Regarding Apple paying for Product Placement:

I think the majority of the time, nothing at all. Most of the people making Movies and TV shows use them anyway.

If you look closely, you will see MacBook Pros or PowerBooks in many many shows, and they put an aluminium coloured sticker over the top of the logo, because it *isn't* product placement. It's just what they want to use.
(emphasis added)
this doesn't necessarily apply to apple products. if you are making a film or tv show and you are dressing a set in a certain way to place people or places in a context, there is often no alternative to apple products if the context is well designed etc.
(emphasis added)

You are severely underestimating the level of corporate power and the control companies have (and pay for) over what we see. Product placement is as big of a business as ads on webpages or commercials. And companies pay a lot for their images or names to be dropped in your favorite shows and movies. If there is a sticker over the label, then that is a different situation (likely where no one paid, so they just used what they had, but covered up the label because they don't want to provide free advertising). Don't be blinded by fanboy love for the way Apple products look, because the network producing the show won't give away free advertising no matter how pretty the product is. Companies even pay to have certain images/styles promoted. What consumers are told to think is "cool" or "unique" is really brand marketing and cattle. Just my two cents.

I am working with a couple product placement companies right now, and according to those sources everyone pays. Unless its a very low budget production or a pilot, even the largest brands pay to have get their product on a show. Now, sometimes that payment can be something as simple as a free product but those cost money too, and if its any major show its going to cost actual money beyond that.

...This is coming from someone with contact to the business. He has it right when he says "everyone pays." Welcome to corporate America.

T-Pain and Patrick Stump, on Apple website.

EDIT: Also saw a Mac Pro on first episode of Chuck, and there's a MBP or iMac every 2 seconds on the Celebrity Apprentice.

More Celebrity Apprentice photos. Good publicity for Apple considering how "business" related Celebrity Apprentice is.
