Surely the redesign of the power adapter is to address the hundreds of reported cases where either the MagSafe connector, or the sleeving just prior to it, has either melted or caught alight.

If it was hundreds, there would be a recall for fire safety. I believe there were only three to five reported cases, and we heard every one.

Of course, your view does kind of beg the question why people would follow rumor sites at all-- if you're not filtering the information you find here and using it to inform some sort of decision making, your time is just as well spent train spotting...

I wasn't really criticizing people being excited about a new smaller magsafe power adapter. My point is that although I understand most people wanting the latest and greatest, it is impossible to obtain and I certainly wouldn't delay my purchase of a new MBP waiting for a smaller magsafe (rumor or reality). If I needed the computer I would purchase rather than wait . There will always be something better (supposedly) the next minute. To be honest, the reason I started reading the threads was to gather as much insight and information about macs as I could while I was waiting for my new mac to come (my first mac, BTW). From this forum, I have garnered some very useful information that I had trouble locating. There have been some really helpful post and people out there that will make the transition easier.

I'm pretty sure mine is that small. It's from a MacBook, but in the UK.

For people who order power adapters, did the original fail or did you just purchase an extra one? Does AppleCare warranty the power adapter also if it fails?

sometimes you just need a travel one, one for your office, and some need one for home. why? so you are not always carrying it somewhere. easier to just unplug and go than cord wrangling

Pretty cool stuff. I've got to say, it always kind of surprises me that Apple doesn't get more praise for their power adapters. Apple just seems to be light years ahead of the competition when it comes to power adapters; my Sony Vaio came with a fairly bulky power adapter with big thick cords (with some velcro strips to tie them up) and it was always a tangled mess and a pain in the ass to carry around. It's like, hey, great Sony, you make a really slick thin 3.7 pounds SZ laptop, but you have this ugly unwieldy brick to go along with it.

By comparison, I just love how the MB and MBP power adapters are so compact, have the prongs built into the brick itself, and have fold-out wings to wrap the comparitively thin cable around.

It seems like such a small thing, but when you do think of it as an important part of what you carry with you when you have a laptop, it really amazes me that other companies don't seem to try and follow Apple on this front.

Maybe my example isn't common, but my five year old Compaq business notebook had a power adapter that was a bit under half the weight and size of the old MBP power adapter. I had later bought a Compaq branded adapter that was a third the size of the MBP power adapter. The notebook isn't an ultralight or ultraportable, it used a standard 1.2GHz PIIIm CPU.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagSafe

"Apple has not licensed third-party products using MagSafe, however many manufacturers have devised a workaround: their MagSafe items use the actual connector from Apple's AC adapter, grafted on to their own product. Since this uses an actual Apple product, purchased legally, no licensing agreements are violated."

I wonder if that's why Apple chose to make the cable fixed to the brick, so that other companies can't just buy the cable and adapt to it.

I liked the bigger brick because it showed this "Intel chips are lower power" rubbish for what it is...

The official reason was not about lower power but more "performance per watt", which is exactly the phrase Mr Jobs used in pitching the Intel transition. Remember, for notebooks, we got a dual core machine that was faster per core than the G4. The mini doubled its core count as well, For the iMacs, we got machines that were as powerful but ran cooler and quieter. The Xserve had their core count doubled on the high end, quadrupled on the low end, the dual core G5s were too hot to put two of them in a 1U case. The Mac Pros are about as powerful as the G5 Quad it replaced, but it ran much quieter and can hold double the drives.

That's exactly what happened to my adapter, Geez~, what garbage~

BTW: the cord should definitely be softer for wrapping up.

On my Magsafe cable, the springs behind the pins got brittle and broke, so it wouldn't charge very well because there was not a good power contact. The Apple Genius said that it happens. Apparently it didn't happen enough for the store to justify keeping a couple in stock all the time, but he's replaced several.

Well said. If you don't need the MBP right now and can wait till October, that would be a good plan. If you need a new notebook, then get it now :)

I think for most people, waiting is the way to go. Most people seem to have some form of computer these days. Most people don't need a new computer *right now*, unless it is broken, lost or stolen, they can get buy with their existing computer for a month or two. If there's a reasonable expectation that there will be an update soon, then waiting a while isn't a bad idea.

Can't wait for these to be released in the UK, can finally use it on a virgin train without having to press my leg against it to keep it it because the brick is rubbing against the skirting board

You could just use a standard figure-8 cable as an extension and put the brick wherever you want!

why would anyone ever get worked up about a power supply? It sits under the desk and you don't see it. If someone has a spare $79 to spend on another power supply because the old one is too big, how about gritting your teeth and giving it to charity?

On another note, being as the MBP uses this magsafe and apple hasn't licensed it to anyone, does apple make a car/caravan adapter/inverter for the MBP?

Ta!

Welly

Most people who buy laptops carry them around to work/school/etc and don't leave them sitting at a desk the whole time. Therefore, they have to carry the power adapter with them and the smaller the adapter is, the better.

Yes, or...they could want to have 1 at home and another at work/school, so they don't need to transport it always. But, when they do travel, the smaller one would be useful.

I wanted a second adapter for exactly this reason -- 1 at home that runs back behind my desk, and a second that I keep in my bag. That avoids having to crawl under the desk every time I take my MBP out.

I went to the Apple store on Tuesday to buy a second adapter. They had none in stock -- my good luck. I purchased one on the web on Thursday, and it is one of the new style. My confirmation email says it will ship by Aug 16:

Ships by: Aug 16

So I am about to sell my 2.2 LED MBP assuming something new will be out for back to school, Im selling it for what I paid and I wont need a comp for the next few weeks, any one think there will be anything new in August?

I really don't think so, the MBP is the newest model in Apple's line-up. The only thing I can think of is maybe if the MacBook gets an update and you want to trade down a bit, then you'll have less money tied up in your computer. Otherwise, I just don't see your idea worth pursuing right now.

That's by design. The power adapter will turn itself off if it detects abnormal power conditions. Congratulations, you have bad power in your house. :D

Are you serious?

Does Apple really need to come up with this kinda futile smart-ass design? I mean, even if I had bad power in my house, why would they care notifying me with it anyway?

Or are you just making it up? No offence:p

YAY! My MBP #2 came today and when I opened it the internal shipping case looked weird and I was like o_O literally. BUT! Much to my liking the new power adapter is the mini version. So cute. I could just hug it. Oops, I did.

Some of those images are just rehashed over a bunch of sites. I also doubt this is a widespread issue. If it were, Apple would do a recall for sure. The price of a recall would be FAR less than the price of several houses burned down and/or people getting killed.

When they shipped it?

Those links were just ones that I found after a minute of Goolgling. Dig and bit deeper and you'll find many more.
Speak to anyone technical working for either an Apple reseller, or a resident Genius at an Apple store, and you'd be in for a rude awakening. Just because Apple doesn't do a product recall doesn't mean it's not an issue. Do you really believe that they've redesigned a power adapter in the middle of a product's lifecycle just to make it smaller?

Hey, nice. If you don't mind me asking, when did you order it and when was it shipped? Just trying to figure out the likelihood my new MBP will have it.
