Could be, but people with regular xs are having these issues too, and that res is the same as the iPhone X from last year, so..

yeah that's true but seems to me more common on the Max and why i think it could be something with the new display res on it. I guess it could be part of the new screen on the regular Xs also. Since these screens with have to be tested for hdr and so on with the new brightness levels it offers. The new phones could just have a bad profile that was a copy/paste of the X and needs to be adjusted for the new brightness levels cpu/gpu and so on

Edit: Just thinking about it more. If it was a profile for the display we should be seeing it when downloaded. I know for me downloaded it goes away. So maybe something with the streaming info not right...or something lol. not a easy problem to solve for sure

To me, streaming or downloaded also same issue.

Hello all, new user here experiencing the same issue(s).

I am very sensitive to frame rate dips/motion blur, etc. I know a lot of people don't notice these things which is why I believe this could be a widespread issue.

I did test Netflix (Lost in Space, Ep 1, 38mins onward; and brooklyn nine nine) and noticed dips. The unfortunate thing is that I cannot reproduce these issues at the same timestamp in the video as it occurs randomly. I did download the video in Higher res and standard res in Netflix which didn't seem to make much of a difference.

From the models I've seen users post is that they have the XS Max 256GB model, as do I. Can others confirm what models they have as well?

In addition, I don't believe this has been mentioned, but using the Camera on the phone to shoot 30fps and 24fps videos; do you guys notice the same stuttering issue (especially when panning or moving the camera)? I do, and it's driving me crazy! (I believe this is the easiest way to show those who don't know what we're talking about). I still have my old iPhone 6 and these frame rates play fine. Can others test their cameras as well?

Just to add, I don't use auto brightness, and tried with auto tone on/off. I also turned on airplane mode while watching the downloaded Netflix episode. No luck!

Fingers crossed that this is a SW issue that can be corrected soon!

So odd it's not the same for all of use.

Just tested the camera.
4k24p yes i do see it.
1080p30p no i don't. The 1080p video i used lumafusion and exported it at 24p also no issues.

Now here's what odd. If take a 4k60 video it's smooth as it can be. If i use Lumafusion and export at 4k24p yes i see it.

If i watch all the videos on my iphone x everything is fine. Max not so much :\

Yes, 4k/1080 @ 60fps video recording/playback is very smooth for me as well.

I'm assuming everyone who is experiencing these issues are on the Xs Max and not Xs? Maybe higher res demands from larger screen? But then again, wouldn't that make 4k/60 choppy as well?

Question, are there any free or price-friendly video apps that let me record and export video to 1080@24p? Lumavision/Filmic a little steep right now. I'd like to test and export to my other devices to see how it plays. Thx.

I just recorded in 4K24p with no stutter. I’ve a Max.

Just did a test with the Video Camera in 4k 24/30/60. I didn't even record the video I just panned the camera here in the office. The 24K is consistently more choppy then the 30. I don't know if that's just the perceptive difference between 24 and 30 K or if I'm seeing this issue. The 60 is buttery smooth.

If I don't pan and just move forward and backwards its not that noticeable. Seems to be more obvious when panning. For those testing 4k/24fps please pan at a moderate speed to see if there is any choppiness.

Yes, the stuttering from the panning during 4k/24fps/30fps video recording is pretty bad. Made me nauseous.

I may have to return the phone until this issue is sorted out. For those who have working (non stuttering/laggy) Max's, what sizes do you have?

I don't see much or any difference but I don't have a baseline of what's considered choppy when panning in 4k.

Just tried this out with the 4k24p videos I recorded today. The screen recording does seem to help. Well for me at less. Interesting

I can confirm that my recording of 4k24fps with screen recording on seems to remove the stutter. As for Netflix, I do see improvements with screen recording on, but there was like a sec here and there where I did see stutter.

I'm curious to know if this can be corrected with a software update.

Not sure the lady at the Apple store said this and I kid u. Or she said just turn off autobrighness and the issue should be better at least it does for me that’s what she said wth u have to turn off features to make another work I think it’s all hardware issues and there not owning up to it my top speaker goes out 2-3 times a day so I think it’s defective auto brightness sensors cuz that sensor and speaker is all on same piece and people who have the stuttering also usually have the speaker issue check to see if your sound is coming out the top speaker when playing music or video a lot of people having same issues.

I have auto brightness and True Tone turned off since I got my phone. So far my speakers seem to play fine, however I will pay a little more attention to it.

