I regret buying the X. I had an iPhone 7 Plus before and on iOS 10, battery life was incredible. Easily 10+ hours of usage. With iOS 11, I'm lucky to get 8.5 hours. So, naturally, the reason to upgrade to the X was better battery life. With the X I barely get 9 hours. It's not bad, but after being spoiled by the 7 Plus on iOS 10, it's pretty bad. I expected more from this phone. Seriously considering selling this and getting an 8 Plus.

You must use your iPhone a lot more than I do. I usually have 25% or more battery after 16 hours. That usually includes an hour or so of streaming audio over cellular, and snapping half a dozen pics. Of course I would expect my battery to drop a bit if I played more audio or video on a typical day, or if I played more games. I usually play games on the iPad. In fact I use an iPad at work and at home quite a bit, so that probably saves a lot of my iPhone battery now that I think about it.

I pay $1000/month+ for my car.... that I use about 2-3 hours a day.... and I get a new one every 2-3 years.

I've paid $800-$1200 a year for the newest iPhone since 2007... that I use virtually ALL day.

To me, the iPhone is a BARGIN.

The only thing I (still) hate about the iPhone X is that they didn't release the iPhone X Plus at the same time.... coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, it doesn't seem like as much of an upgrade as it should (I prefer the bigger form).

I hate that it cost $1000. Reality is that it's not worth that much. For me, it doesn't do $300 more than the iPhone 8 does.

Can't compare an iPhone to a car. One drives you and takes you to work or leisure, the other does nothing but take calls and play media/apps.

I don't regret buying mine. It's the going rate for high end phones these days. The Note 8 is $950 so not that far off price wise.

I do think all phones are overpriced though but it is what it is and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Personally I think the iPhone X should be about $900 but I don't regret buying it at $1000.

They are both cool tech tools that I buy to make my life easier and because I like them.

Nobody needs a fancy car when any old junker or taking the bus would get you A>B just as easily.

Nobody needs an iPhone X when you could get a cheap pre-paid flip phone to make phone calls just as easily.

I'm just making the point that the amount of time every day I spend using my iPhone easily justifies the price compared to what I spend on my car that I use/need a lot less.

Same argument can be made for people that spend $5 on a Starbucks every day... they know it's unnecessary... but they like it so it's worth it.

Yes and no. You can't compare functionalities. You can try to compare end result and means to achieve those. However, would you prefer to take the bus and add on extra time to your comute to work? Many of us wouldn't and between an X or a car, I'd pay more for the car.

Agree!

I have a friend who gets Starbucks everyday on her way to work. $7 x 5 days a week = $35.. Times that by 52 weeks in a year = $1,800 a year. She asked me yesterday how I like the X and after a brief conversation she said she would not buy one as it was to expensive.. What the what? And $1800 a year for Starbucks is not? LOL

I think it's still a useful comparison though, because this is a thread about whether or not the iPhone X provides enough value to justify the price, or do people regret it? The same question can be asked of whether or not someone regrets buying an expensive car, or if they'd be just as happy with a less expensive model. Most people would say they need a car and a smartphone. They provide different services. Most people would probably say they could do without the smartphone (or even a basic mobile phone) more easily than they could do without a car, but that's not going to be true for everyone. I spent 10 years in a city where I didn't need a car, and even now I barely drive the one my wife and I share. Fortunately I live close enough to work to bike or even walk. The only time I ever drive a car is on evenings or weekends to do grocery shopping or take a trip for leisure. I can get through the day without my iPhone as well, but my day will definitely go more easily and be more enjoyable with my iPhone. I use it to stream podcasts, news, or music on my walk to and from work. I use it for personal communication (voice, text, etc.) and work communication (Slack, Skype for Business, Outlook, ticket tracking system). I usually take a number of photos per day. I also wear an Apple Watch and use it along with my iPhone for fitness tracking, task and project management, calendar, reminders, etc. The iPhone helps me be more productive, efficient, and healthy. Yes a less expensive model could do all those things too, but that's not really the point. It's the value we get out of the $1,000 bucks is the point. I use my iPhone for many things, so I probably get more use and more value out of it than someone who uses it only for voice calls, texts, and occasional web browsing or driving directions. My wife has no interest in spending $1,000 on an iPhone X, or $350 on an Apple Watch, because she just wouldn't use them as much as I do. The value just isn't there for her.

