Your comment about 4K doesn't make sense. If you run a 4K 27 inch display at native resolution (using an unscaled 2160p mode), then the UI objects are too small….

That’s 100% dependent on the person. I run my 5k iMac at native resolution without issues.

I love good display and for me image quality is the most important priority in a monitor. if I had the money I would take the XDRs
I totally understand your point of view, we live in front of monitors and the quality is a must but different users have different needs
(Un)lucky XDR costs are so far from my budget that I can concentrate on the accessories :D

I'm confused, native resolution on the 5K iMac is the default setting? That is no scaling and appears like 2560x1440.

Screenshot 2022-05-02 at 13.44.03.png

On the larger scaling, you can get that up to 3200x1800. Are you saying the default setting is too small?

Under the ‘Display’ tab, hold down the OPTION key while you press on the ‘Scaled’ button to reveal all available screen resolution options for the display.

This is what you'll see for a 5k display and you can choose its native resolution of 5120x2880

Native would be running it at literally its native resolution without any scaling of any kind. 5120x2880. You know when everything gets SUPER tiny.

?. There are some websites that get a bit small but I have a button on my mouse that triggers smart zoom so it's easy to use that if things get to small browsing the web. UIs are fine and I don't have a problem with them in different applications.

I'm stuck using a 34" ultra-wide 3440x1440 display while I wait for my ASD (or if I decide on a different monitor) and I hate it. Everything is huge. I bought this monitor for my gaming PC where it's great for that use case, but not for my every day monitor.

The 2560x1440 mode is also native resolution because it's a retina/HiDPI mode where everything is drawn twice as wide and twice as tall.

So you use 5K non-retina mode, and when things get too small, you use the app's zoom feature instead of macOS's HiDPI feature. And maybe the font sizes you choose in apps such as the Finder are not the smallest font sizes?

Interesting. I am getting p***ed off waiting for the ASD and have been looking at alternates. The curved monitors were one option. Are they terrible with the Mac? Every time I look at alternates like the Samsung M8 or the Huawei Mateview, I see compromises.

There isn't anything wrong with the monitor itself and the Mac Studio works perfectly with it (even wakes up every time which I'm surprised at). I just dislike the lower resolution for the everyday tasks (work, photo editing etc). If I was to get another ultra-wide for the everyday stuff I'd go with a 5k2k to get some of the resolution back.

For gaming it's the perfect resolution. Just to be specific it's an Alienware AW3420DW I picked a couple of years ago now. 120hz and P3 color so a very decent monitor for general use as well.

I've never changed the font sizes in the finder as far as I remember (the iMac is packed up ready to give to someone else so I can't go play with it).

The smart zoom is really nice... I have it tied to the middle mouse button so if I'm browsing a page that is too small I just click it and it zooms the page perfectly. One more click and it goes back to normal. I do a lot on photo forums and I like viewing photos at a non scaled resolution, but sometime the text is a bit small so this is the best of both worlds for me.

Like I mentioned menus etc don't bother me as being small, maybe because I'm in those apps all the time and I'm familiar enough I don't need to really read the menus. In office apps (word, excel) I'll use the zoom feature if needed and it's nice to be able to dial in the correct size without losing screen real estate with my other apps.

Maybe I'm just an extreme outlier, I figured there would be more people that would run without scaling.

What colour mode are you using? The only one of the implemented modes with balanced colours seems to be sRGB (though it seems to be less than 6500k).
Most of the others show over saturated red, the P3 mode even has a light greenish tint.

I just received a U2723QE today in the UK to replace my older Dell U2718Q. Have to say quite a gorgeous display. It does look almost the same as my U2718Q but better with more uniformity, better off-angle viewing with less colour shift and in general better colours and brightness.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but it works perfectly with Lunar allowing for full brightness control from macOS like a real Apple display would. Very happy :)
Have you had consistency issues with lunar fully working vs gamma only?

I'd say only 30% of the time does lunar allow full control and the rest it says its not compatible monitor.

What port are you plugged into also?

Thanks!

If it's mainly the brightness control you're looking for, I can recommend MonitorControl. It works well on all the external displays I've tested on, including the Dell U2723QE.

I am plugged into the monitor using its USB-C port, the one that supplies 90 Watts of power at the same time to my laptop. I've also used the monitor via Display Port hooked up to a Thunderbolt 3 dock and I found Lunar to have total control of the brightness of the monitor at all times via both connections.

I've not had any issues with it, no errors, no incompatibility messages etc

Please apologize if I'm off topic but in my country (Italy) both monitors are impossible to find, both Amazon and Dell.
On Dell site the delivery date is estimated for July!!!
All the Ultrasharp monitors have long waiting list...
Do you have any idea why is this possibile?

This all sounds like a global issue centred on the factories in Shanghai which went into a severe lockdown recently.

Apple has delays across the line on products. Any complicated product like laptops, screens etc are all delayed.

It should start to improve quite quickly though as we get into the summer.

Oh god, you are right, I forgot everything is made in china, I hope the covid disappears ASAP so people can restart to live without any lockdown

They are unobtanium at the moment. I was looking at a late June ship date when I looked at the Dell website in late April and no one else had stock that I could find here in the UK.

So to get mine quickly I gave Dell Business a phone call and spoke with an advisor as I'd be using this display for work and they were able to not only place a faster order for me but get me one delivered the very next day.

If you have the option to use your job with their VAT number and such to procure product then that may be a shortcut. The advisor I spoke to indicated they have a lot of stock specifically earmarked for business customers.

dell business is useful for many reasons but my organization refuses to subscribe to it, I really don't understand

I’m in the UK and my U3223QE had an estimated delivery date of 25 July but it was shipped out yesterday.

Kinda nervous about this scaling stuff in macOS though.

Don't be. I have the U3223QE and text is absolutely sharp at 2560x1440. I have my monitor 85cm away and I cannot see pixels. But I did play with Apple font smoothing a bit. On the M1 Mac mini I have it set at 1, and on the Intel Mac mini 2018 I have it set at 0. Believe it or not, Intel and M1 process font smoothing differently.
