I'm wondering if Mac has ever had this happen before, a major release having to be delayed. Not trying to make an excuse for them, but if they never have, maybe they are completely naive and clueless as to what proper customer relations is. Basically, they have no plan for this scenerio. We are the unwitting victims of their learning curve, and Mac is not even in kindergarten or Headstart, or even Sesame Street, but Teli-Tubbies and Barney the Purple dinosaur.
There have been other instances where there was a long time between announcement and actual ship. The original 17" PBs, I think, were announced 7-10 weeks before they shipped. Those who ordered them knew at the time though that there'd be a wait.
Worse, I think, was some iteration of the PowerMac G5, which took some
months to ship (unexpectedly). I'm glad I wasn't in the market for one of those then.
It's good to remember that, in fact, Apple is at the moment only <24 hrs late from the latest time when we could have expected initial shipment. I ordered at 6:30a PDT on Oct 24, and was given a ship date of Nov 7 and a delivery of Nov 14. Now it's a ship date of 'on or before Nov 14', so with my upgraded expedited shipment, I can expect it (maybe) by Nov 17, which is only 3 days past my original delivery date. Whatever. The sky's not going to fall down.
I'm excited to get it, and waiting is annoying, sure, but I certainly don't know what the issue over there is. Someone mentioned the possibility of screen or battery supply issues. Both of those make sense, esp. the latter. And since I don't know how Apple's supply chain works, who knows, they might be hostage to component suppliers' problems as well (millions of recalled batteries have to be replaced in this same time frame).
I've never been in manufacturing, but the thought of these amazingly intricate machines, assembled from countless parts coming from multiple sources, that actually work as expected when you take it out of the box, now that's a miracle. I'm willing to give them some slack...
