So I just won on Ebay 128GB(8 x 16GB) Samsung M393B2G70QH0-YK0 PC3L-12800R 2RX4 DDR3, I paid £109 with postage. How much of the RAM can I use with my standard 2.26 CPU's until I upgrade to X5690 / X5680?

Dual E5520?

Firmware and BootROM update to latest should be able to use all. Stick with limited to get to that point. Dedicated threads on that. Been awhile since I’ve been on a machine with those processors.

Hi All, just an update my RAM just showed up (Samsung M393B2G70QH0-YK0 PC3L-12800R) and all 128gb is working in my Mac Pro first time, it currently shows as 1066 but I know thats due to still using Dual E5520s, I will upgrade the CPUs next

i have :

M393B1K70CH0-YH9 : Samsung 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R-09-10-E1-D2

and

M393B4G70DM0-YH9 : Samsung SAMSUNG 32GB DDR3L-1333/PC3L-10600R 1.35V DIMM

which one can work for Mcp 4,1 > 5,1 with and x5690 single ?

I'm using HP Samsung M393B2G70QH0-YH9Q8 96GB (6x16GB) 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R ECC REG, HP Server Memory from eBay. Works great in Mid 2010 MP. Shows as 1066mhz with dual 2.4ghz processors. After 3.46ghz 12 core upgrade it shows as 1333mhz. *ebay listing for memory says "server use only"

If you bought 6x32gb hcdimm you would be running at 1333MT
8x32gb hcdimm would drop you down to 1066MT because of the 4th memory channel being shared.
Just not sure which Mac OS will read all that ram.

People need to start buying HyperCloud DIMM's to avoid the speed penalty with the older tech ram like udimm , rdimm, and lrdimm.

Long time reader first time poster. Firstly thank you to everyone who has contributed info over the years. I now have a monster of a machine that i certainly did not think would be within my budget for several more years.

I have recently upgraded my RAM. I thought i'd share the source for others. All the RAM has tested fine using memtest. The price was great but the shipping took forever.

Pro tip: :) Make sure you pick the express post option if you can. I waited 8 weeks for economy from China to Australia.

Hi at all!

Could get my hands on

Hynx HMT42GR7MFR4A-H9 16GB

planning to use 8 of those sticks in my dual X5675 mp5.1 - can anyone confirm that this RAM will work?

thank you!

while researching RAM's which could fit i noticed that some stick's are physically "higher" than others.

for instance this stick from micron which should also work in the mp 5.1 i guess:

MT36KSF2G72PZ-1G4D1HF

is this just because due "older" production technology? - overall height adapted to the larger ICs used to build the RAM?

maybe someone who knows is willing to share.

EDIT:

MT36KSF2G72PZ-1G4D1HF

can confirm now that this RAM works in the 5.1

Hello Everyone,

Well, I'm not sure if I'm in the adequate thread but I think it fits (I read it all).

I just updated a cMP 5,1 dual processor to two X5690 6-core.

Just to put some context : I work in sound studios for cinema, we're using Pro Tools software on macOS (as at least 90% of professionals in sound for cinema). Just before summer, we had a big project in our mixing auditorium, where our cMP (the dual processor) was under pressure. Hundreds of tracks, plugins everywhere, lot of delay compensation, etc...

It was dual 6-core @2,66GHz and 32GB RAM (4*8GB). Still capable of running the mixing session, but sluggish... Slow reactivity when hitting play, zooming-unzomming in the session, editing clips, etc...
CPU was constantly used around 70 %.

So my main goal is to get the best out of this cMP, hence the CPU upgrade to the biggest possible (X5690).
I earned some reactivity with the X5690 (didn’t save some %CPU, always around 70 %).

As I had a second machine opened, I put 32GB more RAM, so 8*8GB.

Here is the odd thing : With 64GB RAM (all 8 slots full) the session couldn’t even play. Pro Tools CPU bump at 100 % and error message.

So I thought about stuff I read some times ago about triple channel RAM and a little downspeed while all RAM slots are used…
So I tried with 48GB RAM (6*8GB) : Magic *o*
Pro Tools loaded faster, big reactivity gain in the session, 55/60 % CPU usage so I saved some CPU usage too.

So here are my questions : I thought the difference between triple channel ram configuration and full slots usage were « tiny » differences. And furthermore, just a RAM speed difference.
In fact, it does affect CPU usage too ? Or is it just because CPU and RAM are really pieces of gear working together and one affect the other ? I don’t have enough low level knowledge in is this.

Anyway, the difference between 4, 6 slots and all 8 slots usage was massive.
4 : I can work, but still some sluggishness.
8 : I can not work at all. Just simply impossible, can even play at all.
6 : I can work and it’s quite smooth !

What do you think guys ?
I know probably none of you are working in sound, but would you have guessed it make such a big difference ? Do you find this « normal » ?

I’m curious to hear your thougth.

Here are the some details about the components :

cMP 5,1 (mid-2012), dual processor tray, dual X5690 6-core (@3,46GHz).
OSX 10.12.6 Sierra on 256GB SSD
BootROM MP51.007F.B03
Media on other SSD/HDD/Servers
PCIe slot 1 : ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024Mo
PCIe slot 2 : AVID HDX Card #1
PCIe slot 3 : AVID HDX Card #2
PCIe slot 4 : Sonnet 4*USB3 ports card

RAM : Till then it was 4*8GB Samsung DDR3 1333 MHz EEC REG 2xR4 10600R
The 32GB I added (then removed 16), are the same kind, samsung too, and were in used in an another cMP 5,1 dual 6-core for Pro Tools too.

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking about increasing the RAM of my Mac Pro 4.1> 5.1 W3680 3.33 Ghz.

Currently I have 16 gb and I would like to put a total of 48 gb with 3 bar of 16 gb.

I spotted three offers, I would like your opinion:

Samsung PC3L 10600R (I will try to get more information on this one)
Samsung PC3L 10600R

NANYA (this brand and known in RAM?) 16gb 2Rx4 PC3L 10600R
NANYA PC3L 10600R

MICRON 16GB PC3L 10600R MT36KSF2G72PZ-1G4E1HF
MICRON PC3L 10600R

I have doubts with the L PC3L and the R 10600R (but I think if I put three bars that should not be a problem).

Thank you

PC3L is fine, they all run at 1.5V on cMP.

10600R is also good. cMP can use RDIMM.

I am using Micron DIMM now, running nice and cool. I haven’t check your link yet, but as long as they are 2Rx4, then it’s good.

I sent a message to the seller on the first link to have the exact reference because the photo is too small, I would say it is a 2Rx4 but I expect to have confirmation.

Samsung PC3L 10600R (I will try to get more information on this one)
Samsung PC3L 10600R
That's a very interesting link @marioliv66@ ! As I'm in France (so is the vendor too), if you could keep us updated about the exact reference to confirm it should work, I'll make a try on this ones.

I furthermore confirm RDIMM works like a charm (I have 8Gb Samsung 10600R PC3), an indeed the cMP can't boot with UDIMM an RDIMM mixed.

BTW, still no thougth about my earlier post about the big CPU difference between 6/8 RAM slots and 8/8 ? :)
