Will do.

My wife is just about to finish her degree here in the UK so still has a 10% student discount available which made a wee bit of a difference.

Mentioned the 30Hz issue here. More exposure it gets the (slightly) greater chance it will get addressed:
Review: Dell 6K 32” Monitor U3224KDA — Possibly the best value for money monitor for your Mac
Interesting that he says comparing the 6k at 223 dpi with his 5K2K 40" at 140 dpi, that he doesn't notice a great deal of difference in text quality. So much so that he can show more code columns comfortably on the 40".

Not sure what to make of that. Maybe it's just his eyes? I notice text is much crisper on my 5k Ultrafine than my Dell 4K.

That's the thing. It's all personal. Some people have no issue with 4K and think those of us that "insist" on retina are money wasting snobs. I can say with full honestly that I wish I didn't notice it, but I do. Thus many $$$$ on monitors.

Agreed on this. Some people might not notice a difference, especially if their monitors are much further back on their desks. As someone who has a shallow desk, I absolutely can tell the difference and I would not want to go back to a 32" 4K (same PPI as the 40" 5k2k) now that I'm on a 27" 5K.

In the video, I could tell a great difference in the edges of the font in the wider monitor compared to the 6k text that was very smooth looking.

This may be a stupid question, but just allow me to ask. For Apple monitors, I know I can just walk into an Apple store and take a look. Are there shops that I can take a look of this Dell 6K monitor? Let's say, for example, in London.

I don't know about London, but our mega electronics stores in Berlin do not even have any 32" monitors on display and you can only order 4K models from 2020 for ridiculous prices. Retail shopping is pretty much dead, but you can look at the newest Apple devices everywhere.

I am fairly confident that if you want to see it in person, you will need to order it and then just rely on the Return Policy should you decide it is not for you.

The U3224KB is very much considered a "corporate/enterprise" monitor by Dell so I cannot think of any retail location that would have one on display.

A few more thoughts, now that I've used the monitor for a while:

  • Its brightness, while on paper not capping out as high as the display in my iMac Pro (500 nits) or AW2127D gaming monitor (600 nits), is still plenty bright and poses no issues for usage in a room with a lot of natural light coming in. The increased contrast of the panel and matte finish likely help for this.
  • The presence sensor is cool, if a bit unnerving at first. I didn't even know it had a presence sensor until I noticed my Mac was magically waking up when I sat down at my desk. This feature can be disabled if it's not desired.
  • Its matte coating is closer to a semigloss than matte. With a pure white screen there's a slight snowfield effect when looking at it dead-on, but it's not bad. I wouldn't have noticed if I weren't looking for it. It does get a bit stronger with extreme off-axis viewing angles, however.
  • Out of the box, color is great. I have yet to calibrate it but visibly, it's a much closer match to the iMac panel and 16" M1 Pro MBP panel than my old Thunderbolt Display is.
  • Sharpness is of course excellent. Unlike 27" 2560x1440, I cannot make out pixels at normal usage distance (~25"/63.5cm) and at 2x UI scaling there's no smudged letterforms or 1px lines, just like on 27" retina iMacs, ASDs, etc.
  • The webcam captures nice detail but its color is a bit odd compared to the MBP camera. This is highly dependent on light sources, though — if I had to guess they probably tuned it to look best in office environment lighting (e.g. overhead fluorescent/LED).
  • Speakers are a step above those I've heard in any non-Apple monitor, but aren't anything special. Perfectly fine for general usage though.
  • The fact that the Dell monitor utility has a macOS version is a pleasant surprise, but the installer refuses to let me install it on my Intel iMac and it won't run if manually extracted from the installer package. Works perfectly on the M1 Pro MBP, though… I guess this is the beginning of Intel Macs getting put on the back burner when it comes to support from third parties. This isn't really a big deal though since most of the settings it offers are surfaced in the monitor OSD.
  • Its joystick-based OSD is nicer than the old button-based setups that used to be more common.
  • Monitor wakeup time is not lightning speed, but not too slow either.
  • Bezels are a bit large compared to my AW2127D gaming monitor, but a massive improvement coming from an iMac and Thunderbolt Display.
  • Compared to 27" monitors, the extra screen real estate offered by the 32" size paired with 6k resolution is very welcome for IDE usage. In Xcode a four pane setup (file tree | code editor | code editor | inspector) fits much more comfortably with less line wrapping.
  • It's great that this monitor has standard 100x100mm VESA mounting without any special adapter.

Are you sure about that? If you do choose the option too turn it off then for me it disables the camera completely).

Ahh nice catch, yeah, it doesn't seem like the two can be enabled/disabled independently. Seems like something that might be fixable in a firmware update.

I'm hoping so as that is something I'd appreciate. Plus using the camera touch control on the LH bottom to disable the camera doesn't turn off the presence either....

My guess is it is an Apple Silicon native app and not Universal.

Where is the setting for the presence sensor? My camera is not working, perhaps that's why. I turned on quick wake but that did nothing.

Can anyone who has the Dell and an ASD connected to the same machine comment on whether they are experiencing any issues with windows resizing or moving around when the Mac wakes up? One thing I like about my multiple ASD set up is that the window locations and sizes are very stable.

Thanks in advance.

Note: I don't want to run any third party monitor tools.

I have to resize them when moving items from each side which is annoying. I guess because they are different size monitors. The screens remain stable coming out of sleep, no resizing is needed. I use Windows at work and when I switch to the smaller monitor it resizes down to fit the smaller screen. This does not happen on the ASD screen. Though Windows does not size up when switching a screen from the smaller monitor to the bigger monitor.

Thanks. So when the computer wakes back up the windows are in the same places and the same sizes. Right?

Also what Mac are you using?

Thanks again. This would be a frivolous purchase for me and I want to make sure I'm going to be totally thrilled.

I am using a Mac Studio and also a Surface Pro for work.

It is due to the different native resolutions (6K vs. 5K) which means the windows change size as they are moved between windows. I used to have the same when I had a 27" 1080p display connected to my iMac 5K and why I went to 2560x1440 so the (effective) native resolution was identical and windows would stay the same size.

That makes sense.

Just watched this video. 100% guarantee this will wobble on my desk. There's a reason to pay the Apple taxes. You get what you pay for.

What desk have you got? This monitor is sitting rock solid on my sturdy desk. Zero wobble :)
