In case you guys fogot (like me), that was said by the inn-keeper / their boy who mentioned a secret tunnel in the woods, a tunnel the dude at the Alderleaf Farm knows sth about:

"She's the farmer, on the Alderleaf farm! She's a halfling and--!" before the excited boy could continue, his mother places a hand on his shoulder and nudged him to sit back down. She gives him a scolding look, and eyes you again.

"Those Redbrands," a woman on the other side of Ms. Stonehill said disapprovingly. "The townmaster lets them roam free, hassling us. 'For protection', he says. Cow dung, I say! They're trouble. They do whatever they want because the worthless townmaster is too afraid of them! They hassle every business in town, except for for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange. They don't want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it."

Ms. Stonehill adds, "hush, Freda! We don't want trouble with the Redbrands at the inn!" She looks at you. "Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too." She nods vigorously, "so you keep to yourselves and don't bring trouble to this here inn."

To Sildin: "No Sir. Unfortunately it took us long enough to sell our goods so we could prepare for the upcoming conflicts. Thank you for paying us our fare but we are still unsure if we can afford all that is necessary and got offered a little "detour" which includes the infamous redbrands. Can you tell us something about them? Are they really that bad?

On another note, you don't know about the Alderleaf farm by any chance, do you? We were told that they eventually have some possibly interesting informations to share but don't know where to start looking for them.

But of course we haven't forgot about Cragmaw Castle and my cousin Gundren who is imprisioned there. If I may ask another question, we were asking ourselves - you saw it with your own very eyes - if our party is fully up to task ahead of us. And it's not just about the equipment but....but if you happen to know about a reliable adventurer that may be eager to join our part we would be very grateful to hear about him or her!"

Slider approaches the party and out of earshot of the townmaster, who is busy yelling agitated orders to two townsfolk who has appeared -- you surmise that they work at the Hall.

"Have you learned anything regarding the location of Cragmaw Castle from the locals?"

Reply: We have been inquiring about Iarno Albrek since you told us that he might know the location of Cragmaw Castle. Unfortunately, nobody we asked had information on him. Do you have additional suggestions on who might know its location ?

Halia Thornton has asked us to handle Glasstaff and bring her any correspondence we may find in his quarters. We didn't feel comfortable around her (she appeared to have ulterior motives) and we were wondering if you knew anything about her ?

Dou you have any idea where Grundren's brothers might be ? Unless you want us to head somewhere, we plan on visiting the Sleepy Giant next followed by a visit to Sister Graele (Temple of Luck). We also want to find more information on the Redbrands.

I noticed the wanted poster on the town hall door. I think that Veit (@twietee) should talk with the town master, tell him how we cleaned out the goblin lair and inquire about the reward. Even if there is no reward for that, inquire about the orc reward poster. Whatever you do Veit, don't let the town master know that we are associated with Silder (it doesn't look like the town master is very happy with Sildar)..

"The Redbrands are an obstacle of the goals of the Lords' Alliance. To accomplish my purpose here, they must be eliminated. The townmaster claims that they are protecting the town, that they have accomplished what I and Iarno had come to do -- that Phandalin has no need for the Lords' Alliance. But I can see with my own eyes. Terrorizing is not protection."

"Hmm, the Alderleaf farm? It is a large farm at the southeastern corner of Phandalin. It is directly southwest of the Tresendar Manor -- perhaps they may have overheard or seen something? You should investigate."

"The townsfolk speak of a dwarf who arrived some time ago. They say he is a simple drunk, but I suspect he is more than that -- otherwise why come to Phandalin? He may be inclined to help you."

"The Redbrands are an obstacle to the goals of the Lords' Alliance in Phandalin. As you know Iarno Albrek's mission was to establish order and security in Phandalin and set it on the path to civilization with the help of the re-opening of the mines of Phandelver. Unfortunately, according to the townsfolk, he disappeared shortly after he arrived while exploring the area around Tresendar Manor. Because of this information, I suspect the Redbrands may be involved, directly or indirectly.

"I shall reward you with 200 gold pieces if you are to determine the whereabouts of Iarno Albrek. That should get you quite ready for an excursion into Cragmaw Castle. And if Iarno is alive, he is very likely knowledgeable of the region, and will tell you the location of the Castle."

Slider's face darkened upon hearing Halia Thornton's name. "Even the Redbrands stay away from her and the Miner's Exchange. I have not met her yet, but from what I hear, she is quite powerful in Phandalin -- perhaps even more powerful than the townmaster himself."

