I would like to see the 14 inch next to the 12.9 iPad.
For context, here are a few photos of 14" and 12.9" M1 Pro. Exactly the same screen height, but 14" is about 1" wider than iPad.

Just walked into my local Apple store to check out both sizes. Walked out with the 16”. Decision was quick and easy for me - I want the screen real estate and all the other benefits of the 16”. I have a 12.9” iPad Pro when I need to be portable. Easy decision for me personally. Frankly, it weighs exactly what I expect a laptop of that screen size and power to weigh.
Yup, just came outta Apple myself, and it was a no brainer.....16" hands down winner. All you wimps with the "oh it's too heavy" malarkey, need to get in the friggin' gym. I held each size in one hand and could barely tell the difference in weight! And that screen.....Oh my days! That thing is a work art! I seriously braced myself when I went to pick up the 16", expecting it to feel like the old 17" that was a monolith.....my first thought was "what the hell are those guys talking about?" and it was an instant decision. 14" if you're travelling on planes and stuff and you wanna work while you travel, but for anything else, just pull out a 11 or 12.9 iPad and use that for consumption.

14" owner here. I also own a 15.4" MacBook Pro. How does the 16" M1 pro feel compared to the 2019 15.4"? Can anyone who has or has had a 2019 15.4" tie me some insight? Thanks in advance. Just curious if I should eventually try to sell my 15.4" 2019 to get a 16" M1 Pro or not. My 2019 has has a keyboard and battery replacement so its sitting at 8 cycles right now and its an I9 so I doubt I would get anything close to what I paid for it.

I came from 2019 15.4" to 2021 16" M1 Pro.

The screen total size is quite similar, but the quality difference is night & day! Not to mention the amazing performance and the awesome battery life, it was a no-brainer for me.

Yes, I lost about a grand but it's not a huge deal.

agree 100%. I literally cannot believe that this 16 is this good.

So I pre-ordered the 16" MBP with M1 Max, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD and have been a little bit nervous about the size because I carry around my laptop on a daily basis for work.

Because of this, I ordered the 14" MBP with M1 Max, 64 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD (this is what Apple Stores stocked for upgraded specs) from the Apple Store this morning.

I love the bigger screen on the 16" but my main concern is carrying it around daily, and I like the specs on the 14" but my main concern is working with the screen size.

I guess I am going to take advantage of Apple's return policy and use both to see what I prefer.

First world problems.....lol
Ok, so I had a chance to see them both at the apple store today and here's my conclusion. I traded in my 16"
i9 2tb and I feel the 14" is nice, but if I were doing photoshop and video editing/graphics I would recommend the 16. If you can't deal with a 4 1/2 pound weight, get the 14, bit I enjoy a larger screen for everything from editing to even surfing the web. Right now Im sitting on the couch and to me, its great. Im a 230lb male and don't see the weight difference between this unit and the 2019. Battery life is great, I haven't heard the fan and Ive been restoring from TM backup using a Thunderbay raid system. Not hearing all that noise is a godsend. I noticed the notch during the first 10 minutes but in full screen mode is disappears and now even in regular mode I don't notice it. If youre anal about notches then don't get the new MacBook or just stop being anal, its just a computer. If you want something super thin and light get an Air or 13" pro. I got the M1 Max 32gb 1tb and its great, I really wish it was 2tb but oh well.

the resolution between the 14 and 16 intel have similar resolution. Do you guys see the exact same amount of stuff between the two? I have 20/20 vision so I dont mind slightly smaller letters as long as they are sharp.

do you also see more on the new 16 vs 16 intel because of more resolution?

its really hard to make these comparisons in store.

So you are buying a portable device (MacBook), but have an iPad Pro for when you need to be portable? It's seems you don't need a laptop to begin with.

Ehh, I tend to disagree. Depends on how much you are using your devices and what your financial situation is. But, I consider my MacBook as a desktop replacement, which is why I opted for the 16. If you plan on having a monitor, and or just want a portable device I’d probably get just the 14.

