Then again it could just be new screens sizes and support for hdr and Dolby and it’s just a bad software bug somewhere in the display driver etc. so every one that got a phone on launch has until the 4th to decide to return or not sad par is if I return I already sold my older phones I’d have to get a new 8 plus lmao but st least it be watchable on videos if not I guess can swap out 3 times then fall under the no lemon law and be entitled to a full refund any wayIt`s not confined to HDR content only, it is visible on all 24fps content
The phone does use PWM to lower brightness, and it could be that with auto on its more aggressive and makes matters worse with 24p contentI’m on beta 2. It seems slightly better to me. I note just overriding Autobrightness to max levels seems to stop the stutter for me. Which continues to make me wonder if the phone is doing some sort of PWM or other technique to display 24hz content and its flawed or off just enough that many of us are noticing the stutter.
True but not everyone had the charging bug either or reception problems they said 12.1 beta 2 fixed the charging problem so it could still be software related but we all have until the 4th to return if u got it on launch day then that’s 14 days to return u less of course u get 3 swaps which then the lemon law will apply and they have to give u a full refundThe phone does use PWM to lower brightness, and it could be that with auto on its more aggressive and makes matters worse with 24p content
It can’t be a software thing as everyone with a max would see it, unless some can’t spot it but it’s unlikely surely?
Problem is we don’t know how widespread it is. If it’s a small number then swapping out at Apple then you’ve a good chance of a no stutter phone. However if it’s widespread as some of the evidence suggests then if we swap out we have a good chance of just getting another stuttery phone!!

Can you link the youtube-movie you had problem with? I think standard youtube is 30fps. 60fps are marked as 60fps.
- Hidden figures 1080p 24fps - stutter (SW-decoder).
It’s not hardware.Actually my phones performance is better when wi-fi is on.. This is really starting to be frustrating. Starting to think this is a hardware issue...
Like I just said earlier, with auto brightness on I can watch that snow scene sometimes it’s fine, others it’s awful. I can watch a movie and everything great then BAM the stutter begins out of nowhere. Must be conflicting with some process or other. With auto off I get no issue on any contentOther than Lost in Space, what other video in Netflix is a good test for this issue? My Max seems to be fine after the latest Netflix update. Not seeing stuttering during that snow scene. Not sure if that’s really the case.
Even with auto brightness off my phone is just slow all around.. Could be the beta 2 but still. Even when there’s no bad stuttering the performance all around is not smooth.Like I just said earlier, with auto brightness on I can watch that snow scene sometimes it’s fine, others it’s awful. I’m actually rocking my Xs max with auto off now and brightness about 35%, seems to make hdr look better somehow and saves me some battery life. A little dim outside but I can always adjust it without going full blown max brightness which auto does and wastes battery
You must have a dud phone as I’m on 12.1 too and general performance is fineEven with auto brightness off my phone is just slow all around.. Could be the beta 2 but still. Even when there’s no bad stuttering the performance all around is not smooth.

Yeah well apple support analysed the phoned to be working 100% Maybe I’m just losing it..You must have a dud phone as I’m on 12.1 too and general performance is fine
Interesting, hadn’t thought of that! Now that makes me want to go back to autoPretty sure turning off auto brightness disabled HDR, or at the very least disables the phone’s ability to selectively brighten and darken parts of the panel individually (as well as globally). If you play HDR content with auto brightness off it is rendered differently than with it on (highlights are often much brighter, shadows without as much detail).
Yeah turning off auto brightness doesn’t turn off HDR.. You can clearly see when the screen enables HDRInteresting, hadn’t thought of that! Now that makes me want to go back to auto
However, I’m not sure that’s right. Surely the auto brightness feature is just globally altering pixel brightness according to data from the light sensor. With that feature off, why would that prevent the video player software from controlling individual areas of brightness within scenes?
For example my hdr tv has a ambient light sensor that can adjust brightness. I turn that off but it doesn’t prevent hdr from local dimming etc
Agreed. I just compared scenes with on and off and there was no difference in highlights or shadow detailYeah turning off auto brightness doesn’t turn off HDR.. You can clearly see when the screen enables HDR
This video shows the worst stutter ever on the iPhone Xs. I tried on my iPad, and no stutter. But with the iPhone Xs it’s just plain awful.
Turn on 'stats for nerds' option in YouTube app which shows this video as 24fps.
Can you link the source of the file? Or, give more details like codec h264/h265, file size, etc.? Was it originally 2160p file transcoded to 1080p?
