Thanks for pointing this out - so my next question is why flash the 680 at all if it will always work in OSX as you say.
Just for the boot screen and/or to select a boot disk - is this correct?

Some people don't. But you get boot screens, full PCIe speed in Windows, and correct device reporting in OS X.

And PCIE 2.0 speed in 3,1 in OS X, and all 3,1-5,1 in Windows.

So non-flashed are limited to PCIE 1.0. To a layman like me this sounds terrible like your apps will work at half speed.

I was interested to understand the significance of this and I found this graphic (some folks more knowledgeable than me will have to say whether this applies) - it seems to suggest the difference in actual performance from the downgrade to PCIE 1.0 is not great - but might be significant for some.

I'm having an issue and I'm wondering if anyone can help.
I have a 2009 Mac Pro and when I try to install P/N 02G-P4-2680-KR aka EVGA GTX 680 card flashed, the Machine would not turn on. No fans or light activated. I put in another card (EVGA GeForce GTX 960) to see what would happen. The same thing happens- Mac Pro would not power on. Things will be normal if I put the OEM GPU back in. Is the power supply not enough for my 680? Is something wrong with my Logic Board?

Other things to consider:
I have a Marvell RAID card, two SSDs in the lower DVD tray, one SSD in Tray 1, Three 3.5 HDDs in Trays 2,3,4. I have not installed any drivers.

How are you powering your video cards?

I used two mini PCI to PCI cables. I actually solved my problem. I feel silly that I made the mistake, but I inverted the cable from the Logic board. this is why the mac wouldn't power on. I don't know why I did it, but it happened. It is a tight space so it's hard to tell. But all is well now!

I have another question though. Since flashing the GTX 680, does this enable OpenCL for use with Final Cut Pro X?

I just got a used 2009 Mac pro, and I have the Galaxy 68NPH6DV5ZGV GTX 680 from my old build... Has it been CONFIRMED that this thing can be flashed over? I on't know whether or not to try and flash it (possible brick?) or just sell it and purchase a pre-flashed one off of ebay. :/

Well, I went ahead and tried flashing it (after backing up the original rom) and had no issues after overriding the board ID mismatch. Booting in a windows machine functioned fine, and gpu-z showed it as an EVGA card. The cables I need to actually power the GPU in my mac is coming today via mail. I'll update on how it goes.

It will work, this is the exact card I flashed and it works great in my 2010 Mac Pro
See thread 169

Fantastic! Again, I'm gonna update you guys in how it goes later. If something isn't working, I'll probably come ask you (or anyone else) for help. ;D

So I've flashed my EVGA GTX 680 4GB successfully. Boot logo appears.

However, I have two Apple Cinema Displays hooked up via DVI on both. But I am only getting one screen on at a time on OS X?

When I install the drivers on Windows 10 they both work.

Why won't both monitors show up on OS X when connected to both DVI ports? :(

Thanks for any input!

Starting with 10.9.3 and later, the upper DVI port doesn't work with the freely available ROM for the 4GB card. See thread here.

The freely available ROM for the 2GB card works fine, and MacVidCard's flashing service for the 4GB card works fine.

So you'll either have to buy an adapter so you can use one of the other ports on the video card with your ACD, switch to a 2GB GTX 680 and flash it, or get MVC's flashing service for your 4GB card.

Can you explain what macvidcard is doing differently that enables both dvi ports?

If your Apple DVI displays are 24" or less a simple passive HDMI or DP to DVI adapter ($10 or so) is the quick and easy fix.

If both displays are 30" you will the fixed rom or a Dp to dual link DVI adapter, these are like $100 and require USB power.

Can you maybe point me in the direction as to what needs fixing in the ROM? I'd like to fix this so I don't have to spend another $100 on an adapter
