The company(s) that Apple was getting the leather from to make the products, I am sure they aren't going to close down. They will sell it to other companies and / or find other uses for it..

I've been using Apple Leather cases for my last two iPhones (7 plus and 11 pro), and I've been very happy with those, so when I ordered the 15 pro I naturally ordered the leather case "replacement", ie. the FineWoven case.

If it's as bad as the first impressions indicate I'm probably in the marked for another case pretty soon... ;)

Anyone knows of any good Apple-like leather cases? :)

I don't know...

I don't really like the look of this one:

Edit: Nor this one:

Another way to frame this is that missteps like this can and do happen when a company is sincerely committed to its environmental targets
How can you believe something like this with how long they refused to put usb-c in their devices and forced people to buy bricks because they don't come in the fancy over constructed box that people usually toss. This is strictly about money but since marketing can't say that they use buzz words to make the consumer feel like they are doing something good while paying the same price for an inferior product.

Except in this case it’s pretty clear someone was intentionally scratching it with their finger.

The Verge’s review of this case is the top story on their website right now. But it’s got almost 300 comments so I guess mission accomplished for Nilay Patel. Anything to get traffic.

I understand the agenda you see here.

I guess we'll see how this story progresses. Either this disappears over the weekend as people start using their cases on their new phones, or it intensifies.

USB-C is terrible example.

The EU mandate on USB-C cables has nothing to do with the environment.

People already have BILLIONS of functioning lightning cables and accessories in use, so forcing them to change this isn't an environmental deed, but rather quite the opposite.

The fact Apple delayed this transition for so long gave consumers time to adjust their purchasing decisions to reflect to coming reality.

That's certainly how it has played in our household - we've only bought new lightning cables where we absolutely need to, but with USB-C cables you can buy a 2 or 3 pack because you know you'll need them in the future.

What’s wrong with leather anyway?! It’s a byproduct of the tonnes of beef we all eat. I’d rather leather continue to be made than it go to waste… we’re still eating beef and the cattle are dying in any case. Bring back leather!
Nothing wrong with leather since it's durable and biodegradable. And at least until a few years back there was a glut of skins from beef production. That said, from an environmental standpoint it's not as simple as leather being a byproduct. Tanning alone can produce a greater amount of greenhouse gases than recycled synthetic materials and the process also results in large amounts of wastewater polluted by chemicals that affect water supplies and agriculture. Of course, if the replacement material is subpar in durability compared to leather it's going to have the opposite effect since that would create more waste in the long run.

I know this thought will get drowned out amongst the other conversations going on, but I'm actually very curious about how this twill holds up when introduced to natural oils from peoples skin.

Leather only 'self heals' when it's soaked up the skins oils and can be rubbed out. Maybe this material is just more like a waxed jacket and needs a bit of treatment to hold up better?

You make good points, but every year apple delayed was another year thousands of (now pointless) lightning cables sold. A quick google search tells me apples makes 5 billion a year on lightning cables and mfi certificates.

I do not have a car, but if I had one, I would try to get rid of the logo. At least if it is one of those cars that other need for bragging.

I do not know what a GAP is, but if I buy sportswear, I try to get rid of the logos. Sadly Nike made their shows in a way that they might fall apart, if you just cut the logos off. So your best option is to go for shoes where the logo at least has the same colour as the shoes. I like my Nike shoes, but I do not want to be associated with that brand, as it is often worn by criminals.
And criminals never ever ever use AirTags.

Got my FineWoven delivered a couple of days ago and opened it just to check it out before the new phone arrived. Really cheap feeling and so I sent back for a refund. Just popped into the Apple Store in the city where I live and some of the Apple employees were looking at the cases and making whispered comments about the poor quality. Back to silicone it is for me.

I use and will keep using leather goods but this could have been a good product, Apple just fumbled it.

There are plenty of synthetic materials with a quality feel and longevity.

One exemple is what is known in car seats as Alcantara.
