The question is who’s expectations are we talking about here?
Analysts. The do that for every company/product. It’s literally their job. This is the first year Apple failed short.

i dont think they are killing the golden goose.

1) while the XS starts from 999, the XR is 750, which is rather competitively priced. if you look past the LCD screen, which still looks good, it's cheaper than pixel 3 and you get the iOS "benefits"

2) doesnt matter if the sales are stagnating or what, what apple is doing is price discrimination which maximises profit, and companies do this all the time

3) any company can justify price differences by making a superior product or product differentiate. quality, iOS, their ecosystem, integration across platforms and devices. how much is the question.

i dont think prices are the main problem for apple. They have always charged a premium, but i feel that the case for the premium has weakened over the years.

a) they are increasingly making profits from their services rather than hardware sales, so if their entry level devices are priced too high, then it will be tough to attract new users. maybe it isnt their intention to do so, but i wonder where will the growth be from then

b) apple is no longer that different from or superior to other manufacturers and OS developers. i feel windows and android have improved a lot, and some of apple's strengths, e.g. product quality, have also become suspects. look at their recent problems like their butterfly keyboard and XS' reception issue. i personally also take issue with their attention to detail on their hardware. The need for so many dongles is also hugely frustrating.

i) for earphones, why do I have 3.5mm on my mac laptops, lightning for my iphones, and usb c for ipad pro?
ii) for charging, why is my iphone still using lightning but my ipad pro and mac laptop using usb c?
iii) why do i have a usb b charging cable but my mac laptop only has usb c ports?

Sure, XR starts at $750 but what you get is the “poor man’s” iPhone.

Until 2016 People could get the latest/greatest iPhone for $650. Your choice was mainly large display vs smaller factor.

Apple now segregates it’s consumers to “rich” and “poor”.

I have bought an iPhone each year on launch day since the iPhone 3g. This year I only did it to get the larger screen of the Max. Next year I plan to skip. A better camera at this point doesn't really warrant and upgrade. When we get 5g (and its available in my area) or the notch is removed I'm in. I might also change my mind if the phone came in black not that I hate Space Gray or you can even see much of it when the phone has a case. The new iPad's make me wish we had something like and iPhone 5 design again though.

Same here. I've bought iPhones in 2011, 2014 and 2017. And for 2017 I barely even looked at the X; I saw the price and bought an 8.

I only bought the X because I was tired of carrying a phone the size of the 7+ everyday. Now that I have it, I would only buy the Xr if I decided to switch to T-Mobile. Otherwise, stay with my current phones.

I agree with most of the comments and sentiments here, last year I bought a Android phone (LG V30). It is really a good piece of hardware, the OS is good too. BUT. Apple is such a tightly integrated system from software to hardware one must place a value on it. Has Apple become too greedy? Yes I believe so. However, the integration of the hardware and software is why they can charge an "apple premium" price structure.

Will I get an iPhone again? Maybe.

We’ve seen this time and time again, most of the times analysts are wrong in their predictions. The bottom line for any business is profit and margin. Apple has been killing it in the last few years.

Apple now segregates it’s consumers to “rich” and “poor”.

I think the level of “rich” and “poor” is a very subjective thing. I don’t see a £1000 device making anyone rich or poor. If people struggle to spend that amount then they need to sort out their lives first and not worry about a phone.

The actual issue is value for an individual rather than the price.

People don't need a new phone every year. People can't afford a $1200 phone every year.

Well, that's totally true, but inaccurate. I sold my X ($999) from last year for about $700. So, not considering sales tax, it's more like $200-$300.

Now if I had sprung for last year's X (256gb) at $1200, probably would have only received about $100 more, making the upgrade cost around $300-$400.

The only way it's going to cost $1200 every year is if you throw you old phone off a boat or lose it.

I'm guessing these resale price above are only value cost to the preorder date.

Apple is offering $525 on my X. Makes even Max "just" $700.

Unless the figures come out and show it had great sales like they do every year?
The figures came out and they missed the expectations. Seen AAPL lately?

In fact they know they screw up so bad that they decided to stop reporting iPhone unit numbers sold in the future.

They sold what 46 million units last quarter? Hardly screwing up. People are still buying these devices at high volume.

This is the first year ever that iPhones haven't gone out stock within hours after the pre-orders started. But maybe it wasn’t that iPhones didn’t sell well, maybe it was that Apple was not selling iPhones anymore.

The new models may share the same name, and OS, but are in so many ways different. Different displays, different focus(maybe the first time phones are not thinner and lighter), different authentication l(FaceID vs TouchID), different UX(swipe up vs button), stagnant design, no longer selling last uear’s model, different marketing(for the first time we have excsessive high-end and low-end), different release dates, and most of all different price points.

In many ways 8+ was the last of the iPhones.

Apple seems to be in confusion, making consumers confused and sales numbers show that. They are still doing well in profit, but stock market noticed that something is not going well with the Goose.

The iPhone 7 or 8, I can’t remember which, was said to have been the best selling iPhone for Apples last financial year, so if your theory is correct, and let’s be honest here we hope it is with these prices forever going North.. then the XR will easily outsell the XS.
I suspect it will, I have one and am damn glad I didn’t spend £200 to £350 more for the XS!

But we will now never know as Apple has seen to it nobody but them and them alone will actually know the sales figures.

Imagine how much Apple will charge for a iOS device with foldable screen?..

Could not agree more. I used to be a serial upgrade years ago. The costs are so out of control I’ll be using my 8 until it is unrepairable. Then I’ll try and find another 8 on the used market. I’ll put my money into my Macs. :apple:

I mean some random analyst somewhere randomly “expects” something and apple is in trouble for not meeting that?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I stopped with the 6, waiting until last year to get the 8 plus but then wanted to try out the non home button model this year, with the second gen Face ID. So got the Xs max. Not sure when I will upgrade next.

It’s an old Yogi Berra quote. He was an American baseball player, manager, and character.

Wow...Yogi Berra knew about Apple Stores? That is pretty amazing.

No they didn't. They exceeded all expectations for revenue and profit -- the only metrics that matter.

Good point. 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016 for me. The first three on 'contract', but now SIM-only. This makes the price much more 'real' - so will probably stick with my '7' for a few years yet . . . .

Lol, I don’t remember what place Yogi was talking about, but yeah ‘Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded’.

And yes, Apple beat the street and the stock went down. That’s the secret signal to buy. I don’t know where people get their 100% wrong info from like Apple missing expectations. They either don’t care or have a dog in the race.

So true. Equally, Apple are trapped: they can't sell them cheaper or they lose their 'premium' cachet. Same goes for their Macs. But so long as we keep buying enough to sustain 'sufficient' market share their business model works.
