agree in the store it felt heavy but for some reason at home it does not feel that bad actually...

Right, it should be good for home office use.

Definitely not a machine for any thing resembling portability. This generation 16" seems to be exclusively designed to be a desktop replacement; kind of like iMac Lite.

I know you weren't replying to me, but I do have both. The 16" definitely feels a lot larger in terms of space, but when I actually compare the two side by side its not a massive difference in terms of what is actually shown on the screen. For videos and images, though, much different story.
yeah I am seeing about 1/4 to almost 30% difference on screen...

I know you have all these specs here which is great! but do you actually own both the 14 and 16? I have both and tell significant difference with the 16 in terms of space on screen etc... no question...

I rotate between an old personal 13.3" at home (2011) and a 16" work one. The 13.3" is more cramped but haven't worked on it much lately so hard to compare. 14" would be a bit bigger also.

When I went to the store to decide on the size the day after launch day, I was carrying my usual case with my 2018 15inch (I carry my 12", 13" M1 Pro, or my 15" on various days). That 16 is literally feels heavier than my entire bag with the 15", charger, phone, mouse, a couple of accessories, some papers, and a bunch of random stuff combined.

There is no way anyone who needs to carry it daily can reasonable use the 16". Sooner or later, he/she would regret it and have to go back to something more portable.

I agree 14” FTW

Two questions you need to ask yourself before you decide.
  1. How are your eyes? Think about that when you looking at the 14" vs the 16" with smaller print and screen real estate.
  2. Is it mostly for home or travel? Think about that if you have to travel with it daily. Easy question to answer really. If you need portability, you already know the answer.

Ya oddly I'd say that 15" would be the perfect size for a balance of home+portable for me haha. 14" is good for all portable though.

I bought the 16" as a replacement for my MacBook Pro 2017 13". Sure, it takes up more space on the table and is heavier than my 13", but I barely notice the weight difference when I have it in my shoulder bag. I compared it to my 13" work laptop today. They are almost the same size. Compared to my old MacBook, the screen is MUCH larger, and I can look at the screen at a much more comfortable angle when working without an external display. The bigger screen also makes a huge difference for my productivity. I am very pleased with the size I chose.

I use clamshell mode all the time, it works great. I do have the keyboard with Touch ID which I would highly suggest, it's a major convenience.
Exactly like you. I have started with the 14'' and tried 16'', a better battery life and audio, so I returned 14 and keep the 16, the difference in term of money it is so little (less than 200 euros).

I'm on 16MBP + 11'' iPad Pro
That's a valid combo too (only combo I'd argue is too redundant is 14" MBP + 12.9" iPad), I just think it leaves a hole in the real sweet spot of portability vs. screen size at the 13-14" mark.

13-14" is the 'goldilocks' screen size to me, but I do love the 11" iPP (more compact, lighter weight) and the 16" MBP (massive screen).

14" owner here. I also own a 15.4" MacBook Pro. How does the 16" M1 pro feel compared to the 2019 15.4"? Can anyone who has or has had a 2019 15.4" tie me some insight? Thanks in advance. Just curious if I should eventually try to sell my 15.4" 2019 to get a 16" M1 Pro or not. My 2019 has has a keyboard and battery replacement so its sitting at 8 cycles right now and its an I9 so I doubt I would get anything close to what I paid for it.

If you don’t need portability, you shouldn’t be buying a laptop to begin with.

Verge posted a informative review today

They tested 3 configurations for this presentation.
14" M Pro (10C/16C) 32 GB RAM
16" M Pro (10C/16C) 32 GB RAM
16" M Max (10C/32C) 64 GB RAM

I'd argue that there is "home portability". Where the laptop is 95% at home, but you want to rotate a machine between the couch while watching TV and a desk, kitchen table, outdoor patio, etc, but the weight doesn't matter that much. Not everyone wants to spend $5000-6000 to have 2 Apple machines. (this is my scenario).

Testing out the performance of the new M1 Max MacBook Pro 14" and 16", performing 4 different sustained tests. They were actually close at the end of testing not like the 14" was thermally worse than the 16" when long term tests were ran.

The 14" did heat up faster than the 16", also the smaller fans on the 14" spin faster, more audible comparably as observed.

Should reassure people trying to pick one over the other on how the M Max thermals compare when pushed.

Just walked into my local Apple store to check out both sizes. Walked out with the 16”. Decision was quick and easy for me - I want the screen real estate and all the other benefits of the 16”. I have a 12.9” iPad Pro when I need to be portable. Easy decision for me personally. Frankly, it weighs exactly what I expect a laptop of that screen size and power to weigh.

I would like to see the 14 inch next to the 12.9 iPad.

The 14 inch is far, far better.

The 16 inch weighed like a bucket of bricks in store; I swear it's heavier than the old 17" from 2009.

It's just a completely infeasible solution if you need to carry it daily.
As you can see on the screenshot, the 17" is nearly two pounds heavier than the M1Pro 16". In fact, the current 16" has virtually the same dimensions of one of the 15" models of the past. I've been using the 13" M1 air for nearly a year. I get why people are digging the 14". I never upgraded to an Intel 16" or 15" because I enjoyed using my 17" for years. I traveled with it frequently. I NEVER saw the point of the 13" laptops. Mixer, Audio waveforms, one or two plugins... cramped but doable on a 17"; impossible on a 13". It finally showed signs of its second demise last summer. NO WAY was I going to replace it with an Intel space heater; ESPECIALLY with Apple's commitment to processors evolved from their mobile devices. I was happy to jump on the M1 Air. No Noise!! As a musician, that is a dream come true! But two t-bolt ports and 13" doesn't cut it. The M1's are now in the hands of my Wife and Daughter. I am thrilled to be getting nearly the same screen real estate! (A bit smaller, and two pounds lighter!!)The performance, lack of noise and heat. The M1 already handles the ProTools sessions I throw at it! But the ports, battery life, ... Couldn't be happier! Another benefit: apparently, Monterey has enhanced the "side-car" function! Perfect with my 11" M1 iPad Pro! Yes, the 16" is bigger. EXACTLY!!! That's what I've been waiting for!

I will send pics of the 16" along with my old (now bricked) 17" when it arrives. Can't wait!! It just arrived in Kentucky tonite...

It’s a good reminder the 16 requires much more for charging needs. I have more than a few that will do 96w. Even docks. But 140? Nope.

Isn’t the 140 only for fast charging???
96w is the normal charge for the 16.

140w chargers will come soon enough though. They are that brand new 3.1 version.
