Excellent points. Unlocked and open bootloader's and allowing root is a HUGE BIG DEAL. ABSOLUTE DEAL MAKER in my phone buying decisions.

How anyone can buy and support a locked down phone boggles my mind. I could never do that in good conscience, and out of principle would never give a compan my money.

Kudos for HTC for still bring development friendly.

Look at what root and Xposed did for my LGG5, allowing me to get 7h Screen On time.
I wish all OEMs still released the Dev edition phones. That way you could get a Dev version of a of any phone and be able to unlock the BL and flash whatever you wanted. I would love to run CM on all my phones! Then with TWRP and a good backup...you could restore back to stock anytime you wanted......

I will not buy a phone that does not have the potential of root or root+unlocked B/L. Optimized Kernels alone can increase not only the battery but performance by large margins. Right now, ElementalX kernel is available for the HTC 10. Once the dev is able to lock down some of the wakelocks (the notorious wifi wakelock for example), the battery life will be greatly increased from stock moreso than his optimized clockspeed modifications do right now.

Yup. I usually like to keep the phone stock with an optimized custom Kernel. CM is nice, but you sometimes lose features of the phone. And most CM features are available in Android these days. I just don't feel the need to customize the roms anymore.

No reason to have dev editions if the OEMs would just not lock the phones. Pretty simple.

I hear there.... I used to flash roms on all my phones. New kernels and a plethora of customizations you can't find on stock android or an android skin. There are Devs that make custom roms that kang features from other roms and OEM skins. It really is amazing what some of those guys can do! I just don't have the time and effort more to keep up it and do that anymore. :) I am looking forward to the larger Nexus phone later this year. Hopefully there will be a CM version of N to flash on it to get features not usually found stock android.

I probably won't unlock, flash, or any of that. It makes judging HTC and my carrier easier if I have to wait for updates. Hope they rise to the challenge.

So far, Sprint is failing.

Surely if you install a custom ROM, kernel or root the phone, Android Pay then doesn't work?

Not always. There are more systemless root options and even xposed coming out that leave system in tact and thus don't break AP or OTA.

Yeah you are a bit stuck with sprint since they lock their radios. Tmo you can flash the unlocked rom and get updates immediately.

The latest update via sprint is "coming soon".

Android Pay only breaks if you modify certain system files. Right now I am running a custom Kernel, root (systemless version), and a custom ROM with Pay working flawlessly.

"Okay Google, open Eero."

I see it have the text 100% correct, then changes Eero to arrow. Any idea how I can stop that?

Oh hey.

Is there any way to know what those things in my status bar are? I can guess most of them, but there are a couple things I can't figure out.

Can you do a screenshot and we might be able to tell you :)

Screenshot is power button + home button together

Edit ... never mind you already did it.

From left, ??, Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi, Cellular,. Battery ... not sure what the compass thing is.

Your WiFi icon is different to mine though. But could be a firmware / carrier thing.

So the weird N looking thing is nfc? Alright. Now all I need to know is the weird circle with a line through it. And neither of know that one it seems. XD

Seems from google search and XDA post that it's telling you location services are enabled/being accessed.

Yeah we knew that one, were talking about the compass style symbol ;)

Ah sorry, didn't read it all :) That NFC symbol and the boom sound stuff drive me nuts. I like a clean status bar but not going to turn off NFC and turn it on every time I want to use AP. Wish they made it an option without root. Haven't seen much other need to root this puppy yet.

I like that feature if it is for location being actively used, not just enabled

NFC should be the same way!!! Come on the top when it is being used, yes!
[doublepost=1464901289][/doublepost]Just sent it as a feature request to one of the HTC guys on Reddit. Who knows, maybe something will happen.

What kernel and ROM you using?

Running Viper rom and using elementalx kernel. With both of those combinations, in getting about 6.5-7hr SOT on average on WiFi. But that's with quite a bit of work emails being pushed

Using an unlocked htc 10 on Verizon (flashed the Verizon radio)

Nice little read about the wakelock and others annoyances like the status bar message here:

Going to give Amplify a try.

THIS is the beauty of Android to me.

Only downside is Xposed breaks Android Pay (the systemless xposed doesn't seem to really be "systemless" per-se). Also, xposed can be a slight battery drainer, but the Amplify module may make up for it.
