Pretty sure mine still works. You just don't want to have upgrade your handset. It is switching the idea of hardware vs. software but in this modern age of smartphones you can't expect infinite support for hardware that is a couple of years old. So the new paradigm may mean hardware upgrades vs. software upgrades.

2 years is not infinite support! That is the minimal support most people would expect from a hardware vendor. Not everyone can afford to keep on buying the most up to date hardware year after year, and not everyone wants to.

So you bought something that didn't have all the features that you require and now you are crying that the manufacturer is treating you unfairly?

Not me personally. I sold my iPhone in May and got a Nokia... and no it's not as good as the iPhone :D

Just because someone isn't telling you to be decent or isn't reminding that you should be decent doesn't mean that you can't be decent.

I don't see how calling someone blindly defending Apple a fanboy is being indecent.

3G and 3GS users paid that before the inclusion of MMS in the software, so they are NOT paying extra for the use of MMS.

Also, that might be true in America, but it certainly isn't here. The O2 tariffs are the same on all three iPhones.

I never meant that they are paying more for MMS, just that the 3G and 3GS have different pricing models. The 2G was unsubsidized while the 3G and 3GS are subsidized. That doesn't mean they're cheaper.

Not in the UK we're not…

Ok, fair enough, I'm not from the UK so I don't know how the pricing is there. I wrote that as far as the U.S. is concerned since originally the 2G was only sold there, it only came out much later in the UK.

Plus, can't compare the UK with the US. The UK is rougly the size of Oregon, and Oregon is not even the largest of the 50 states. The ATT footprint is much bugger than O2's. It makes sense that it would take ATT more time to update their network. Also, the iPhone is sending some high quality photos. A lot higher in quality than your basic camera phone is capable of sending.

People are always going to complain about something. Something better will always come along. Things that were considered luxery in the early 1900s is considered neccessity today.

Disappointed in the fact something better came out after you already bought it? Welcome to the club. I bought an HDDVD player 31 days before they killed it. It's life. Welcome to it.

Here in the UK the tariffs are the same for all 3 iPhones. The only difference is the 3G/3GS are available for free on certain tariffs (and cheap on others) whereas the first gen iPhone was £269.

lmao @ people actually defending Apple in this situation.
Fanboyism at its finest.

Thank you!

I don't mean to be rude to people so sorry if it comes across that way, but I really don't believe Apple has a defence in this situation.

* People paid a lot for the 1st gen iPhone, way more than the the next two versions.
* The 1st gen iPhone is more than capable of sending MMS.
* The 1st gen iPhone received the same software update as the 3G and 3GS, yet they deliberately withheld a feature that the hardware is more than capable of running!

And people are paying for a text package that includes mms yet are being intentionally denied that service

My thoughts exactly. Although I do have a 3GS and am not directly affected by this, I do take note of it as another example of Apple tactics. With the rise & fall of product reins, if & when the tides turn on Apple in this area, I absolutely feel their practices to "encourage" upgrades will be a key element in their downfall.

As it stands now, the blind loyalty they receive from customers is so high that they could probably send out a mailer to all iPhone owners, claim they under-priced the product by $100, and demand everyone send in the extra cash. More than 50% would whip out their check books in an effort to please Steve Jobs as quickly as possible. Their next step would be to visit these forums and chastise anyone who didn't send their money in.

As other companies release very capable products that have that magic mix of features & style but also show respect for their customers, Apple's fan base will erode. At that point they'll either need to change tactics or simply watch their customer base diminish. People who support Apple on this one aren't necessarily stupid, just brainwashed lemmings.

Excellent post, really liked your 100 USD example, that really is what happens with some people here.

You bought the 1st gen iPhone with the knowledge that there was no MMS and there was a change it'd never come. You were fine with that, so don't get angry because of something you weren't supposed to get.

Seriously, that's just like "I'm signing this plan with 500 call minutes." and than say one year later "I want 1000 call minutes, this is not fair."

And over here, in NL, T-Mobile (official iPhone carrier in NL) is asking an half euro per MMS.

That is a retarded comparison. It's more like this, "I signed up for a plan with 500 minutes" and then one year later "Ok we are giving all customers on the 500 minute plan an extra 500 minutes!! But ONLY if you have a phone that is really new!! If your phone is old you don't get the extra 500 minutes!!"