Update:

Apparently I didn’t turn off the right auto-brightness setting. There is one under “magnifier” and the other under “display accommodations” (this one I had on). I will do some more testing with it off and report back.

Update 2:

So after turning off auto-brightness (Accessibility->display accommodations) the stutter is gone for watching Netflix Hi-res/HDR content and recording and playing back 4k24fps video.

With auto-brightness on, the stutter is mostly (if not completely) gone by turning on screen recording while playing or recording 4K/24fps/hdr content. Not sure if turning off auto-brightness turns off HDR as well but I couldn’t really test properly on my phone.

Is this the case for others as well?

Yeah, with me it is the same.

I’ll give apple until 12.1 final. If it is not fixed by then, I ‘ll make an appointment with the Genius Bar, and will go for a replacement unit.

I turned off the correct auto brightness and when I pan the camera at a decent speed at 4k/24 its still a bit choppy but I don't have a reference to know if that's normal or not for 24fps. Maybe someone close to an apple store can go in and test the display models to see if they behave the same way. If they are all the same there is no point in swapping out the phone. I'm not far from one but don't have the time nor do I watch many movies on my phone. I do believe this is software thought.

Won’t do any good my wife on her 3rd replacement unit same thing. Others said there on there 3rd one guy on his 5th replacement unit so if it is hardware it’s really wide spread. I’m going to get a replacement for the speaker issue this Sunday. My wife’s phone has never had the top speaker not play sound. Mine has u can hear phone calls but not music or videos it will only work from bottom speaker until u reboot phone then it will work for a day or so then go out again. Swapping units is pointless at this point and the speaker issue people have said there on there 3rd or 4th replacement as well they really need to recall these danm things almost 2 grand for a pos.

I went into my service provider store and tested a 64GB XS Max and the smaller XS, both running iOS 12.0. I experience the same stuttering issue. Note: I only tested the 4k/24fps camera. Couldn't test netflix or any HD streaming media.

I also tested an iPhone 8 plus running iOS 11, and it performed much smoother with auto-brightness on, than my MAX with auto-brightness off. I know iPhone 8/Plus uses an LCD screen vs the Max's OLED - Could that be the culprit?

I still have a few weeks until my refund/exchange window closes, but if this is the case with all XS's, I don't see a point with exchanging it right now. I will wait a bit, I am hoping this is a software issue.

I've already tried one exchange with no luck. My return window ends Sunday, so I'll be returning my Max until this issue is resolved.

The X is OLED and doesn't have this issue I understand?

I hear this a lot. People getting an exchange that has the same problems.
I have to think that it is very widespread then. BUT why is there nothing on this issue on YouTube of tech review sites. Why?
1. Is auto brightness off out of the box?
2. Are youtubers and tech sites even using the iPhone Xs (max)?
3. Did they notice, report it to apple , and decided to keep it under wraps till 12.1? (Unlikely)
4. Since all review sites have the gold one, are only the gold ones ok(different production line)?

It really puzzles me.

I have the XS Max too.. it seems to stutter with all HDR or Dolby Vision content. I’ve reported the issue and checked threads online and I can report back that this is definitely not a contained issue that affects a small number of handsets. It’s a wide spread issue that’s visible on every device. 5 of my work colleagues have this phone. I checked Netflix: The Haunting of Hill house on each device and all showed the same stuttering. It seems to be related to hardware limitations. Possibly down to power delivery to the display or video encoding restriction.

1. I think auto brightness is on auto of box. I was turning off the one in “Magnifier” instead of “Display accomodations” until I realized that wasn’t the right auto brightness. Lol.

2. That was my next suggestion. To contact these reviewers regarding the issue. I don’t remember (based on the reviews I’ve watched) them mentioning any stuttering issues.

3. Could be the case, unless like you said, they aren’t using the phone or just don’t play/record 4K/hdr content? Or have auto brightness off before testing? Who knows.

4. I tested the gold (64GB) max in store yesterday, same issues. So far there are issues on the 64/256gb models, any experience with 512gb models?

I have XS Max 512, same issues. All 24fps content stutters like crazy. Even just previewing the video in the camera app does it. You don't even have to be recording.

My old X didn't show any of these issues ever.

It does seem like a hardware limitation based on the stuttering - like playing a game that your computer can’t handle. For me, auto brightness off seems to resolve the issue, but when I tested the iPhone 8 Plus, it was performing better even with auto brightness on.
