Obviously you're not a golfer.
people, pay attention to the details.

the new c2d macbooks (1.8ghz and 2.0ghz c2d) do not even use the same chips as the MBP's (2.16ghz and 2.33ghz c2d) so the announcement of the new macbooks today is irrelevant to your 17" shipping on time. the delay has to do with something else.

do the MBP and the MB share any components other than the HD and RAM?

(admittedly the RAM could be an issue as some have theorized)

Just got this email after chatting to Apple... Originally I was meant to receive it on the 15th. :(

Thank you for calling Apple Computers. I understand that you received the below email to state that your goods would be delivered on the 13th of this month. I do regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstance that you should receive your order on or before the 22nd of November. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience caused.

I'm on the phone with Apple now, and she says that it's in manufacturing (being configured) and will ship tomorrow. I talked to someone with a really cute voice named Ashley, so it was hard to be mad at her. She also gave me $50 back, and before that I received a free shipping upgrade.

Apple.com home page now prominently displays the new Core 2 Duo based MacBooks. The U.S. store is still down.

I called Apple to check on my 17" order and I got a more or less standard response (unexpected high demand). My free standard shipping was upgraded to expedited shipping at no cost.

Oh well.
Mine has been pushed from Nov 7 ship to between Nov 9th and 14th.

I waited months for the release of the C2D MBPs...I suppose I can wait some more.

It's character building, right?

I also called and got free express shipping. I doesn't hurt to whine a little. I hope to get it before Thanksgiving so that I have a four-day weekend to play with it. I'm having it shipped to work, which is otherwise closed that Friday.

Free Shipping?!

I ordered mine on the morning of Oct 24th and was told last night that my order was delayed from Nov 7th to somewhere between Nov 9-14.

I spoke with a supervisor and was told it was due to an overwhelming demand in the product. Without ever being rude I told him that I could never get away with telling a client at the eleventh hours that I cannot meet their demands... after a bit more talk he offered me $100 (Canadian, as that's where I live) off my total purchase price.

I know that $100 doesn't really make that much of a difference when this thing is not that far off $4000 (w/tax and apple care) for me, but it sure beats the hell out of those people who are getting free shipping.

So now ask for the free upgrade of shipping :)
and i only got 50 because I got tired after 20 minutes on the phone, and a non-supervisor is only allowed to grant 50, whilst sup = 100.

maaah.
i just want my machine :(

The only reason there's an "overwhelming demand" is because the current supply is at zero (0). What does demand have to do with the fact that they haven't been able to ship even one of these things in the time frame they originally specified? Something else is going on that is causing the delay and Apple does not wish to share the information with anyone.

That's what I'm thinking too. Our unfortunate Timmywilly or whatever is however being fed the best lies. "300 machines have been delayed". Yea right, as if the others have shipped? Or, wait, they wanted him to think only 300 machines were ordered? If so I find it hard to believe demand is the reason for this delay. "Omg, 300 people ordered our new machine, and we can only make 15!! Dang". Somehow I don't think that's Apple anno 2006.
Anyway, indeed strange that not one has surfaced yet. That some delays occur is not strange, but I bet they would have started shipping if they had some.

Called Apple to check the status again since we have been unavailable to check online since early yesterday. The Apple representative told me that the expected ship date is the 9th to the 14th. Lets hope for the 9th.

Also I think a lot of the blame for the delay for the 17" MBP is the contracted OEM manufacture for Apple. I think Asustek makes the MBP and they may be spreading there-self a little thin. Then again, it is Apple's responsibility to set release dates.

Mine's Late As Well

I ordered the 17 inch with 2Gb of RAM. Today I get the notification that the November 7th ship date has slipped to November 14th, like others have here. This is my first Mac purchase - what's the next best step: call or email?

the voice of reason

Yeah, you're right. The sky won't fall. They're not that far off, and yes, we've all be a lot nuts about the whole thing. but i want my new toy NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!!!! :D

I just find it a little odd that the store is down on the day they released the most popular laptop i think we'll see for a while.
but things happen. and i suppose delaying the announcement isn't the best plan.

It is possible that the macbook has a higher priority over the MBP, especailly the 17". The volume on those is going to be much higher and they're in more direct competition with other pc vendors. let's face it, those of us who want the MBP can't really live with anything else except a mac. so they have us; we know it, they know it. they know we know they know it. :)

There have been other instances where there was a long time between announcement and actual ship. The original 17" PBs, I think, were announced 7-10 weeks before they shipped. Those who ordered them knew at the time though that there'd be a wait.

Worse, I think, was some iteration of the PowerMac G5, which took some months to ship (unexpectedly). I'm glad I wasn't in the market for one of those then.

It's good to remember that, in fact, Apple is at the moment only <24 hrs late from the latest time when we could have expected initial shipment. I ordered at 6:30a PDT on Oct 24, and was given a ship date of Nov 7 and a delivery of Nov 14. Now it's a ship date of 'on or before Nov 14', so with my upgraded expedited shipment, I can expect it (maybe) by Nov 17, which is only 3 days past my original delivery date. Whatever. The sky's not going to fall down.

I'm excited to get it, and waiting is annoying, sure, but I certainly don't know what the issue over there is. Someone mentioned the possibility of screen or battery supply issues. Both of those make sense, esp. the latter. And since I don't know how Apple's supply chain works, who knows, they might be hostage to component suppliers' problems as well (millions of recalled batteries have to be replaced in this same time frame).

I've never been in manufacturing, but the thought of these amazingly intricate machines, assembled from countless parts coming from multiple sources, that actually work as expected when you take it out of the box, now that's a miracle. I'm willing to give them some slack...

Delay caused by shortage of display screens?

A friend who ordered his 17" C2D MBP with glossy screen right after the announcement got his notification yesterday about the delay in shipping; he called and they are knocking $25 off his order and also sending him a wired keyboard (which he'll use with one of his other machines, I think). He asked the reason for the delay and was told that it was the display screens.... I suppose that's possible that they weren't prepared for the volume of orders for the 17" MBP and therefore didn't have enough display screens to put in the things?

I don't buy the screen excuse either. If they were simply short on screens I'm sure we would have heard of someone somewhere getting a 17 already and that simply hasn't happened. Also, how much different is this screen from the one that was in the original 17" MBP? There's something else going here ... I smell a conspiracy :D

the 17" machines are hiding behind the grassy knoll.

Now that's funny!

On a serious note, the store seems to be back up again and ship times are unchanged for the MBP, while the new C2D MacBooks are showing 1-3 days shipping times.