And other people saying that he bought the 2g with X features and no MMS so it doesn't matter, well what about the 3G? I don't remember it coming with MMS.

Excellent post, like you are reading my mind ;)

I agree, but.. damn. Upgrade to a 3g, at least. They’re like $50-100 now.. and much better than the original iPhone.
Plus $10-$15 more per month ($10-data, $15-data+messaging). That's $240-$360 more over the 2 year contract length.

Extremely short sighted to just look at the phone price.

This probably all comes down to cost to Apple.

Every platform that they develop new functionality for requires them to expend additional resource. If they stop adding features to the original iPhone then they don't need to spend as long testing against that platform. Testing and supporting something (even something very simple) can be very expensive.

If the cost isn't worth the benefit (it won't stop them attracting new customers or adversely affect sales for example) then they probably wouldn't go ahead with it. Apple are a business, and it's all about making money. If you can make a bit more by dropping something or cutting a corner, then why wouldn't they?

If Apple thought that this was going to unduly affect them and lose them money long term, I am sure they would have added it.

Oh shutup. The iPhone has been out over 2 years. Why youre still using it I have NO IDEA. Your contract should have ended right?

All of the 2G iPhone users have some options:

1. Deal with it and continue to use your 2G iPhone.
2. Upgrade to the 3G or 3GS iPhone.
3. Drop the iPhone and switch to a different phone - Pre, Touch Pro 2, N97, etc.

Phones can last for 10 years if you take care of them

Really? Would you use a 10 year old computer? Will you still be using your phone in 10 years from now? Chances are it won't even be compatible with the technology of that time.

I'm sure people are aware of their options but they still have a right to complain. If everybody kept quiet about their issues then nothing would get fixed or updated.

I personally wouldn't keep a phone for any more than about 3 years, but a lot of people who don't care about the latest and greatest technology make their stuff last a long time.

The only thing I hear in here that isn't the OP is a bunch of elitest whiny ****-eating b**ches. The OP comes forth with a completely valid argument, and you guys, like children with the new toy, tout "Oh baww get a new one".

Well here's the facts. This is an apple product, and like Tiger or Leopard, just because Snow Leopard is out now doesn't mean fixes and upgrades aren't supported for the old ones (Safari, iWork and iLife still work with this "ancient" tech) so why doesn't MMS work for the new iPhones?

You all need to ****ing grow up and stop being elitest pieces of **** because thats a primary reason people don't go apple - because although the community is helpful, they are also pompous little ********s.

Upgrade upgrade upgrade CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME THE MACHINE MOVES YOU YOU DO NOT MOVE THE MACHINE

ok so the point was made by the OP, but why act like a 7 year old over it? at least try n be a grown up, they would never seriously read your email.

I think that this is most likely a AT&T issue, in that they have spent the last 3 1/2 months updating their servers, and networks to allow for the extra data that will transferred by people using the original iphone. I dont even use MMS and im in the UK so im not bothered at all really by this- it doesnt affect me.

Seriously people take a chill pill- i'd personally complain to AT&T if i was a US iPhone user..
calm, thought out rant out. lol

It's not a AT&T issue because ALL 2G's are having this problem, worldwide, not just in America. Apple could have easily added whatever was needed in the 3.0 FW just like they did with the 3G(S), but they chose not too so people who want MMS will be forced to buy a newer iPhone. When I used WinMo smart phones M$ didn't treat the users like this, you could put any new upgrade on any phone, no matter how old as long as it met the requirements. There is no way the 2G doesn't meet the requirements to send a lousy MMS.

You can complain yto AT&T and they will turn around and direct you to apple rightfully so. The is. 100% apple issue. This is not the first time apple screws over its users.

Apple has become a company that only cares if you buy new stuff otherwise they do not care about you. This is great for short twrm profits but backfires in the long term. It is a sad day the microsoft beats the crap out of apple here. If microsoft eas like apple all major support for XP would of been dropped in 2007 when vista was released. Apple does that woith their OS all the time.

I want to hear apple's bs reasoning for not supplying MMS to the 2G iPhones. It should be worth many laughs. Just like the blind fanboyism here. It is a rpim example of why apple fans arew thought of as being one of the dimmer light bulbs and people consider their infomation as worthless.
