I have owned dozens of iPhones over the years, never once have I used an Apple case on any of them.
No one in my immediate family ever wants one either.. (Caudabe has gotten most my money over the years)

The kids always want cases that stand out / get attention (Casetify usually) so they are definitely not an Apple case target market in my house.

Reports from the Verge and Nilay Patel (The Verge) with a couple of redditor comments. Somehow I can't seem to trust them that much - Yes it's scuffable and so was leather, so are the silicone cases, it's a fabric case and it will show wear - buy another of the thousands of other manufacturer cases there are out there if you don't like it!!

Yes it's expensive but it's apple! Remember the cost of the cleaning cloth?!?
leather is self-healing scratches, this isn't. ie this is gonna look like **** within a month and stays looking like ****.

That's the reason why leather is such a good product for protecting phones or other stuff. That's the worst part Apple acting like we just use leather for fun when in actuality it is used because it's genuinely a very good material for a phone case if not the best.

And yes tanning leather is a very bad thing for the environment but Apple was already working with ECCO which is one of the forefront runners in eco- 'less unfriendly' tanning + leather itself is for the vast majority a byproduct of 'making' meat. This finewoven stuff also isn't carbon neutral, they just say that it has lower emissions than leather. Funny thing is that the new sport loops actually are carbon neutral (and given the reviews the better material for watch bands).

I really can't see this being anything other than virtue signalling without making an actual change to mother nature.

In Apple marketing pictures, sure.

In real world pictures, it looks hideous:

This picture with scratches does not look hideous.

I really liked my Apple leather case and whilst leather production isn’t great for the environment it’s a functionally better material to protect a phone.
It looks like some companies are trying to improve that too. Fossil (sorry watch snobs) now sells its watches with something called LiteHide bands, which is leather that uses less salt in production.

Of course, the greenest product is one that is not being produced. Repeating myself, but it's a shame that cases can rarely be used across iDevice generations anymore because they keep adding and removing millimeters here and there.

The Verge is terrible. Most everything they write is clickbait. Nobody is forced to buy Apple‘s cases. I haven’t owned an Apple case in years. There are plenty of good 3rd party options out there. And if these cases don’t sell then Apple will be forced to come up with something better.

I like the material tbh. The MagSafe wallet feels almost like a pantyhose, but I think that it is a cool feeling and look they are going for. Some people say it’s not like suede but I disagree, it’s not the same exact feeling but not unlike it either. Almost looks like leather in certain lighting too (I got the Taupe).

I wonder how many people have an iPhone 15 in the case currently complaining about it since it’s Thursday?Maybe we shouldn’t be scratching our leather OR FineWocen cases with fingernails to prove a point because they’ll both look bad. Also, why on earth did y’all think they would change the price lmao. I imagine that their profit margin is higher than it used to be with leather. We’ll see what they do next year but don’t see them discontinuing this.

I can’t imagine spending $60 on a case anyway, but I’m a cheap bugger. I can see how those used to leather would be put off by the lower quality at a similar price.

What’s wrong with leather anyway?! It’s a byproduct of the tonnes of beef we all eat. I’d rather leather continue to be made than it go to waste… we’re still eating beef and the cattle are dying in any case. Bring back leather!
Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry. Hopefully a third party can use the leather from my burger cow.
Some cows are produced solely for their leather. Also, the major part of leather being produced is used to subsidize meat production.

Apple somehow forgot that leather is a sustainable, renewable, biodegradable durable natural product that's been approved by all societies for thousands of years.
If they are concerned about humanly ending the life of farm animals there are people like minded that quietly farm and harvest this way and waste nothing as God intended not in a violent wasteful death as is the norm for industrial & government farming.

The Verge’s review of this case is the top story on their website right now. But it’s got almost 300 comments so I guess mission accomplished for Nilay Patel. Anything to get traffic.

I've been using Apple Leather cases for my last two iPhones (7 plus and 11 pro), and I've been very happy with those, so when I ordered the 15 pro I naturally ordered the leather case "replacement", ie. the FineWoven case.

If it's as bad as the first impressions indicate I'm probably in the marked for another case pretty soon... ;)

Anyone knows of any good Apple-like leather cases? :)
