I assume that with the light that has been helpfully cast on Ser Bartholomeus's sword, along with my Darkvision and that of Master Veit, we can see well enough.

Does it matter much what order we take when walking back up the cave towards that rickety bridge?

I believe Portia has some sort of lantern, she probably should take Claus hand (ugh) and lead him the way.

And I also think it's best we give a walking order. Imho it could be Veit, Bart, Portia, Syllin and Claus. I don't recall whether you used mage's armor but if yes I guess it could be good if you walk last and keep an eye on our backs and what probably could try to sneak up from behind.
[doublepost=1458572123][/doublepost]edit: lunch is over so my time is rather sparse now, if mage's armor is as good as it sounds you could very well take my spot at the top too. But someone has to double check on that (whether your AC is better / equal than mine)..

Eating lunch there sounds grueling :).

Veit's armor class is better then Syllin's. I suggest that Veit goes in front and Syllin stays at the end of our group to keep an eye behind us.

Fair enough. I shall bring up the rear, close behind whoever walks in front, keeping an eye open for what await us.

And yes, I have donned Mage Armour, and still have two spell slots to hand.

Veit, please wait to cast light on my scimitar (i have that and shield at the ready) until we get to the wolf's den height. then just get a little ahead to scout the bridge with darkvison, to see if anyone is up there. if so we should do as before (light on bridge and ranged mass attack). in nobody can be spotted, then put the light on the sword and we can get to the bridge.
the rope (if still there) is knotted, so it should be a trivial climb this time.
if the rope is not there, we should knot claus's coil and toss it over the bridge. i think one free climbing attempt was enough.
also, watch out for rumbling noises

The party rises from an hour-long rest, and determined to investigate further into a possible rescue of Sildar Hallwinter and Gundren Rockseeker, they return to the cave. Bartholomeus' scimitar was glowing a rose golden glow as Veit led the party deeper into the cave. They soon arrived at the hanging rope hanging from the rope, right where they left it. They start to climb up the rope. This time, the climb was easily accomplished thanks to previous preparations adding the knots to the rope.

Arriving at the bridge, Portia unties and retrieves her rope.

I will go ahead into the western entrance. Where we heard the laughter and other voices coming from before. Any signs, noises? I will carefully explore that tunnel (?)..I guess the others will follow behind.

We look hard and listen attentively, paying an especially close heed to those cave openings at either end of the bridge.

Are we clustered together on the bridge, or slightly spread out?

My belly is rumbling..

..lunch was only so-so.

@ravenvii : I'll do as DP suggested. And go ahead.

Hungry? Or, um, feeling a bit unwell?

i think it should be syllin to go scouting ahead this time, at least she has +2 in stealth, while you have -1 with your clunky armor. and if there is any light at all, then it should be Portia

In what order should we advance behind you?

With some small skill at stealth (occasionally crashing into book stacks when my mind was elsewhere was an autumnal speciality of mine at the Wizard University), Darkvision, and Mage Armour, you mean?

Very well then. I will advance slowly but cautiously, shortsword to hand.

Apart from Master Veit, who also has Darkvision, how well do the rest of us see? And how closely are we to one another and in what order?

You quietly walk along the western passage from the bridge. The passage gently slopes down and to the left. You soon come upon two openings -- one to your left, which leads to a escarpment downwards and filled with rubble -- and the one directly head.

In the opening directly ahead, you see five goblins laughing and shouting playful obscenities around a cooking fire.

The large cave is divided in half by a ten-foot-high escarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge. The air is hazy with the smoke of a cooking fire, and pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins.

The goblins are paying absolutely no attention -- they haven't even heard the flood! -- so they wouldn't have noticed you even if you did not bother to sneak. You look up the ledge and see one more goblin sitting there, watching the others.

And Sildar Hallwinter. He has been beaten and tortured within an inch of his life. You recoil inside when you notice that Hallwinter's left leg is missing -- and realize what, exactly, is cooking in the fire.

Ah, @ravenvii, are we in the upper ledge or level of that space? And, are the goblins on our level, or below us?

Am I the only person who sees this, or have we all noticed this horrid scene?

well, us with normal vision fare as you would expect.
blinded in pitch dark, view poorly in dim light and well in bright light.
right now we we are with a light on the bridge, this projects 20 ft of bright light and 20 of dim.
so you see perfectly for 40 feet (bright and dim) and poorly from there on (in dark, you see normal equivalent of dim). the goblin see as well as you, so if you can see them, they can see you (barring hiding and stealth).
if wherever they are laughing they have light (and since they vision is not zero, but still poor in darkness, they would use light for normal circumstances), that light would project for some range as bright (typically 30 feet for a torch), and then some distance longer longer as dim light.
so depending on the length, twists and extra rooms in the dungeon, there might be virtually no full darkness or long stretches of it

did Syllin come back and reported to us her gruesome findings?

I shall take that as a most timely hint. ;)

Quietly, and cautiously, I retrace my steps, signal for silence to my comrades with a raised hand, and quietly brief them on what I have just seen, as well as the lay out of the goblin camp fire, not omitting the one solitary goblin sitting off to one side above them.

@ravenvii, with the cooking fire, there must be some light in the cave ?

Once Syllin returns with her info, we can plan.

Sleep spell on the 5 goblins in the center of the room while the rest of us range attack (after the sleep spell is cast) the goblin on the ledge (assuming we can see it with the fire in the room) ?

Yes, I am considering it, but I wish to know of @ravenvii where we all are viz-a-viz the goblins, and where they are re the actual slope, or escarpment, or the two levels.

If someone could depict it visually, that would be greatly appreciated.

More to the point, who is able to see what I have seen?
You are on the lower level. You are the only one in the tunnel at the moment.

>>> Yes, there is light enough for everyone to see once you get past the passage.

Where did I see the goblins? On the lower or upper levels?

sleep would take care of 0-5 goblin depending on the result of the 5d8 roll (7 points/goblin), which then we have a minute to kill before they wake up (that is ~10 rounds), so plenty of time.

burning hand could also be an option to attack the 5 goblins around the fire, since they are all bunched up. depending on dice rolls they could all be killed right away, but even if not , all of them would take some damage

> well, let's do the ol' "raise your hand if you're willing to kill a sleeping opponent" before we proceed.

*imagines sawing on a medium burned and partly chewn on leg in the near future*

*raises hand*

edit:
Syllin (@ravenvii), did you see a cage or something alike where the prisoner is/was held? We could lock them up for good that way.