Likewise there is little value to me in owning a nice car. For me the car is just a way to haul more groceries home than I can fit on my bicycle. A nice luxury car would be wasted on me, but a nice iPhone definitely is not wasted on me. I also like nice bicycles. Fortunately it costs a lot less to own a luxury iPhone and a luxury bicycle than it costs to own a luxury car. :D

Your post is interesting. Because Tim Cook had commented about how the iPhone X is similar to what somebody would pay for a few nice coffees a week.

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/03/iphone-x-coffee-price-comparison/amp/

"I think it's important to remember that a large number of people pay for the phone by month," said Cook. "I think you would find you could buy an iPhone X for $33/month. So, if you think about that, that's a few coffees a week -- it's less than a coffee a day at one of these nice coffee places."

I think that showed how out of touch he is with pricing and his clientele. I’m still waiting to see an iPhone X available as cheap as that and I don’t even buy coffee on a weekly basis.

I think Cook was just asserting that phones are mainly financed today because of how carriers are structured versus factoring the price as whole. But nor do I frequent Starbucks on a weekly basis either.

Agreed. I for one, don't buy my phones financed. I save up and then buy. Hence, when I look at the phone, I get to do objective decisions. Do I get what I think is just for the cash I'll hand over?

Oh go on then, I'll bite. Break down the extras that you get from the X over the 8 by monetary value.

Your comment was not directed at me but I'll touch on why I made the jump from the 8 to the X and why to me it was worth the $300
  1. Design - I really dig the design over the 8
  2. The larger screen on the X. Basically the same sized form factor of the 8 with much more screen = awesome!
  3. The phone looks so much better (if that matters to you)
  4. faceID and gestures - It's where the iPhones are going. I view this as my chance to get adjusted to them as I believe the 8 will be the last iPhone with a home button and touchID. Rumors for the 2018 iPhones are 3 versions and none have the home button or touchID.
  5. OLED screen. What can I say, I prefer them over LCD's.
To me these were worth the additional cost. It may not be to you or others but for me they are..

True with his point but it’s clear he hasn’t the first clue how much financed iPhone X’s actually cost. For a financed iPhone you are looking at £54 ($74) on Apples upgrade program before you even add a SIM card deal. The cheapest contract requires a large sum upfront for the handset. There’s no cheap way of owning an X even if you try an justify it by saying ‘it’s only 45 coffees a month’.

Maybe he should honour his own perception of pricing and we’d have an iPhone that’s actually cheaper than the iPhone 8? I’m aware that won’t happen lol. I wish we had the same US carrier deals where I live that’s for sure!!!

You’ve provided a good list of the key differences and I think this is why opinion is so divided among iPhone users. The only thing on your list that I am interested in is a slightly larger screen within the same footprint. Everything else is uninspiring to me. Not sure I’d pay £300 more for a few more millimetres of screen which is probably why I’m an iPhone X sceptic.

Owning both, I have to tell you that you're wrong.

Matter of opinion

I know you said the phone looks so much better. But I also find the quality of the phone is fantastic. I have the silver and I do not have a single scratch on it yet with no case and the build quality feels sturdy and durable

I agree. The quality of the phone is pretty good. Coming from a jet black 7 Plus that felt more premium than the 8 Plus, the X is miles ahead. The build quality is really good.

$300. Oh baby. What will I do with all that money. Hmm. That's a month's worth of bagels right there.

People can live without an iPhone X but can’t live without their caffeine fix.

It's pathetic obvious rationalization / budgeting justification for a bleeding edge top of the line iPhone tho. From a CEO

"Woof down this massive plate of BBQ and just work out a ton that day and you'll be good"
