kernelpanicffs, Continues to display Apples customer experience position and strategy. The fact that the product does not work and function as advertised or as you expect is due to you having incorrect expectations of the product. Seems this is not going to be fixed in BigSur and it will continue for a long time yet. Eventually if sales fall far enough it may actually get addressed....until then, or the existing hardware becomes obsolete, simply find some work around and do not upgrade. It may be inconvenient and problematic and not the experience on any other platform but it stops frustration. When your hardware becomes obsolete then look for alternatives. The other option is to just sell your MAC and move to linux like johnalan suggests. Seems this is going to be a long term multiyear issue and I would not be surprised if this is actually a hardware issue in the end.

The responsibility of the watchdog is to reset the CPU in case the kernel hangs. Do not blame the messenger look for the root cause instead.
Not blaming anything, just trying to ascertain that we're talking abut the same kind of Kernel Panic. :)

Not blaming anything, just trying to ascertain that we're talking abut the same kind of Kernel Panic. :)

That is a fair comment, point taken.

My concern is that I see several different categories of kernel panics and in these forums they often get bunched into one group. Reading deeper in the logs may reveal a root cause and help you find a work around. So I agree with you that it is important that we do not mix them up in discussion.

Personally I have had kernel panics waking from sleep, which I have verified (on different systems and different OS versions) are related to CalDigit TS3+. Removing the TS3+ completely removes all kernel panics.

As an aside it seems that Apple is aware of the “noise” caused be people reading the logs and has put some work into improving them, e.g. references to BridgeOS (T2) seems to have been removed. Again T2 was generally the messenger. :)

I've been working through the issue with Apple for a period of weeks now, trying to determine whether there was specific software causing a problem, fresh installs etc on my Mac Mini 2018 - and no matter what we did, it still did a kernel panic at shutdown.

That eventually led to Apple saying that they would need to replace the motherboard.

I got my computer back yesterday, and whilst the motherboard has been replaced it came back with 16Gb of RAM instead of 32Gb of RAM which i had previously.

However, whilst I'll deal with that as an issue, I have yet to have a kernel panic since getting it back. I know some others have said they have had motherboard replacements and it hasn't resolved the issue - so will continue to monitor.

Disgusting mess. Still occurring in Big Sur, clean install. Beta 6. This occurred during update to 7 as I had to reboot to update. ****ing lol.

Seems unrelated, but I just tried the game Magic the Gathering: Arena which was released for macOS a couple of months ago on Catalina 10.15.6, and after quitting the game the screen froze for a few seconds and then the computer restarted with the following Kernel Panic log:

No watchdog mentioned here, but…
The drivers for the RX 5700 XT on Windows 10 was recently updated to 20.9.1 with a fix for:

A black screen, system crash or TDR may occur while gaming when performing task switches, enabling performance metrics overlay, or having video content/web browsers open on secondary displays on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products system configurations.

I wonder if this in any way might have any implications for the macOS drivers? 🤔

Oh, well… Since the panic with ”watchdog timeout” being mentioned also seem to happen with Intel GPUs I guess there's more to it than AMD graphics drivers. 🤷‍♂️

Well thats confidence to not upgrade to BigSur yet either. This is on your replacement Mac right?

Yep on the replacement (new logic board mac) which by the way, I checked my router logs and compared MAC address for the WiFi chip on the old and new logic boards, they are manufactured about 2 million addresses apart, so defo from different batches.

I think it may be software at this point but I cannot understand how it goes unfixed. How do engineers at Apple put up with not being able to shutdown macOS gracefully ffs.

Out of curiosity what shows for the first 5 loaded kexts in the crash report.

Can’t remember, will post full panic log next time it happens (tomorrow).

Yep I think it’s something deeper. Like maybe a fundamental issue with the kernel on some build to order macs.

Well seems I'm staying on 10.15.1 still. I get issues with external monitors and a KP every few weeks after Apple replaced my 2017 logic board as Catalina killed it. Since then, and with Covid, I've not been game to even contemplate doing an upgrade given all the problems with external monitors and KP. Guess I will be staying here for a long time yet by the looks of the problem being in BigSur as well. At this point in time it is not promising that this will get fixed. I was considering a new MAC but now I've decided that since Apple can not produce reliable software that works with hardware that I will wait for as long as absolutely possible. That probably means for another 1-2 years. There is no reason to throw $$ at a high end expensive machine to find that it is unreliable. Disappointing.

Sad isn't it that new device with nothing attached crash. And seeing all the attempted work arounds to turn every thing thats possible in the OS off and then uninstall software of any nature. It is just a mess that will eventually hurt Apple. Apple seem to want to ignore that the problem exists and it has a history of doing this until the noise gets too loud. Guess a year is not long enough.....maybe 2.

Just finished reading this entire thread, thought I'd chip in with my experience:

2017 iMac Pro (Radeon Pro Vega 56)
DELL U2718Q via Thunderbolt/DisplayPort
macOS 10.15.6

I have gotten a "panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f8aba1ad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds service: com.apple.logd, total successful checkins since load [etc]" several times with very specific GPU loads.

I am a college professor and I am teaching remotely. We use Webex (YUCK), and I have to share my iPad screen, which Webex does not directly support. To do this I use QuickTime -> New Movie Recording, then choose my iPad as the source; this mirrors my iPad onto my screen. I then share QuickTime through Webex. I'm also streaming audio and video, plus receiving video from my class - so theres a lot of stuff going on. I have had the above panic about 20% of the time using this setup. Usually things freeze up after ~1 hour of doing this.

Also just finished reading this entire thread; (and every other thread I could find on the internet).

My primary machine is running 10.15.6 w/ the supplemental update. It crashes every day (usually around 10am) with this same panic. I've got all suggested options set. Running Caffeine seems to extend the uptime to 3-5 days, even though sleep is disabled. Specs: iMac Pro 10-core/128/Vega 64 w/ 5700xt in Razor eGPU, LG 5k, Apple XDR, and Dell 38" Ultrawide. Unplugging everything does nothing to change the frequency of the crashes.

Just upgraded a headless 2013 Mac Pro from 10.15.3 (fresh install) to 10.15.6 and now it's doing the same thing, daily. Sadly, it's offsite and requires me to send someone to physically restart it.

Lastly, I have a 2019 MBP 15" also on 10.15.6 that has never experienced this issue, even when connected to the same eGPU & displays as the iMac, but it recently has started suffering crashes from "Sleep Wake Failure in EFI" errors.

Pulling my hair out... This is absurd.

Still there. 🥴

I was nearly excited because there was a release note to say:

  • An issue with the kernel no longer causes applications to quit unexpectedly. (69093270)
but....

Excellent Analysis here:

Just to let you know I've also ruled out it being a bad macOS install by doing a clean install of Catalina 10.15.6 – same Kernel Panic happened there too after a while.

The only third party app that was running was Firefox with a YouTube clip open and after a wake from sleep the screen stayed black and a minute or so later the computer restarted showing me the Kernel Panic log. :(
