I still want to replace my current 11" as it has a cracked screen but I will wait for the refurb store starting to stock all the returned in 14 days items.

Easy to say but very difficult to get a thumb drive from a doctor here in Germany. I have an Apple DVD drive and I had to find it first since it was buried somewhere in the basement. :) At least I was able to read the CD and copy its contents. A doctor here in Germany would never use a public cloud service to make data available to patients. Sad but true..

My health provider would have those online.

That said, I rip Blu-rays on the desktop so I do have a 4K UHD Blu-ray capable drive there (via USB3-SATA adapter since I've been using NUCs). The old Windows 7 ThinkPad E540 has a DVD drive which I've been thinking to replace with 2.5" SSD tray. The work desktop has a DVD drive, too. It even has a floppy drive albeit that's never been used. :p

None that I've noticed.

Yeah, I don't think I'll go iPad-only anytime soon (if ever).

However, my personal use is 90-95% consumption, 5-10% other and that's reflected in how often I use my devices: 90-95% iPad, 5-10% desktop/laptop.

Besides, I'm upgrading from a 2017 model that's served me well for 4 years. If I use the 2021 for just as long, cost over time is $500/year or $1.37/day. Given how much utility I get from iPads, I definitely think it's worth $1.37/day to me.

Canceled mine and waiting for any announcement of the 14 inch MacBook Pro, which would be a better purchase and experience for my personal needs. iPad 2021 would be nice, but unless WWDC is a winner for us then it’s a no go for me.

I went from a 2018 12.9" iPad Pro to the M1 MBA 16GB/1TB. I was really tempted by the M1 11inch 1TB iPad Pro, and would've gone down that route if it wasn't for the terrible multi tasking in iPad OS. It's just not there for me yet as a main device. I'm now thinking about adding a 2020 11inch 128GB iPad Pro to use as a digital art pad.

lol hopefully not doge, since it just tanked 30% after the Musk SNL episode.

And why would a doctor’s office spend $20 for a thumb drive to give you when a $0.25 DVD gets the job done for 80 times less expense?

I was speaking in terms of full Windows vs. Windows RT/Windows on ARM. Sorry to be confusing.

Another option would be to choose the 2021 11” as a compromise. This would be $50 less than the 2020 12.9”, and you would still get the M1, more ram, better camera.

I’m sure mini-LED will look remarkable, but if your usage doesn’t benefit from it, maybe it’s not necessary. On the other hand, if mini-LED improves the quality even for non-video/photo uses, that would be enticing to me.