"Gundren related to me that he has two brothers who are camping outside of town. Unfortunately that is the extent of my knowledge regarding the Rockseeker brothers. The Redbrands indeed frequent the Sleeping Giant. That, along with investigating the Alderleaf farm, would be a good place to begin. Hmm, Sister Graele? The Shrine of Luck are always an important aspect of developing towns, and its Sisters are always willing to help, but I am not aware of any connection between the Redbrands and the Shrine -- and indeed I pray that there are none."

To Sildin: "Hmm, it seems as if the two questions at hand,

- where is Gundren/Cragmaw Castle
- what about the Redbrands harassing these parts

are somewhat linked by the person of Iarno. It strikes me as a good idea to investigate the Redbrands a little further. Just so we get the full picture: Can you please elaborate a litte more on the goals of the Lord's Alliance? Why do you want to re-open the mines of Phandelver - or vice versa: why were they shut down in the first place? And that's a kind offer you just made, where is this Tresendar Manor? You don't happen to have a map of this area by any chance? Or any idea where we could buy one?"

To Sildin "Also, thanks a lot for that information about that dwarf. I didn't notice one in the tavern so he might be lurking around the Sleeping Giant. Another good reason to have a drink over there."

I'll await his answer, will shake his hand afterwards and go, with a little detour, through the room to the town master.

"As you know, the Lords' Alliance is an alliance of lords in the regions surrounding the city of Neverwinter. Their goals is to bring prosperity and security to the regions. The outlying regions, such as Phandalin, has suffered economic catastrophes in one way or other, and we are working to bring civilization and development to the regions. The mines of Phandelver was once the most important source of wealth in the region. Indeed, Phandalin was once a wealthy town in a prosperous region, with a ruling lord, who ruled from Thundertree. Tresendar Manor was once the residence of the lords of Phandalin. Unfortunately the lords are long gone and the source of wealth, the mines, were lost. Until the Rockseekers re-discovered them.

Gundren and I are traveling here to re-open the mines, establish order and bring Phandalin back to the path to a flourishing town.

I am not very familiar with the layout of the town yet; the townmaster will know where the Manor is."

Thanking him, you approach the townmaster.

@twietee how do you engage the townmaster?

*** @Don't panic I see you haven't posted in a while -- hope everything is okay!

"It is a pleasure to meet you townmaster! We two may have a word? My name is Veit Frostbeard, cousin of Gundren Rockseeker - I believe you know him - and was on my way up to Phandalin with a couple of other adventurers to bring supplies for an unspecified exploration up here when we got raided by a group of bushwacking Goblins. Lost our guide and all of our horses in that accident but fortunately were able to overcome them. One goblin could be taken hostage and eventually led us to their hideout - which we were, including some trouble, also able to take care of.

*I'll mention the name of the goblin-chief there, but in no way do I have time to search this thread now for it :D*

Yep, he's a goner. *pausing and tickeling my beard*

Listen, I saw the poster at the entrance. Is it something serious? Me and my friends would be happy to help, but quite frankly I have to ask you about the reward before. Securing the southern (? was it South I don't recall, I'll mention the road/direction we came) passage was difficult enough and cost us more than we gained - not to mention our guide Belaver that paid with his life."

"Also, do you happen to know about the whereabouts of my cousin Gundren by any chance? We were told by the goblins that they brought him to a Castle called Cragmaw. Ever heard about that?"
[doublepost=1469462017][/doublepost]Klarg, that's the name! :D

"You will? Good, good! The reward will be generous, I assure you. Generous."

You can just hear the townmaster mumble under his breath about how this will prove he is securing the town, and will show that one-legged knight, show him good.

"It's up on the Triboar trail that you came into town on. Just continue on that and you'll end up at the Wyvern Tor. Kill a few orcs and come back and get your reward. No more than a day!"

"Crag-what? Ain't heard of none of that. Go to Wyvern Tor, you hear? That's where the money is, the reward yes? Generous, I assure you."

I'll do a wisdom check on him. Especially about the Craigmaw part (if that is possible).

"Hmm, that is unfortunate. I was hoping both incidents were probably connected. You see, we are a bit in a hurry to rescue my cousin so I will have to discuss this with my fellow adventurers. Maybe knowing what kind of reward they could expect would help me convice them.."

The townmaster is a moron, so the wisdom check is easy. A DC 10 should be more than enough:

Veit: 14
***

You perceive no subtleness within the character. He believes himself to be cunning and scheming, but he wears his plans on his sleeve. What he says is more or less true, and when he lies, it is obvious. He is being truthful about his knowledge of Cragmaw Castle, and is being truthful (at least in his mind) regarding the generousness of the reward.

