I thought I had read that besides the initial sales, overall sales of the s8 have been less than the s7. I'll have to look up the article.

Edit: ok no concrete proof on either side. Analysts say s8 has sold less than s7, but Samsungs president refutes it with the 15% figure. But no proof on either side as Samsung strangely refuses to release official numbers.

You believe some no name analyst who may pluck figures out of the air have the same credibility as the CEO of Samsung? You are kidding right?

This part in bold made me laugh. Refresh my memory—what happened to the Samsung’s Vice Chairman, son of the Chairman....

Then there’s the matter of a teeny, tiny scandal of some sort late last summer. ;)

Yup, Samsung executive management has a glorious, sterling reputation of keeping everything above board.

I'm not stupid enough to believe either of them without concrete proof. Just last week Samsung spokespeople were saying that S8 had even sales with the S7*, and now a week later they jump to 15%? CEO's say things in order to keep shareholders happy, they are not all necessarily true or at least 100% accurate. My gut tells me the S8 is tanking though, there are so many BOGO sales it's not funny, and on swappa they've dropped in price significantly. Once again just my personal opinion, nothing more.

*A Samsung official refused to compare the S8 and S7 directly, saying that the S8 started selling in three key markets first unlike the S7 that sold globally immediately. “We estimate S8’s sales volume to be similar to that of S7 for now,” the official added.

Samsung has to release their official q2 results soon. I doubt the samsung ceo would be stupid enough to say something that doesn't tally with their audited numbers.

He gave the 15% figure so most probably he has some finalized numbers. The said Samsung spokeperson, maybe he just want to let his boss bring the good news.

There can be many reasons for great offers. Maybe Samsung wanted to push for market share. Or they over produced. Even at the reduced price, Samsung still makes lots of money since they make almost all of the components in s8 themselves.

I don’t think it’s tanking—we see these kinds of BOGOs here in the States every year a few months after release, especially as we approach the big autumn releases (iPhone, Note, Nexus/Pixel), but I’ve also read reports that it’s not meeting expectations. I posted a link to another article last month showing that the S8 models were actually still being outsold by the S7 models–more than a year after the S7 was released.

Total speculation on my part but I’d wager it’s due to some degree to a couple of factors:

1). The Note 7 fiasco last fall. It’s still fresh in many people’s mind (I still hear comments from people confusing Galaxy S models with the Note 7–‘isn’t that the phone that caught fire?’. It might not have caused a widespread migration away from Samsung but it’s hard to imagine it didn’t have some noticeable impact.

2). Flagship price fatigue. There are just too many decent to very good smartphones out that cost a lot less. Walk into any carrier store in the US and there are plenty of models that cost far less. Most people don’t actively follow this industry and just simply don’t care about having the latest and greatest. My brother-in-law got an LG Stylus 2 for $99 a while back and thinks it’s awesome–does far more than anything he needs it to do. His wife is still rocking a Galaxy S5 that she got well over a year after it was released and has no intention of replacing it anytime soon.

Maybe tanking isn't the right term, but I do think that all these BOGO deals and all the bundled packages with GearVR, memory cards, wireless charging stands, etc serve to really cut Samsungs profit margin. I don't know, I guess Samsung works on volume and even a slim profit margin at a high enough quantity still means a lot of profit. Plus they produce a lot of the phone in house so I'm sure they have a really good profit margin.

On your #2, that's part of the reason analysts think the S8 isn't doing so well. I'm really surprised that companies like xiaomi haven't stepped in to the western markets, they would make a killing. But I guess that's why companies like Huawei are doing so well right now.

Maybe, I certainly can't argue with the official q2 results so we will see. I'm not disagreeing with you at all though, I have no inside knowledge. It will be interesting either way how it pans out.

Growing reports of delays for the iPhone 8, but I actually wouldn't be surprised if Apple keeps the iPhone 8 release for 2018. I've always thought it was weird for Apple to introduce the iPhone 7S series and an iPhone 8 in the same year, even if they call it "Edition" or "Pro" or something else. It's about as un-Apple like a thing to do as removing Touch ID. They wouldn't "downgrade" their 7S models that way. I've asked before, if the iPhone 8 does come out at the same time, what does that mean for the 7S series? It gives a whole new definition of "flagship."

