Yeah that’s a good point. I think the reality for a lot of 2018/2020 iPad Pro users is there was such a leap forward with those models in CPU/GPU performance, design with FaceID, Apple Pencil 2, Magic Keyboard that it’s made for a tough decision to upgrade to the 2021 iPad Pro. That’s what it came down to for me. I decided to replace my Mac instead. I ultimately landed on the MacBook Air and the crazy thing is you get an amazing laptop, with M1, 16GB of RAM for sub $1200.I've been wrestling, probably like many others, about the comparative price and performance of the 2021 iPP Pro with (for me my ordered and outfitted with 16GB iPP) and a MacBook.
Added to this price consideration is the my need for a new MK. I just don't think I'll be happy with an ill fitting 2018 MK vs. the 2021 MK. I'm wondering if I'd be better off investing the cost of the 2021 MK into a MacBook (using the funds to upgrade RAM/SSD) and keep my 2018 iPP for the goodness that tables offer?
In the last six months I had a 12" MacBook die on me. While it was a slow-poke, I did like the overall ergonomics of it vs. my 2018 iPP with the MK.
Yes, yes, I know the 2021 iPP has the new screen, and a 5G cellular modem. But so much depends on whether Apple's iOS/developers's apps. really take advantage of the M1 and 16GB.
I think I need to go to the local Apple Store and check out the newest MacBooks as my finger hovers over the iPP cancel order button.
As someone who left the dark side some decades ago, what is the difference in a Windows desktop OS vs a Windows laptop OS?
I can't see the value right now, but it's no doubt a capable device. I just need see more from iPadOS to justify upgrading my 2018 11 inch Pro. It's my daily driver and hasn't given me an issue with work since it came out. I am still tempted to upgrade, but want to wait to see what happens at WWDC.
Just do it if it pleases you and you have the spare money.I can't see the value right now, but it's no doubt a capable device. Why on earth would you want to upgrade? The need to upgrade every generation needs to die. There is not such thing (in 99% of cases) that anyone would need to upgrade.
Enjoy your device and upgrade when its time, not when new "shiny thing" is out.
The more people take this approach the more we will be better as a society.
Apart from the fact that the post doesn’t indicate yearly updates it’s perfectly fine to do whatever the heck we want with our money.
We’ll be a better society if you learn to focus on yourself rather than eyeing the purchases of others in order to get fake outraged over strangers’ buying patterns.
I agree. I'd just personally rather spend money on something that brings a tangible difference.Just do it if it pleases you and you have the spare money.
Life is short. Always enjoy what you want.
I agree and my mindset has certainly changed the last few years. I tended to always upgrade, but it just feels so meaningless nowadays with no tangible difference from device to device. Of course, everyone's usage and needs are different, so it's certainly not a blanket statement. Just a personal one.Why on earth would you want to upgrade? Originally I had decided on the 12.9" iPad Pro 256GB w/ Cellular (in Silver, with coordinating White Magic Keyboard) for just slightly north of my $2,000 budget upon adding AppleCare and applying account credit. After further careful consideration:
I'm the weirdo who
I decided last night to cancel my original iPad Pro XDR pre-order and go with something potentially far more logical — and powerful — for similar funds (approx. $70 more, all things [cheaper AppleCare/keyboard] considered).
- doesn't "consume" much tele-visual media [movies, shows]
- doesn't work in a demandingly creative field or do a lot of digital art
- prefers to reduce his cellular usage/bill where possible
- doesn't gravitate toward the largest of displays anyway for the sake of portability and simplicity [still using my trusty 10.6" display-equipped 256GB/8GB Surface Pro 2 from 2013]
- clearly needs his investment to last as long as possible
Enter iPad Pro 11", 1TB, Wi-Fi (in Space Gray with Black Magic Keyboard).
I know I said I'm not the most power-hungry user but as a tech nerd I can and certainly do appreciate:
Heck, if 16GB of RAM can virtually eliminate the chances of a Safari tab or entire application having to reload as well as help ensure the device's longevity as iPadOS and future software grow potentially more resource-greedy, then I'm all for it).
- sheer power and capability especially where it may extend the potential lifespan of my investment and
- improve general, day-to-day quality of life within the confines of Apple's walled garden OS
The earlier slated date of arrival (May 24-Jun 1, as opposed to the XDR's Jun 2-Jun 9), to be fully honest, helped assuage any lingering fears I may have made the wrong decision.
Postscript/edit: I just checked the receipts to be sure and the price increase was actually more like $32 for 4x the storage and 2x the RAM—not too shabby. Sorry I wasn’t more accurate in my original post.
I upgraded from a Surface Go to a Surface Go 2 for half an inch of screen real estate and possibly a little spec bump. I’ve had 9.7, 10.5, and 2018 iPP 11, Mini 4 and Mini 5. Plan to get 2021 iPP 11 and probably a new Mini when the next generation is released.I agree and my mindset has certainly changed the last few years. I'm in the exact same position! The 9.7 is still working fine, although the battery's hurting a tish and I'm looking forward to the new screen. I ended up going for the 256GB - the 128GB on my 9.7 hadn't been an issue aside from some of my apps auto offloading whenever I download some videos.Keeping my 12.9 cellular model on order. Same, I wanna finally upgrade from iPad Air 2! Performance and Battery-life is literally non existent! Have it since 01/2015!I’ve got an air 2 since it’s launch already. So I’m really looking forward to my 12.9 iPP.
I think it’s really situation dependent. If you have an iPP2020, why on earth upgrade?
If you have an iPad Air 2? Man, it’s gonna be an insane upgrade!
It’s nobody else’s business what someone sets as priorities for their spending.
They shouldn’t do either. The US healthcare system is a mess, but they don’t hand out CDs with your info on it. They have software that shares this info electronically and if that doesn’t work, snail-mail printed info or just have them hand you a paper copy. And those are small doctors offices. This isn’t a big ask. It’s 2021 and healthcare isn’t cheap. And why would a doctor’s office spend $20 for a thumb drive to give you when a $0.25 DVD gets the job done for 80 times less expense?

I am running a 10-year-old Windows workstation that’s been upgraded with RAM and a couple of SSDs but I overbought processor when I bought and the two 24” screens running in portrait mode are doing just dandy. I drive a 17-year-old car, buy clothes at thrift stores or other relatively inexpensive places. Don’t have cable, biggest TV is 32” flat screen several years old.
Don’t spend money on travel or fancy meals or fancy food.
Portable computing devices are my main “vice”. I’m pretty frugal about just about everything else.

I wasn’t SUGGESTING doctors SHOULD use thumb drives. I was suggesting they SHOULDNT use CDs.
On a completely different level -
Thumb drives don’t cost $20. That’s a joke. Buy in bulk (like an office would) maybe a dollar. Maybe!
Plus… an alchohol swab doesn’t cost $40, but in the US, that’s what your bill could say if you don’t have insurance.
