I've seen the 17" MBPs C2 in stock at my local Apple store - they even have them on display! Yet mine (custom configured) won't ship for another two weeks.

and your apple store is from where? I can't see any in my local apple store.

The apple stores in the bay area, claim to have the 17 inch C2D on display.. yet when you check "about this MAC" you soon realize that the written sign (adjacent to the computer) is NOT correct.. What you are actually looking at is a 17 inch 2.16 ....

go figure.. it has even fooled the employess at the APPLE store..

It's very disappointing, yes, but - NO company was shipping 2.33gHz C2D's until the last couple weeks. That's pretty much the only new major component in these, so it could very well have to do with the delay. The screens haven't changed (unless I missed something major).

I was at MacWorld the day they released the 500mHz Titanium Powermac. Ordered the next day. Played the waiting game (calling dealers all over the place waaay too often) and it was FIVE weeks before I could find one. (Southern California). It was also a month before the first MBP's (2.16gHz, 15") were around. I'm amazed they had the C2D's anywhere the first day.

Fortunately, I don't work, so I've been ready to hop in the car and make the 90 mile drive to pick up the new machine - as soon as I get the call.... :) Normally, they only hold for 2 hrs, but they'll "bend" the rules so I can make the drive. Sorta like being on "alert" for 2 weeks now. Nice to have the "support group" here, though.

So what do you all think?

Still haven't got an email yet. But I ordered on the 24th. My original ship date was the 7th. But today I got checked it before the site went down and it said that ship date was the 8th.

So I'm just curious what you all think? Why haven't I got the email yet? I didn't order till about 10:30 at night. And why would my ship date just be updated randomly?

I'm wondering if Mac has ever had this happen before, a major release having to be delayed. Not trying to make an excuse for them, but if they never have, maybe they are completely naive and clueless as to what proper customer relations is. Basically, they have no plan for this scenerio. We are the unwitting victims of their learning curve, and Mac is not even in kindergarten or Headstart, or even Sesame Street, but Teli-Tubbies and Barney the Purple dinosaur.

There have been other instances where there was a long time between announcement and actual ship. The original 17" PBs, I think, were announced 7-10 weeks before they shipped. Those who ordered them knew at the time though that there'd be a wait.

Worse, I think, was some iteration of the PowerMac G5, which took some months to ship (unexpectedly). I'm glad I wasn't in the market for one of those then.

It's good to remember that, in fact, Apple is at the moment only <24 hrs late from the latest time when we could have expected initial shipment. I ordered at 6:30a PDT on Oct 24, and was given a ship date of Nov 7 and a delivery of Nov 14. Now it's a ship date of 'on or before Nov 14', so with my upgraded expedited shipment, I can expect it (maybe) by Nov 17, which is only 3 days past my original delivery date. Whatever. The sky's not going to fall down.

I'm excited to get it, and waiting is annoying, sure, but I certainly don't know what the issue over there is. Someone mentioned the possibility of screen or battery supply issues. Both of those make sense, esp. the latter. And since I don't know how Apple's supply chain works, who knows, they might be hostage to component suppliers' problems as well (millions of recalled batteries have to be replaced in this same time frame).

I've never been in manufacturing, but the thought of these amazingly intricate machines, assembled from countless parts coming from multiple sources, that actually work as expected when you take it out of the box, now that's a miracle. I'm willing to give them some slack...

What I personally can't tolerate is being deceived. Apple waited until the last minute to communicate something that many of us suspected for at least the last several days. They should have been candid with their customers.

They may have been hoping to come through right up to the last minute. My prediction is they'll start coming through in the next couple of days, but only stated a week's delay to be conservative and avoid a 2nd delay.

Of course if they do take a full week to start shipping, I have to eat my words.

I must say, after all this, I really would love to wake up tomorrow.. to a surprise e-mail. Buuuut, the lesson I think we've all had to learn is that one must not be too optimistic with Apple. Or even.. one must not expect what Apple tells you to expect :p

3am. Yay.
Night folks.

I'm afraid I won't see my mbp until thanksgiving. Next week, in my opinion, wouild be a big step.

I've deployed new products and services for years so I have a bit of experience in this area. Missing dates is not a new phenom. That's why you typically pad your committment dates to account for slippage by vendors, etc. I've always done my best to under promise and over deliver. Its the best way to ensure a positive customer experience.

What happened here is the classic reversal; over-promise and under deliver resulting in a negative customer experience. Customers will forgive IF the end result is a superior product. Deliver anything less and you dont just lose one customer, you lose customer goodwill.

Based on years of experience, it is my opinion that apple had to see this coming. After all, this isnt their first time at bat. Should be intersting to see how the trades and the marketplace respond.

We regret to inform you that we must revise the previously estimated ship date for your Mac Book order. We now expect to ship your order by November 13th, 2006.

Thats a day earlier than they said yesterday, we are going in the right direction.

My mail says "by the 13th", web status still says 14th. I think some peoples mail also said the 14th, no idea why theres a difference though, could be that they all start shipping soon, and the 13th/14th dates are just to be sure.. (Staying kinda optimistic here. :))

No email here yet either... and my ship date is today, Nov 8.
FACT:
My delivery date (not estimated delivery date) has always been November 8 eventhough I ordered on the 24th.
FACT:
TWO DAYS before my delivery date my credit cards available credit was reduced by the amount of the order.

Just does not make sense. SOMEONE must have known on the 6th. that the 17 inchers were not going to be shipped the following day.

Not refreshing my widget anymore. Now checking my email every two seconds instead.

Order status accessed via the Canadian store remains down as well. I have not received a delay email yet.

I placed my 17" order, via the Canadian ADC store, within the first hour of the C2D release. I'm hoping (dreaming?) that maybe, just maybe, they will be shipping a batch.

I'll be giving them a call shortly if the order status page doesn't come back up.

Gavin.

New Products Coming ...

There's definitely something brewing. The store shows "We're busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly". Same thing happened prior to the C2D MBP announcement two weeks ago. Let's hope some additional news about the MBP's follows along with whatever else they'll be announcing today.

I concur that the latest delay is a bit frustrating and I plan on calling Apple later today to get some dispensation for this. They promised delivery by a certain date and that promise has been broken. But, I must say this too. I have waited very patiently for C2D MBP's to be released so waiting one more week or so is not going to be so bad.

The bad thing is the lack of honest information. All day yesterday the reps were saying on the phone that my computer would definitely ship. They had to know that there was a problem and they were not going to meet the deadline that they set.

I just want to know what the problem is. I want to know if it is really going to be resolved in the next week. I would like to be able to make an informed decision about how I need to proceed. I need this computer for work and have waited a long time to be able to switch from a PC laptop to a Mac. I thought my time had finally come.

Please just tell us what is going on Apple so we can make good decisions!

I assume the MB's are produced at different factories than the MBP's...? If not this (Them realeasing C2D MB's) is pretty stupid if they already have problems supplying us with MBP's..
Send out the 17"'ers now!

It's Offical ...

From the MacRumors front page:

"Apple announced the new Core 2 Duo MacBooks today..."

"The new MacBooks are available immediately through the Apple Store."

Wonder what the actual shipping time will be ...

If the reason for the delayed 17" is lack of batteries or LCD-panels, then there should be no problems in shipping the new Macbooks (except that we'd all be really annoyed ;) )
