I am also seeing -20 as crash shutdown reason

Code:
2020-11-19 22:12:06.240157+0530 0xd0 Default 0x0 0 0 kernel: (AppleSMC) Previous shutdown cause: -20

I can also confirm that I am also getting -20 as the shutdown reason.

This problem had gone away for me in 10.15.6+

Back with a vengeance in Big Sur (including the 11.1 beta).

I can resolve this issue by unplugging one of my two external monitors. (iMac Pro)

Have you tried the the SMC reset I suggested above?

Been having kernel panic crashing for a while now on my 2019 iMac but it seems to have gotten worse and sometimes happens multiple times a day. I updated to Big Sur yesterday hoping it would fix it but it happened again just 10 minutes after. I've attached my crash log and report to see if anyone can help with it being something specific. I don't use an external GPU but I do have 2 external displays connected over USB-C to HDMI.

Maybe you could try to remove one of those drivers at a time (if you don't need them) and see if it makes any difference:

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 2
com.displaylink.DisplayLinkDriver 5.2.4 (82)
com.intel.driver.EnergyDriver 3.6.0

I would start with the DisplayLinkDriver.

Oh, I see now that you have an old version 5.2.4 of the DisplayLink driver. Maybe you could try to uninstall the one you have with the installer found in the 5.2.4 version under ”Legacy Releases” here:

After that install the ”DisplayLink Manager Graphics Connectivity” there at the top which says it is for Big Sur. Or maybe skip installing it at all if you don't need it. :)

On my system I'm ready to conclude that the Kernel Panics I had in Catalina are gone since the Big Sur release. ?

That Intel driver is out of date too. I was having periodic watchdog-related panics until I got rid of the Intel Power Gadget.

I have done countless SMC and PRAM resets. The only thing that reliably prevents crashing is disconnecting one of my external monitors, or using Amphetamine App to keep the screens on 24/7.

Uninstalled all 3 of those and unfortunately, it still happened :( I'm not sure if there is anything I can provide to give any further hints? The report a problem tool crashed on me when I selected report too. I could try reinstalling macOS but its something I was hoping to avoid.

Sorry to hear that. :(

Maybe just try to re-apply the operating system on top the current install. Could help put things in place without anything on your current install being removed.

I am doing exactly the same thing on an iMac Pro. I'm running 2 older 27" Dells from the correct thunderbolt ports and running Amphetamine. I had 3 crashes today though. All while using Video or screen share through Skype. It's so intermittent. I could go for a week, and then 3 crashes in a day. I just don't know whether to clean install again. I have a 4 month job coming up and always feel like I'm in square one. Training an Octopus is easier than fixing this thing.

Were you stable with the last two releases of Catalina? I had 60+ days of uptime with 10.15.6 and 10.15.7.

I will say, that I got a KP doing a zoom screenshare last week (Big Sur) and that is one of the few times it has crashed while actively using the computer.

Again, if I unplug one monitor, this thing is flawlessly stable. I just refuse to accept that as a solution on a $6k business workstation.

Absolutely! I'm wondering how far off a class action is.

What video card are you using? I have the Radeon Pro Vega 64 with 16gb of ram. Also using 2 x single thunderbolt to DisplayPort cables.

Also find it interesting that Apple no longer supports this cable on their site...

Congrats!!! You've been on this thread since the beginning, so I wanted to come and celebrate. Thanks for helping everyone debug all these months.

I'm still kernel-panic-free since Apple replaced my Mac due to this issue in February. I'm still rocking 10.15.3 since I don't want to rock the boat, but since you've had good luck with Big Sur, I may give it a go.

Completely not game to try Big Sur after losing a logic board due to Catalina upgrade on a 2017 MBP. I'm still sitting on what the replacement logic board had when repaired which is 10.15.1. It has external display resolution issues in inconsistency in setting the resolution but I have workarounds. Looking at all the Kernel Panic and external monitor issues associated with later Catalina versions I'm simply not game to tempt fate and try any Apple upgrade let alone Big Sur. My machine will see out its life on 10.15.1 I guess. I wish everyone who upgrades luck and hope the Kernel Panics are solved for you. When it comes to customers, Apple seems to only respond to the law. Some of the other threads are asking how long this will run before a class action takes place. Will be an interesting question I think.

Wow, thanks! ???

I've been reporting to Apple continuously since Catalina 10.15.2 which is when I jumped to Catalina from High Sierra. Since I'm on a MacPro5,1 (with RX 5700 XT graphics) I don't have a computer that is supported by Apple to run Catalina nor Big Sur, but since other people with supported hardware had the same (or similar…) problem I've kept sending reports and updating my bug report.

This problem seems to have many causes – like someone said ”watchdog timeout” is a symptom of the underlying cause – it sure seems the problem can be both software and/or hardware related.

Glad to hear it's stable for you too since that hardware replacement.

You would think that after more than a year Apple would be capable of fixing this. Obviously not a big enough issue for them to do anything about. Look forward to the next release of emoticon.

Is that on the Big Sur 11.1 beta?

Edit:
Aha, it's the newer 20B50 build of Big Sur 11.0.1. I passed on the log to Apple in my old, still open ”watchdog timoute” report. Not sure if it's of any value to them.

Big Sur 11.0.1. I will try to reproduce....
The best thing is if you can generate a ”sysdiagnose” in close proximity of the Kernel Panic. More info here (still valid for newer macOS releases):

It's great if you can estimate the time of the Kernal Panic occurrence too – will be easier for engineers to find a possible cause in the logs then.

I can then attach that to my bug report with Apple, if it's okay with you. If you can think of a good way to share the file – it tends to be a few hundred MB in size. :)

If you want to share the ”sysdiagnose” with Apple yourself there's more instructions here (requires login with Apple-ID):

It's necessary to reproduce the Panic first and the sysdiagnose in close proximity? correct?

I have given a report on feedbackassistant.apple.com

It says

Code:
Recent Similar Reports:None

I cant believe that nobody else has reported similar problem.

My problem is not related to windowserver, I get crash only on shutdown/reboot.

Okay, damn. I got my first Kernel Panic since Big Sur now – sudden restart when opening a link in a new window in Firefox. But no mention of ”watchdog timeout” like I used to get.

Instead talks about ”panic(cpu 7 caller” and ”kernel trap” and ”Fault CR2”.

Strange – it has been super stable for almost two weeks of usage, and wake/sleep several times,

Oh, well… ?
