If all they have to do is a fix the auto brightness issue, should be an easy fix.

I watched some iTunes content st 24hz with auto brightness off, and it ran smooth.

I don’ t know if Netflix only has 24hz content, will look into it.

I don’ t even know if it will run smooth on an iPhone X or that they have the same problems. IPhone X on iOS 11 was fine, but didn’t try it on iOS 12, before I sold it.

I just watched this promo clip called „Meridian“ that Netflix did to promote all the tech standards: Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos etc. This one clearly runs at native 60 FPS. It is so smooth and moving images are sharp as hell. So everything else does not run at that same framerate then!!! That is weird. I thought with 4K also the 60 frames became standard.

What I also recognized (because I’m watching movies on an OLED iPhone for the first time) is that the regular stutter is more prominent than on a LCD. I’m not talking about the XS frame drop but the usual stutter when watching 24 FPS videos. Will I get used to that???

Netflix has some 30fps stuff too. Most series like Better call Saul etc are 30fps and I watched that with auto brightness on without an issue

Yeah, noticed that too, on YouTube . 30fps is fine, just 24hz is not.

Just took a look at Better Call Saul Season 4 Episode 1 with Auto brightness ON. Scrolled back and fourth between scenes. Felt fine until the office scene (12:30 min left) when the camera pans across the space... again stutter, makes me dizzy.

No 4K standard isn’t all 60fps, as almost all movies are 24fps and lots of tv shows are 30fps, very few things like soaps and sports are 60fps (or 50fps here in uk)

Went to apple today they want me to send in my phone for service and be with out a phone 5-7 days I was like no I said I want a working phone now not latter it was almost 2 grand phone he said it’s not a issue I said really I brought a shoe box with me I just got some new shoes in the mall apple store is in the mall I put the shoe box over display models and I was able to reproduce it on 2 xsmax and 2 xs and all same issue when not is a very bright location he said well it’s prob software nothing to worry about I said if it’s not fixed I’ll do 3 swaps or exchanges ther offered me a exchange I said can I see it first same issue I said I’ll jsut keep the one I have so if it’s not fixed I’m gonna go the route as no Lemon law cuz again after 3 exchanges during the warranty period no lemon law applies and they have to refund you or give u a step up model but there is no step up model so refund will still happen even after the 14days

YouTube app was updated.
1080p24 seems to run smoother, still has the auto brightness bug, though, but without auto brightness on, playback of 1080p24 seems nicer.

I watched from Netflix the "Test Patterns" Season 1 Episode 8, should be 3840x2160@60fps but the realtime stats that is showed in the Test Pattern clips states that the resolution is 1920x1080 and only 30.00 fps, maybe somekind of codec problem? Meridian clip (11 minutes long) is clearly 60 fps (so fluid) and looks very good (HDR works), not sure about the resolution though. Should Netflix stream over 1080p on iPhone XS Max?

OK, so my scepticism is now proven wrong. I tried disabling Auto Brightness and watching this episode clip over and over again. With Auto Brightness On and Off (True Tone makes no difference).

Lost in Space S01E06 Eulogy From Time Left: 1:01:28 to Time Left: 58:30

I am now one of the people who sees a very big difference with Auto Brightness Off. The good news is, that this meens it’s a software issue. Please everyone watch the above approximately 3 minuttes, and you’ll see a clear diffence. This scene is one big Panning scene, which is perfect for testing.

12.01 doesn’t fix it. Just tried, still slowdowns and judder with auto brightness enabled.

All I k os is in pissed almost 2 grand for a phone and now the top speaker when out a restart did fix but danm how many glitches does this **** have and if it’s all software how does it just stop out of the blue after 2 weeks no speaker problems then bam speaker problems. WTf.

I hope not but it could be that the auto brightness and the panel at 24fps is incompatible on a hardware level and can’t actually be fixed in software. I’m just surprised more people aren’t aware of it

OK I give up. This morning i tried showing others that it could be fixed by turning off auto brightness. But it made no difference. Why it did yesterday, I really don't know. It might be some sort of combination of Auto Brightness and brightness level. Either way this is still a very big issue, and I urge everyone to contact Apple and report this. You can use this URL: https://www.apple.com/feedback/ - and you sould also link to this thread so they can see the scale of the issue.

I have contacted Apple by Phone, written to many YouTubers, who I thought might dig deeper, but no answer from anyone. It's very weird that there can be so much attention on Beauty Gate (which is just dumb, and irellevant) and none regarding video playback, that looks like crap.

Why it some times works with Auto Brighness On, seems to be if brightness isen't auto adjusted during video play.

I tried covering the front brightness sensor when playing the Lost in Space Scene:
Lost in Space S01E06 Eulogy From Time Left: 1:01:28 to Time Left: 58:30

When doing this with above 60% brightness and lens covered by finger or sticker, no difference is view-able. Only the normal 24p stutter, and not the hacking and coffin else seen.

You can try playing back the scene, and the shine some light on the senser. With Auto Brightness on, you'll see stutter as soon as the screen adjust brightness.

No news from Apple or from specialized web site it is unbilievable and no changes in iOS 12.1 beta 3 :(

I really can’ t believe it either , someone really should have spotted it by now.

They can fix it, perhaps displaying it at 48/50 hz? So double the refresh rate when detecting 24hz? I don’ t see any trouble at 1080p50, this is very smooth, so...

Do you have a link to a 50 HZ Video?
