Just opened up the 16" max model - wow this is even heavier than in store.

With it on my lap at the moment the footprint doesn't feel too bad, but wow is this thing heavy.

Definitely feeling that I way overbought with 32gb and 24core gpu max option.

I bought this sleeve for the 16" and have carried it around on its own to meetings (esp since w/ battery you don't need charger everywhere, and with HDMI port you don't need to bring dongle). Also I've tucked the sleeve w/ MBP easily into the Patagonia Mini MLC. Traveling with 16" has been business as usual :)

Hi, thinking of getting the Comfyable sleeve (£20) over the Harber London (£90). Do you think it’s okay for the money?

Quick question - does anyone else have wobble when typing on 14" on their lap? With my 2020 16" it was big enough to prevent wobbling while I type. However, on the 14" I need to raise my wrists off the laptop in order to type without moving the screen a lot. Curious what others have experienced here.

Man it’s like some never owned big laptops. I remember that 17” xps dell I lugged around. There was even a world of Warcraft version. You’d see these on stargate connected to alien tech. Lol. I figure welp if it works for SG1…

I suppose it’s perspective but the 16 is like a thin and light one for me.

Yes - I recently pulled my 2003 vintage 12" PowerBook out of storage and it's almost as heavy as the 16" M1 Pro!

BUT - after years of Jony Ive's 15" Retina thin design, a heavier laptop feels like a step backwards in terms of portability.

At the end of the day, threads like this are pointless but fun debate. The decision is very much a personal one - what is right for some, will be wrong for others. I do miss my 16" screen, but I don't miss its heft. The 14" display is about right for my usage, but it might not be right for someone else who needs more space or bigger type.

I'm currently using a Dell latitude 15", this laptop is bigger than the 16" while having a comparable weight
I've traveled with this laptop without any problem, and I don't find it hard to carry or work on the couch with
So for me, it's a no brainer: 16", especially when considering the very small price bump between the 14" 10/16 and the base 16"

I chose Comfyable because something I can throw around , provides thick padding, water protection. It's clean and also has part that protects zipper from hitting laptop. Very happy with it so far. Previously had 16" leather sleeve from Apple that I didn't think did much but looked nice - until it got pretty beat up.

Coming from an Intel 16 inch to a 14 inch, I feel the screen needs sometime to get used to.

The usable area is just not enough with the default resolution, I have to scale it up, then the text becomes quite small, though I think I will get used to it

Many express concern over the size of the 16” M1. I had a 17” for years. Never a problem. But the new 16” has virtually the same dimensions as the 15”. Before I sent it back, I took a few pics of them both. Not only smaller, it’s more than a pound lighter than the 17”. BTW, the replacement shipped and is scheduled to arrive Dec 6.

That is a behemoth. Is that a DVD drive? ?

I've been using a 2019 intel 16" laptop at home and it's fairly different to me.

It was. I swapped it out for a 1tb 3G SSD with data doubler from OWC. I also installed a 1tb SSD system drive. Other than the heat and fan noise, it was great actually. The heat eventually fried the graphics. Apple replaced at no cost to me, as part of a class action suit. It lasted til summer 2020, when the graphics died again.

Everyone’s perspective is different. I always thought the 13” was so tiny. Using the M1 Air for a year has gotten me somewhat used to the smaller screen. I considered the 14”, but to get nearly the same screen size as the 17”, in a smaller, lighter laptop, PLUS a more robust heat sink and ventilation system and I jumped on the 16”.

Does anyone have a link to the post that shows the battery life comparisons of the different permutations of the 14"/16" and the M1 Pro/Max?

I swear it was in this forum somewhere but forgot to bookmark it!

It'll take me a bit to find it, but here is the result: The 16" M1Pro has the best battery life. Second place is the m1 Air. Last place is the 14" M1Max.

I'd much rather get 14" but the thermals comparison from MaxTech video is really worrisome for me. It looked like same load and 16" ran 20 degrees cooler

Priorities for me in this order:

1-Lack of fan noise. Silence is golden!!
2-Thermals. effective heat management preserves the life/performance of the computer!
3-Battery life. The ability to record on location, no matter where!!!
4-Screen real estate. Coupled with SideCar and my 11" iPad Pro...??
5-Ease of portability. I previously used a 17" MacBook Pro. THIS one is almost 2lbs lighter, and the same size as previous 15" MacBooks Pro.

I didn't include processing power because an M1 Mini is much more powerful than my last system. Obviously the M1Pro processor far exceeds the demands of my workflow: Pro Tools recording, mixing, editing, mastering. DaVinci Resolve Studio 17: 1, 2, or 3 cam music videos, events, etc.. I am not doing 8k, or even 4k. Now, I usually use my video equipment set at 720p. I've used 1080p, but the vast majority of what I've done has been 720p. It looks great! 720p seems to be the best compromise for me in terms of quality, memory storage, and ease of editing.

No-brainer for me. 16" M1Pro. 10-cpu, 16-gpu. 32gb RAM. 2tb internal SSD.

After following this thread for a while I'd like to express my opinion on this matter.

3 years ago I purchased a 15.4 i7 MBP from eBay and added 2 years Applecare on it.

Just before Applecare expired I did a big repair, replacing keyboard, screen and speakers/battery.

After 2 months the left cpu fan started making random weird noises. As the laptop was on it's 4th repair Apple offered me a replacement, the 16" M1 Pro 1TB which i accepted.

I've now had the laptop for over over week and since I couldn't really decide I also purchased the 14" M1 Pro.

I do not like the extra weight and thickness of the 16" whatsoever. It is considerably bigger and the old 15.4" screen was more than enough for me.
On the other hand I found the 14" a huge downgrade coming from the 15.4". I also noticed that the 14" would get considerably warm on the palm rest when doing something demanding or even charging the battery. The palm rests on the 16" are much cooler and I like the big size where i can rest my hands.

After going back and forth I returned the 14" back to Apple. I am still not happy with the 16" but I would get that over the 14"

For me the best laptop would be a thinner 15"/16". I do not need the full performance of the M1 Pro but I need large screen and a thin laptop with good enough battery life.
I do believe that the next generation MBP will be thinner but god knows when it will happen.
I wish Apple would produce a large screen version of the MBA. This would probably be the perfect laptop for me.

I also have the 11" iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboardf and I was thinking that the 13"/14" are just too close size wise.
Already leaning towards the 16"(I already have the 2019 16" MBP)

DaVinci Resolve Studio 17: 1, 2, or 3 cam music videos, events, etc.. I am not doing 8k, or even 4k. Now, I usually use my video equipment set at 720p. I think the M1 Max only makes sense for people who make money editing videos. For hobbyists, surely we can wait a little longer for exports. It's not as if video editing slows to crawl when having the M1 Pro instead of the M1 Max.

A 16" M1 MBA would sell like hotcakes. Too bad Apple will never do it since it will cannibalize their Macbook Pro sales.
