17" MBP slip

A friend of mine allegedly knows someone at Apple who claimed that the 15" and 17" MBP slips are due to a shortage of screens. I'm not sure I buy this, since it seems that NO 17" mbp's are shipping today (or on time). I wouldn't be surprised if those with Nov 8th ship dates get slip emails tomorrow. (edit)On the other hand, it would explain things, too. Keep in mind this is third-hand knowledge from an unofficial source. It's only slightly more valid than mud-at-wall speculation.(/edit)

I'm on the phone with Apple now, speaking to a supervisor. I've made it clear that, based on estimated ship dates that were sworn to me to be as good as set in stone, I've made plans, and now due to the slip, I won't see my MBP for another 2-3 weeks. He's refunded my shipping (big f#$%ing deal), but it doesnt sound like they're willing to do anything.

I am really tweaked at this. This is the kind of equipment shortage that they would HAVE to have known about sooner. They were slipping EU shipments this morning at 2-3AM PST, they could've sent us the same emails at the same time and saved themselves a lot of anger on the part of their customers. I don't mind being slipped as much as I mind being slipped AT THE LAST MINUTE, and with NO explanation. Had I been told last night this would've been totally different, I was told this afternoon that my laptop had been built and was waiting for FedEx pickup.

I am still considering whether to just buy another Dell, or if I really want to switch to Apple. It's been a long time since I've gotten this piss-poor of service from a vendor (without recourse anyway, usually when Juniper or NetApp dicks me around like this I can have someone executed).

I'm as disappointed as anyone about having to wait, but geeze, is there no patience at all in the modern world? For Apple to co-ordinate multiple manufacturers and get a new product out, shipping it all over the world according to a tight schedule is a darned hard thing to do.

it's interesting that a company based on information can't let their customers know a delay is coming any sooner that the expected ship date:confused:

Quit making excuses for such a horrible company. Apple made promises without having units on hand. They weren't ready to go and they told us they were. I'm flying out of here on the 16th and may not be back until the following Sunday and so then I won't be able to get it until Monday. Apple sucks. Period.

I think most of our experiences with the 17" MBP prove that we are very patient people. What I personally can't tolerate is being deceived. Apple waited until the last minute to communicate something that many of us suspected for at least the last several days. They should have been candid with their customers.

I also just received a new ship date of the 14th. I placed my order for a 17" at 6am PST on the 24th. I cannot believe the computer will not be shipping until at least 3 weeks after ordering.

I also cannot believe no mention of this delay was made until the end of the business day on the date the computer was suppose to ship. I would not be nearly as upset if Apple took steps to ensure I knew the status of my order along the way.

Obviously Apple knew the computers would not be shipping on time. When I spoke with an Apple rep this morning I was assured my computer would ship today. I understand the rep had no more information to go by than I did, but assuming this guy is a representative of Apple, I was lied to.

This is terrible customer service and this is not the first time I've run into difficulty with Apple. I've never dealt with similar issues when buying items from other high-end brands or retailers. When spending 3K on a computer, and for a company that claims it's products are top of the line, Apple has a long way to go.

Just thinking out loud here but I'm really concerned about the fact that not a single 17" MBP C2D glossy has surfaced ANYWHERE in the world. I'd feel better knowing some of you were receiving yours but the fact that Apple hasnt fulfilled a single order is really more concerning than anything else I can think of right now.

Actually that's not true, several people have received 15" glossy MBP c2d's.

This might sound a bit cold but they're claiming rumors of the new Macbook being announced soon. All I have to say is that they better ******* not announce a new laptop until all this mess is sorted out. I want every person responsible for Apple laptops working on catching up. If my MBP slips again because they're too busy producing and shipping MBs I may blow a gasket.

what I'm worry is due to delay and the rush will the qty of the 17" drop? result giving more problem like the 1st batch of MBP.

Cause since the 1st batch now look like apple concenrate on making the 15" first but they forsee wrongly that alot of 17" buyer are in fact waiting for the C2D to release before they are buying.

doubtful. Based on things I've heard, I dont think they have any 17" screens in stock. And they may have run out of 15" screens too. So they're just slipping everyone.

Arrggghh!!!

Called Apple today and the rep did a slip up and told me there is a battery and screen shortage on the 17" models. A reliable source that is a large Apple reseller informed me of the same thing. I guess 15" models will be all we see in the stores until after Thanksgiving. This bites!!!

I meant to say that not a single 17" glossy MBP C2d has surfaced yet. Changed my original post. Good catch though.

Something critical must have happened to delay all our orders. Obviously just an opinion but this is more than Apple not being prepared for demand. If they were, some of us would be posting on our new 17" MBP C2D at this very moment. The fact that none of us are is what's bugging me the most.

Not just glossy that hasn't shipped, no 17" has. And what is really going to bug me is when i get the same email that you guys have been getting on the 10th when mine is supposed to ship. I am almost certain i will since you guys are ahead in the queue so why can't apple send me the email now when they obviously know rather than waiting until after it was supposed to happen. not happy jan

Talked to apple customer service...got to a supervisor...got $20 credit back on my card for the inconvenience. Also, asked why there was a delay...he hesitated and said he "speculated" supply and demand issues. So perhaps a screen shortage or too many people ordered 17" macbook pro's...but in either case, wouldn't we be notified (and wouldn't apple know) way ahead of this date that they wouldn't be able to make the deadline?