As you can see on the screenshot, the 17" is nearly two pounds heavier than the M1Pro 16". In fact, the current 16" has virtually the same dimensions of one of the 15" models of the past. I've been using the 13" M1 air for nearly a year. I get why people are digging the 14". I never upgraded to an Intel 16" or 15" because I enjoyed using my 17" for years. I traveled with it frequently. I NEVER saw the point of the 13" laptops. Mixer, Audio waveforms, one or two plugins... cramped but doable on a 17"; impossible on a 13". It finally showed signs of its second demise last summer. NO WAY was I going to replace it with an Intel space heater; ESPECIALLY with Apple's commitment to processors evolved from their mobile devices. I was happy to jump on the M1 Air. No Noise!! As a musician, that is a dream come true! But two t-bolt ports and 13" doesn't cut it. The M1's are now in the hands of my Wife and Daughter. I am thrilled to be getting nearly the same screen real estate! (A bit smaller, and two pounds lighter!!)The performance, lack of noise and heat. The M1 already handles the ProTools sessions I throw at it! But the ports, battery life, ... Couldn't be happier! Another benefit: apparently, Monterey has enhanced the "side-car" function! Perfect with my 11" M1 iPad Pro! Yes, the 16" is bigger. EXACTLY!!! That's what I've been waiting for!

I will send pics of the 16" along with my old (now bricked) 17" when it arrives. Can't wait!! It just arrived in Kentucky tonite...
I would never allow myself to do this. You're spending close to $2k with tax more than an Air costs simply to get a bigger screen, even though the M1 Air does everything you need it to do. This is exactly why Apple will NEVER produce a 15" Air model.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? He stated the M1 Air does everything he needs. He bought the Pro basically for a larger display. A $2k outlay for a larger display. A Lamborghini is "way more powerful" than a Toyota Corolla as well, but if you never go past 35 mph...who cares?

My point was that Apple clearly isn't interested in making a larger display on a lower model, and this is exactly why. They extract $1,500-2,000 extra from people by forcing them into a Pro when they don't need it. Why would they offer a 15" Air for a lower price?

I went with the 14 inch. I never even gave the 16 inch consideration since I knew going in that it was going to be more expensive than I could justify spending and it would have more power than I need as well. Bigger screen and better battery life would be nice, but I rarely take the laptop out of the apartment and if I want more screen real estate, I have a 25 inch monitor on my desk that is more than sufficient.

I agonized over the 14 and 16 for the last four days. I bought them both to try out and went back and forth. For me, I ended up pulling the trigger on the 16.

I don't think the weight is really that big of a deal. I'm surprised so many are acting like it's a behemoth. Heavier than the 14? Sure. But we're still talking 1.5 pounds. Biggest adjustment is the physical footprint. The 14 is a great machine. But I wanted the bigger screen and battery. I can move about the house. On the occasions I do have to travel, it's still a portable machine. And I have a 12.9 iPad Pro.

If you do travel often or are a student who brings their laptops to class, I do think the 14 is a better use case. But for me, my home machine that provides some portability with that screen and battery life, the 16 is an easy choice.

You make some great points - there are a couple use cases like airplanes that are really well suited to the 14”...and as you said, the 16“ screen is a sight to behold in person.

If you're carrying around to do work daily. You've made the right choice with the 14, since you sound like you're a freelancer. But if you're someone using a Mac in a corporate environment, go with the 16 for that "workstation experience" it's fantastic. Some people like it. I know I do.

Also you get used to the weight. They aren't light but a 2016 15 inch touch bar model is significantly heavier than the new models.

I'm loving my 16".

I passed on the 16 because my wrists were pressed against the front edge which is sharp. It gives me a lot of discomfort. I have medium sized hands but I suppose if I had freakishly longer fingers, it wouldn't be an issue. The thickness of the 16 creates this weird angle where no matter how parallel your wrists and elbows are to the table, your wrists will press against that edge. Maybe this was also an issue for prior 15/16 models.

Not sure you’re in a position to judge what I “need” for a computer. Newsflash - lots of people buy a powerful laptop as their primary computer, even if they don’t need a portable device.

If (lack) of fan noise is important, I'd go for the 16". I had the 16" for a few days and never heard them once, although if I really put my head against the chassis I think I heard them once. Have just done my first Handbrake encode on the 14" this morning and they've come on almost immediately and are very audible - i.e. Intel MacBook levels.

Worth clarifying that the chassis doesn't seem to get hot like the Intel Macs do. I seem to remember the 16" did get slightly warm, so is it possible that part of the cooling approach on the larger machine is to make less use of fans and more use of the chassis to dissipate heat?