"Gold, of course! What are you expecting? This is a dignified and civilized township!"

"Thank you for this conversation, this town can call itself lucky to have such a townmaster in charge."

I'll leave the building and wait outside for the others while smoking my pipe. I also do roll my eyes when asured nobody notices.

So no reward for the goblin lair :( ?

All: Let's go to the Sleeping Giant first after we divide the money. It has the best chance of having the people we are looking for.

@ravenvii, how much money have we spent so far in town ? We had 600 CP and 125 SP.
*** You've only spent the money on the beers and food at the inn "last" night. @Scepticalscribe was keeping score at the time.

On, let's move to that Sister. I believe sleeping giant may be part of the next chapter already.

After the party met in front of the townhall we were heading into the direction of the temple. Syllin leading the way as if she already knew it before. Must be natural intuition.

Not at the moment; sorry, @ravenvii: But that sort of accounting took place (ages) some time ago.

Anyway, we spent money on beer and food - if I recall rightly, Sildar paid for our accommodation - and I also paid for a bath (and hot water).

As for the rest, I have no idea of what our finances are. (@ravenvii, you will have to let us know the details).

And yes, I think it a good idea to make our way to the Sister Garaele, for a chat.

Personally, I would like a word with Sister Garaele, before we make a decision to head off anywhere else; and, of course, a visit to The Sleeping Giant may well be in order.

On, let's move to that Sister. I believe sleeping giant may be part of the next chapter already.

The sister and everything else is part of the second chapter (us getting paid and dividing the money was the end of the first chapter).

I was hoping to get @Huntn into the game before we start the new chapter (drunken dwarf at the sleeping giant). He's been waiting forever to get into the game. That's why I was hoping to go to the Sleeping Giant first followed by the sister.

@ravenvii, can you decide on a fair value that we have spent so far ? Meals / beers for us and the small number of people in the inn we talked to along with the bath.

*** So... Sleeping Giant, anyone?

Fair enough: I hadn't realised that the sequence of where we went and in what order mattered.

Sleeping Giant first, followed by a visit to Sister Garaele (and remember, in our tavern "last night" a few individuals suggested that we visit her and see what she might be able to tell us).

Usually not except we have to go to the Sleeping Giant to get @Huntn into the game. I'm also very interested in talking to the sister after we pick up Veit jr. (@Huntn) :).

*** So... Sleeping Giant, anyone?

Orders @ravenvii: We go to the Sleeping Giant.

You turn right from the entrance of the Hall and onto a smaller road that goes off past the inn towards the east. As you walk down this road, the neighborhood slowly transforms from relatively clean and well-kept to run-down and crumbling.

Eventually you reach the very edge of the town. You can see that the road continues winding up a large hill before arriving at a large structure. The structure looks like a small castle or a large manor. That must be the Tresendar Manor you've heard so much about recently.

The Sleeping Giant is a ramshackle taproom at the east end of town. Two human ruffians linger on the covered porch, perched on an empty ale barrel and leaning against the wall. They all wear grimy scarlet cloaks, their sullen stares fixed on you as you approach.

They begin to leer and spit when they see you approach, but did not stop you from entering.

Inside, the Sleeping Giant is dark and dingy. There is a bar at the far side, and several tables scattered around the tavern. One is lopsided, one of its legs broken into two.

All but two tables are empty; a man is sitting at one, staring down at a mug -- you suspect the mug is far from being his first, despite the early hour. The other is surrounded by several men who leered at each other loudly, but abruptly stopped and stared at you as you enter.

And finally, at the bar is several stools; only one is occupied. The occupant is the only non-human in the tavern; the dwarf is pounding the table demanding another mug. The weary bartender, a lean man of approximately sixty with wispy hair and a large belly, walks over to the dwarf, grabs the mug and pours a vile-looking alcoholic beverage into it before slamming it in the front of the dwarf.

The dwarf threw his head back and drank the contents with two or three gulps.

@Scepticalscribe @Plutonius @Moyank24 @Don't panic @twietee -- and yes, @Huntn, what do you do?

Quietly to Veit (@twietee): Do you know the dwarf at the bar ? There can't be many dwarves in the town so maybe he knows something about your cousin.

I say very loudly to Portia (@Moyank24) so everyone in the bar hears: Be careful if you decide to gamble here. I have never seen you win at gambling and I have no desire to see others take advantage of you and take all the money you earned from your last job..

Quietly to Syllin (@Scepticalscribe): Would you like to join me in talking to the person at the table ? It may be Iarno Albrek. He's the person who the Knight is looking for and who knows the location of the castle.
