God why do Android updates always end up at "android is upgrading, optimising app -- of --" and your sat looking at your phone for 30 minutes !!!

Is that what Google plans to get rid of with that "seamless update" thing they introduced at Google I/O?

I'm with Tmobile and my Note 5 came with earbuds.
Thanks I couldn't remember if it did or not! :)

Or at least cover that graphic with a better one to provide a smoother transition. Maybe just a moving bar across the screen

I am a long time iPhone user but did have a HTC M8 a few years ago. Was happy with it. I am looking at moving back to Android but am really struggling to decide between the 10 or the S7 or even S7e or even wait for the next Nexus phones.

This thread is helping somewhat and am verging towards the 10. Build quality and looks. I do like the idea of IP68 on the S7 though. What are Samsung and HTC like with updates? Obviously being a iPhone user I am used to Apple providing me with regular ish updates. I don't like the idea of when a new model comes out the manufacturer abandons you and have to go looking at rooting for XDA rom for a back door update.

What is Andoird pay like in the UK? I do use Apple Pay all the time and rate it very highly.

Thanks

Sadly no Android or Apple or Samsung pay in Ireland so have no experience with any of them :(

Ok. What is your experience with system updates from either Samsung or HTC ?
System updates have been very quick on the HTC 10, i have had my device around 3-4 weeks or so and I am already on my 3rd android firmware update.

The S7e hasn't been too shabby either. I'm running an unbranded UK device but am a little behind others who are on the May/June security update in other countries but I expect I'll be updated to the June security update soon.

Now these are fix updates of course and security updates. They are not major android updates. The test of improved updates will be when Google push put 6.0.2 or jump to Android N.

From what I understand, they're talking what they learned from Chrome OS Android bringing it to Android. Can't wait.

Since the update ... Battery seems to be better ... will tell tomorrow properly but so far I'm at 87% with 1 hour SOT. At that rate it would easily get 6 hours SOT, but it's too soon to tell, but looks promising anyway.

The HTC 10 is a work of art, truly on par with Apple high end quality, and shaped so well, rests comfortably in your hand with ease. Plus it's the closest UI to stock Android, not much bloat and crap apps like Samsung. And HTC is very good with updates, pretty quickly.

Yeah the S7 Edge is "the it" device right now. Wouldn't even think of the normal S7, the Edge is so close in size anyways, plus has a HUGE battery. And is very beautiful design, with the best camera, and great display tech. But it's Samsung. They suck at updates. Typicallly like 6+ months, sometimes 9 months for the next Android version. And it runs the abomination known as Touchwiz :(. which poops all over Material Design.

The next Nexus phones are rumored to be HTC's, with rumored sizes of 5" and 5.5" models. Should be out in October.

If you want a new phone right now, IMO get the 10. Or wait for the HTC Nexus's see what they are like ?

I do think the S7 Edge, hardware wise is the best smartphone today, but with some caveats; Touchwiz has gotten better, but could still be a lot better and take up less memory and not be a system hog, and why so many copycat apps that Google already has stock apps for ? And Samsung taking care of a device after one year, they start to fall behind and just want you to upgrade to the newer phone. But... I have to admit, the screen display is the BEST, the camera is the BEST, waterproof is GREAT, dustproof is GREAT. S7 Edge overall hardware package is a frigging awesome phone. Just too bad they don't make a GPE version running stock Android N Beta 3, that would be a nerds wet dream.

I can only really recommend the S7 Edge if you own a pool, or always at the local pool and swim a lot, or hang out at the beach all the time, and play around the ocean or lake. If you do that, then for sure the S7 Edge is hard to beat. Otherwise get the 10.

After day one:
Wish there was an iMessage equivalent (hangouts still isn't close)
Chrome Dev is really good
Using BT again, the wired headphones I have aren't working too well for me
Can't judge battery life, was doing an awful lot and it lasted
Turned off animations, but even without it had no stutter
Google Now responds better than Siri

Allo and Duo, IMO, is google's answer to iMessage and Facetime. I believe it eventually will be cross platform, and if that is the case, it will be the superior platform.

Hangouts is great, but a little too techy. Allo and Duo look to bring simplicity and functionality.

Yeah, looking forward to Allo and Duo. But right now, there's nothing. D:

Oh, forgot to mention how much I'm liking the fingerprint sensor.

I confirm it is there but VERY quick in Android N :)

But people will be complaining now that apps are slower to launch at first, because it is JIT compilation on first launch.

Is that 1hour SOT at 87% on Wifi?

Purely just curious, have you used TouchWiz of late? Except for the duplicate apps, most of the things you're concerned about TW has been remedied. The memory management thing is no longer an issue (I forget the number, but you can have 8-10 apps running without refreshing now, whereas before, it was a measly 5-6 or something?). So the memory/system hog concern is really squashed.

The latest TouchWiz on top of Marshmallow is a brilliant combination of TW's useful features, and MM's stability and speed. I almost never experience lag, never had apps crashing or closing on me, no weird instability issues or hiccups. The software experience has been insanely smooth and reliable.

I definitely agree Samsung could take a page out of HTC and eliminate duplicate apps, and I definitely think Samsung should wrestle the carriers for less carrier bloatware (especially for those poor ATT/Verizon users. Ugh). But memory management is no longer an issue.

Disclaimer: I recommended to the OP the HTC 10, too. I think it'll be the better fit for him. So, again, just curious. TouchWiz really has come a long way, even from an S6, which was my daily driver before, the improvements to TouchWiz are very noticeable.

Coming from my SE? Much better, more accurate.

Coming from a 6S Plus? Seems slightly better, actually.

I'm not even covering up the entire sensor and it's working. Never was able to do that on my iPhone.

Super happy you're enjoying your HTC 10, dude. Had a feeling it'd be the right fit for you.

Your impressions are making me look forward to an HTC made Nexus later this year even more.

Glad I went with it. Thanks for the advice.

I will say, though, that I had to re-pair my BT headphones because they were dropping audio. Didn't make it a trusted device and it seems to have gotten better. Let's see if the troubled Apple Music is also drop free after the change.

The big benefit of the HTC 10 over the S7/S7 Edge is the dev support. The US-regions S7/S7 Edge phones are incredibly locked down in terms of root and bootloader (some saying that the bootloader is basically impossible to crack without a Qualcomm insider due to the secure-boot). The HTC 10 has full dev support and HTC itself helps supply the tools to achieve Unlocked Bootloaders for instance.

Root and an unlocked bootloader may not seem important but they really can do amazing things (seamless ad-blocking in browser and games, battery optimizations, etc).

Excellent points. Unlocked and open bootloader's and allowing root is a HUGE BIG DEAL. ABSOLUTE DEAL MAKER in my phone buying decisions.

How anyone can buy and support a locked down phone boggles my mind. I could never do that in good conscience, and out of principle would never give a compan my money.

Kudos for HTC for still bring development friendly.

Look at what root and Xposed did for my LGG5, allowing me to get 7h Screen On time.