But hey, who knows.

Latest analyst predicts delayed super cycle for iPhone 8, strong 2018 for AAPL
https://9to5mac.com/2017/07/17/iphone-8-super-cycle-delayed/

Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty is the latest analyst to weigh in on Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone release(s). Citing the same delays as many others, Huberty believes an iPhone super cycle may still occur, but will just be pushed into 2018.

Thought this was also interesting especially coming from a former Apple exec. Not unsimilar from what some of us have been saying here for quite some time:

Former Apple exec says iPhone falling behind Samsung
https://www.cultofmac.com/493090/former-apple-exec-says-iphone-falling-behind-samsung/

Having said all that, I'm not a tiny bit worried about Apple. Apple literally can afford to release the iPhone 8 whenever they want. I said before, Apple catching up is the big deal. And unlike some of the Apple fans here, I believe people are ready for more features, better screens, etc. I know I am. Competition is going to make Apple's next few years really exciting.

Simple logic. The scum that has more to lose by giving inaccurate info is better than the scum that has nothing to lose giving guesstimate and inaccurate analysis.

If the leaked images/renders are true, the iPhone 8 will have even slimmer bezels than the S8. Should be fun to watch these two battle it out.

I'm excited about the iPhone 8 design (and features), too. It's long overdue.

I also can't wait to see how Rene Ritchie and others like him -- who for years talked about the importance of symmetry in design -- will reconcile the asymmetrical design of the iPhone 8 front panel.

It will be almost as bad as his recent article on apple potentially not having Touch ID..

"Touch ID isn't a feature. It's a solution to a problem that can potentially be solved in a variety of other ways. Including Face ID"

If this ever ends up being the result, I could get behind it.

How would you unlock if you were holding your phone with your left hand though? You'd scan a left-hand index finger maybe?

https://www.cultofmac.com/493534/new-rumor-claims-iphone-8s-touch-id-will-shift-power-button/

iPhone 8’s Touch ID could have a surprising new home

Sell a left-handed version of the iPhone!

Anyway I will almost certain switch back to iOS in the next 18 months, simply because of the Apple Watch.

I've been a huge advocate of wearable tech and bought multiple devices over the years. Apple Watch is finally at a place where I'd be happy to invest in it long-term.

Saw a Series 2 on my uncle last week, it actually looked good. Not amazing looking (like my Gear S3) but it's getting less ugly!

So will see when new AW comes out. Regarding iPhone, I genuinely don't use my phone for anything so specialist - app agnostic so can switch easily. Would miss Android but I think Apple is putting together a great overall package (albeit for a premium price).

That FPS location probably won't happen, but I'd be cool with it. As edge-to-edge displays become more popular, software home keys are the way to go, like on Android.

I'm excited about Apple over the next few years, too. Competition has awoken a beast. Hopefully in a couple of years, these new features will become more standardized across Apple's lineup, making that premium price more accessible.

That's the obvious solution, so obvious it makes you want to slap an apple engineer upside the head. I don't see any issues with registering multiple fingers depending on which hand you use, I already do that on my 7+.

Playing around with an unlocked S8 + at B & H. Man the design is beautiful, the software is also so much better than before.

I like that I can get rid of the app drawer and make it like IOS. I hate app drawers...

I didn't know what an app drawer even was until I got my S8. But once I knew what it was, it was the first thing I got rid of. :)

I actually changed a lot of things to make the S8 look more like iOS (it's just more familiar to me that way). The fact that I can make it look like iOS is pretty cool.

Appdrawer is one of the best things about Android. Who wants pages and pages of icons..
It's a preference thing. I don't use the app drawer on my G6 or S8 when using stock launcher and remember Chinese phones and in Asia generally the preference is for launchers without app drawers. You likewise don't need pages and pages. I have simply 2 homescreens both on the G6, S8 and iPhone 7+ with apps divided into folders.

There is no right or wrong, but the insistence that the app drawer is somehow the defining feature of android (I am not saying you said that, but it is often touted or presented as such here on this fora and other android forums) is ignorant of the millions of android devices sold each year (most of which account for the rise and dominance of android) in parts of the world which favour no app drawer at all.
