Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
I just want an OLED iPhone. Couldn’t care less about TouchID as long as the iris/face scanned works perfectly. TouchID never works for me when my fingers are greasy or wet so good riddance.

The 8 is only expensive because Apple can’t get enough of the OLED panels to meet the entirety of the iPhone demand. They should get it stabilised by next year when both models dump LCD and go OLED. I am thinking Apple would turn the top variant into Pro like the Note series with Pencil support while the 9 Plus will still be the flagship with current prices for non Pro users.

What? Lol, so the iPhone 8 is expensive because of supply constraints. Thats a great excuse, Apple has more then enough time to get enough OLED screens. If they are like other company then they will be working on a minimum 5 year plan. And considering the number of phones available now with OLED screens then I really don't think supply is a problem, certainly not an excuse for silly prices.

It's quite a premium for not just screen tech, but tech in general that others have had, in some cases, for years. Wireless charging, for example, which may not even be available on release, requiring a software update down the line first.

But hey, the iPhone is finally catching up, even if it's going about it in some unfortunate ways.

Increased cost likely has little to do with availability and moreso with Apple desiring to keep the high margins they historically have with their products, especially the iPhone. This is pure economics--Apple is setting the price based upon the expected demand from their customers and what they're willing to pay before adversely affecting that demand. If they could sell all the iPhones they produce at $1000+, that's what they'll charge. If people would stop paying these high prices, we'd eventually see the prices come down.

Based on all reports over the past year or so, this simply isn't the case. There's a worldwide shortage of available, quality OLED displays. IIRC, part of the reason Google has partnered once again with LG on one of the upcoming Pixel models is to secure hard to get displays and LG is one of the two biggest producers (after Samsung, of course). And yes, there are lots of phones with OLED displays already but only those on the Samsung flagships are considered the best quality and asany smart business would do, Samsung is reserving those panels for themselves first. Also, you can't start stockpiling displays years in advance--the technology is moving far too fast for that and that's also just poor cost management--you don't want to have large amounts of unused inventory sitting in warehouses somewhere, especially inventory that will likely be subpar quality or obsolete by the time you actually need to use it. Even though Apple could certainly afford it, that's still the equivalent of just setting your money on fire.

Hmm I kind of doubt Google is putting a serious dent in the OLED screen market. They sold like a million pixels and that's a drop in the bucket next to Apple and Samsung. I don't disagree with you at all, I just don't think Google is the one gobbling up all the screens.

Sorry if my rambling wasn't clear. It wasn't that Google was gobbling up supply but rather without securing some displays from LG, the chances of having access to high quality OLED displays for their own hardware is slim, thanks to Apple, Samsung, and others using so much of it.

I don't buy the increased cost based on supply chain problems either. Apple are creeping their prices up because they know there will be consumers who will pay it, pure and simple. All I'm interested now is the continuity of keeping an iPhone. I'm not bothered about OLED or rear facing fingerprint sensors, eye recognition etc etc. I just want a sensibly priced upgrade consistent with what I've been paying.

That's pretty obvious though. Apple will squeeze as hard as they can.

I don't know if I believe this latest report so close to September, but it seems Apple may be having issues with software bugs relating to both wireless charging and the front facing 3D sensing camera (that is supposedly going to replace Touch ID).

That lines up with John Gruber's recent tweet about the wireless charging feature delayed until a software update coming later after release. I wonder what they're having issues with. This also worries me that this may be an indication that they are not using qi standard maybe...? I hope not, but also wouldn't be surprised.

Apple will have the 7S models. And if the latest rumors hold true, Google's regular Pixel will remain largely unchanged, too.

So still plenty of bezels to go around for these "flagships!" ;)

At present there are only 2 mass market phones (G6 and S8/8+) with tiny bezels and side near edgeless screen. However, the chatters on bezel-less phone is quite intense so I think many people are looking forward to this form factor.

Is there any indication in iOS 11 beta that hints that Apple will have some form of "Always on Display" in the iPhone 8? Especially now that they're going OLED?

There are rumors that the Pixel 2 XL will have some form of Always on Display because they're going OLED.

AoD on my S8 has been a surprisingly nice feature. I know what's happening with my phone a glance. Now that more Apple and Google are adopting OLED, I hope this is something we see more of. And in turn, the competition will make Samsung make AoD even more uesful and action-able.

Honest question.

AMOLED =/= OLED?

My Nexus 6P has an AMOLED display. I can double tap the screen or pick up the phone, and my phone will show me the time and my notifications, without turning on the entire display. In theory, this phone is capable of an always on display. What is different between the screen on my Nexus 6P and the screen on the Galaxy S8 / Pixel 2?

I believe they're the same in general, so yes, the 6P could have an always on display. I believe AMOLED and Super AMOLED are all OLED technology.

I could be wrong so others feel free to jump in here.

I have definitely enjoyed the feature on my S7, and I hope others add the feature as well.

If it even exists, there’s no way they’d have it in any of the betas.

They are, but it will take Apple at least three years to make it a popular choice for iPhone fans, because I can certainly say not many will pay the rumoured 1200 plus starting price!
Give it till next year and the year after for the normal iPhones without bezels at more sensible prices for real impact.

If iOS 11 doesn't change where I have to force touch each notification I'll be switching to he pixel 2, note or s8. The notifications are so annoying now

Dont worry. They will be many sheeples who are willing to plonk down $1200 in a heart beat.
Others will just buy more of the s8 at HALF the price. :)

Doesn't seem the s8 is going all that gang-busters from what is being written in blogs.

15% more sales than s7 duo within the same corresponding period is very good results, I would say. Even more so as s8/s8+ release was staggered compared to s7 worldwide release at the onset.

Maybe if the disappointing rumors of iphone 8 are true then that would fuel more s8 sales.

According to your own derogatory opinion of the customers of the next iPhone, iPhone "x" will sell just fine.

A lot of my friends and colleagues like me have become disinterested in the latest models and just buy older model handsets on cheaper contracts. It's not always one platform or the other with the latest and greatest. People are keeping phones longer as offerings are dull and prices high. Next year when my contract runs out I'd sooner buy an iPhone 7 or 7S over a cheaper flagship on another platform.

I thought I had read that besides the initial sales, overall sales of the s8 have been less than the s7. I'll have to look up the article.

Edit: ok no concrete proof on either side. Analysts say s8 has sold less than s7, but Samsungs president refutes it with the 15% figure. But no proof on either side as Samsung strangely refuses to release official numbers.
