Back in Mojave things are OK for you, or?

Yesterday after a freeze with Catalina (not a kp, I have to shutdowon my MM manually) I decided to go back to mojave.

Unfortunately I have big problems with my eGPU (Razer Core X) under Mojave. The mm no more go to sleep (wake up immediately) and trying to eject the eGPU shutdown the mini.

I will wait Big Sur but at this time I'm no more confident on Apple resolving the issue in the new s.o. also.

That somehow resembles what I‘m experiencing: rock stable for days or even weeks, with no problems when sleeping/waking the machine and automatic display sleep enabled; then, all of a sudden I get back to the machine having KP‘d and shut itself down. After that I most likely get additional KPs shortly after (either the WindowServer one or a CPU CATERR), after which the machine is likely to be stable again for several days.
No clue as to what is really going on here...

Same here. I can work without problems for days. But starting a youtube paused video can freeze.I think it's absolutely random behavior

Which GPU do you have in your external box?

Hi. Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 8Gb GDDR5.
OK. But you say you don’t see the Kernel Panic (watchdog timeout) discussed in this thread?

Maybe you have some hardware trouble with the Mac mini and/or the RX580? Difficult to say. But maybe it's software. 🤷‍♂️

Still, I don't really have any stability problems while using Catalina (on RX 5700XT). It's mostly upon wake from sleep for me. One or twice during boot too I think. I don't know how many times I've written that in this thread now. :)

So to me, it sounds like a hardware issue, but one that coincides with Catalina software.
You might be on to something here.

I just wonder where the hardware problem is at? Seems to be pointing att the GPU, though. The interesting thing is that I had my GPU replaced (RX 5700XT) since my first unit had trouble with sudden black screens in Windows 10 while also having those "watchdog timeout" Kernel Panics in Catalina.

Now with my new replacement GPU things are stable in Windows 10, but the Kernel Panics continue in Catalina. :(

Another freeze here... Nothing special, I was browsing the forum... Very disappointed.

At time of writing I have disconnected my eGPU. I will work without it for the next days and see what happen.

Re-connected my eGPU. Let the MM stop for several hours.

Waked up, safari browsing, then another KP. In the evening I will post my KP as it reference some AMD driver... Maybe Razer Core X and RX580 are causing it (I hope, I can live without eGPU, not optimal but I can do it).

That's the one we’re all (well, not all but many) are seeing. :(

RX580 via eGPU connected?

yes. I think the problem described below persist:

Someone said it helped to install the combo update on top of the existing installation. I doubt it, but can be worth a try:

Got my 2020 MBA 512gb back from Apple for kernel panic fix. They replaced logic board and Touch ID board. We'll see how it goes. No KP yet, but not much run time.

Good to know. I recently bought a 2020 Macbook Air Quad-Core Intel Core i7. I hope that it doesn't have this issue. When did you start seeing this issue? My machine is only 1 week old.
After about a week or two. Tried everything. Finally took to genius bar, sent off for repair

2 days of use, and no KP yet.
Do you put it to sleep and wake it often?
I do with my work 13" MacBook Pro from 2018 with Catalina and there I don't really see this Kernel Panic.

It only happens in my computer with RX 5700 XT graphics, so the question is if it's something with the driver for that graphics card or I have a hardware problem with that specific GPU. At the some time I don't see any stabiltiy problems in Windows 10 and we know there are several who started to get the Kernel Panic discussed here since Catalina was installed. Seems strange that everyone seeing this KP would start to get hardware problems at the time of installing Catalina… 🤔

I do sleep/wake fairly often. I'm not sure on the rest, I just got it in July, so had Catalina already installed. It's my first MBA, always wanted one. Had an iPad pro 9.7" before that.

I have removed the eGPU and no kp at all... I can put it to sleep, wake up, playing youtube video etc

It works like a charm. Will see what to do next because I need an eGPU for video editing, LR and PS. So my problem was the eGPU for sure. When it was attached I have a kp every wake up or so.

I hope wrong TB3 cable (bought a compatible one) or wrong GPU cause the problem. In the next days hope to have a new Razer Core X with the original cable bundled and a new GPU.

Will be interesting to hear how it goes – good luck! :)

I'm suspecting it might be related to graphic drivers for (some of?) those AMD cards, but I'm mostly guessing here, so could be wrong.

Hey @star-affinity I'm trying my new eGPU setup (Razer Core X + Sapphire Pulse RX580 8gb DDR5). Same behavior as the previous setup. Continuos kernel panic after wake up from sleep if I have my eGPU connected tu my monitor via Display Port OR via HDMI.

No problem at all if I use my eGPU for processing (so only connected via TB3 cable and my monitor to my mm via TB3 to Display Port cable).

I have the exact same behavior described here:

And as described "Additionally, an eGPU installed and connected to a Mac, with the display connected directly to the Mac and not through the GPU will still accelerate workflows like video processing with no issue." I have no issue at all.

Any hints/help/suggestion?

I don't have any suggestions other than hoping Big Sur (that might released tomorrow) will help on the issue. 😕

Edit:
When I said ”tomorrow” I meant ”today” 10th of November (it was late at night here when I posted the above, so already passed Monday). :)

Edit 2:
OK, Big Sur will be released on the 12th of November.

Update:

So after 2 whole weeks of my MacPro (Late 2013) being at the Apple Repair Center I finally got it back.

"We were unable to reproduce your issue(s).
Our technicians performed comprehensive testing and could not reproduce the issue(s) you reported. Your product passed every diagnostic and extended test we performed."

So they didn't do squat.

How are they supposed to reproduce the issue if they don't actually do a regular startup of your system? Which I was told by the store that they don't. They only start up with their external tools and safe starts, etc.

Looks like I'm screwed. And, so far, I've heard that Big Sur doesn't fix the problem.
